Backpacking the Enchantments - Snow Lakes - Episode 1

Welcome to the first installment of our Enchantments backpacking the CORE mini series! In this first episode we set off from the Snow Lakes Trailhead and make way for Upper Snow Lakes.
Background: It's September 2016, Jen and I won a Core Zone permit from the Enchantments Lottery. We booked five nights/six days with a full crew of eight hikers and set out from the Snow Lakes Trail Head.
These videos are an intro as to what to expect if you too are backpacking the Enchantments. If you are planning on hiking/backpacking the Enchantments, please do more research than what you see here. This is an amazing and life threatening area, proceed at your own risk.

I was just thinking yesterday, on the mountain, as a pika meep'd at me, how I would love to have that as the sound notification of an email on my phone. Then, when I am sitting in my livingroom and I get an email, I also get a random pika I can meep back at. :D

Thank you for the closeup look at the trail. I love your video. This is exactly what I wanted to see before I commit to the hike.

Awesome! I love the Enchantments! I've been up there twice now. 2 years ago on a friend's lottery (Snow Zone, late August) and last year on a lottery I won (Core Zone, late June). What a difference 2 months make. Going up Aasgard Pass with a 40 lb pack was the toughest, slowest hike I've ever done! Last year up there was an adventure. Sucked that me, or any of my friends, were able to get a pass this year. Excited to see the rest of your adventure into The Enchantments!

I won a pass for snow lake in September. Woohoo. I'm so excited. A couple people in my group were curious what the temps were like at night if you remember and can give insight I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

So awesome and beautiful. You two are great! Would you make a video or do you have one that I haven’t seen about your backpacking gear? I lead hikes with kiddos and your videos are educational and user friendly.

Awesome. Real Backpacking! I have never won the Core yet so very happy for you. Interesting you went Snow direction. Also glad no driving video...I fast forward through that anyway.

Thanks Bruce. We basically chose this route for a couple reasons. There aren't that many sites at Colechuck that could hold four tents. And I didn't want to send a few inexperienced backpackers up Aasgards pass. Plus the hike through the lower core to where I wanted to camp is extremely beautiful. :)

These long circuits are my favourites. I'm curious about the Nada lake, cause the portuguese term "Nada" means "Nothing". Well, but it seems to be a lot to see there. Anyway, I'm excited about this series, cause I have a lot to learn about backpacking and, of course, cause you're my favourites on KZread!

Excellent question! I believe Nada in this case means "Hope" taken from the Scandinavian meaning. This region was originally named with Nordic words, but at one point most of it was renamed with your more generic words. Nada might have been one of the words that they didn't change. I haven't done any research on Nada since it's always a lake we pass on our way to a final destination.

Now it makes sense. "Hope" is a better word to name this beautiful place. There's always more to learn from you guys. Thanks!

Hey, Nick & Jen! Ran across your channel this morning, and now hoping the power doesn't go out so I can enjoy more of the Enchanted Lakes series. Our first "high wind" warning of the fall season.. Yeehaw.... Really impressed with your channel! Some nice dialog, and I appreciate that you don't try to do it with suffocating musical background, as so many do. Lived in Skagit Co for 65 yrs (-military time), but I have never been in the Ench Lks area... looks great! Of course we have some decent stuff here in the North Cascades as well. Just wanted to say "Hi" and as I don't get out as much as I'd like, I love seeing the back-country in vids like yours! Thanks. Interesting I have a daughter named "Jennifer" also. Keep cool... or warm, as the case may be, and I'm sure I'll be commenting on more of your vids. SkagitEd

Thanks Ed! Glad you like the vids, I've got a bunch of videos from this season waiting for some free time to get on with editing them. In the meantime, feel free to peruse our back catalog. Also, we love the North Cascades. One of my dreams is to own some property up there. :)

A man sat down next to me at a restaurant in Sedro Woolley one day about 25 years ago, and asked if I was familiar with the area. Yep... He pulled out a magazine and showed me a picture of a nice farm scene and asked me if I might know the area where it might be. "I think I grew up about a mile from there!" He had been in oil exploration all around the world, and said he had only seen one other place he'd rather to retire.... "But I'd have to marry a Norwegian to move there!" he said. Yep, pretty nice. Got to admit wintering in Arizona is starting to have an appeal, tho!!

I’m a Florida native. Born on the beach and grew up in the swamp. I’ve lived around the world a bit and think the PNW is the best America has to offer. But man does the grey rain get to me halfway into our winters. I’m hoping for a winter home in Patagonia to retire at. :)

Tell me a little bit more about this lottery. I've been wanting to go up there for a long time . But I wasn't sure how to go about it but I knew you needed a permit to camp overnight. Is this one of those lottery is that you can only get one day out of the year first come first serve and hope they pick your number. Please give me some more information on this thank you very much. As always I enjoy watching your videos. I love seeing great videos that give you good information to see if I want to go there or not.thanks again for making them

Hi Erick, The permit process is a bit complicated. But to try to summarize, there is a small window where you enter the lottery. And then after that, winners are chosen at random. Here's a link to the official and more detailed explanation: bit.ly/2uGI7gW

I've tried for several years now to get a permit on their so called lottery system and still no luck, its all a joke. What's the secret?

  • @OutsideAndStuff

    @OutsideAndStuff

I don't know what the secret is, but my theory is pick weekdays and after major vacations. Basically, most people want to maximize weekends and holidays. So try doing the opposite? But it doesn't always work. Jen won this pass while the other seven of us all came up empty.
