Backpacking Mohican State Forest in January - Winter Backpacking

We travel again to Mohican State Forest to backpack a small loop on a warm day in January. It turned out to be a wet and muddy trip, but none the less, was another great adventure!
Starting at the south bridal parking, we hike a clockwise loop making camp at the park and pack site #3. Some interesting water crossings made for an exciting (and chilling) time. Enjoy!

Ha, I was glad this posted up before I headed to bed. Really liked your editing on this one Bryce. Obvious you spent some time putting it together. Looks like a Creek/stream crossing bonanza. Mohican is pretty cool but I've only done a tiny bit of it. Nice to have the forest so close.

Thanks again Tim. I'm actually getting very proficient at editing, so this one only took about 5 days. 3-5 hours a day. lol. I enjoy the editing process. The filming part is what I struggle with the most. Yes it is nice being so close. Mohican is becoming my home field so to speak. I know it pretty well by now.

Good video man. Did some day hiking that same weekend in Cuyahoga Vally National Park with my wife and kids. Got to love the crazy Ohio weather. Kinda hope it's that warm in a few weeks when I go to Zaleski for the weekend. Keep the videos coming.

I've never been hiking in the Cuyahoga Valley, but its on the to-do list. Judging from all the snow we got today, winter may have finally arrived. But it is Ohio, so it may be warm again by your next trip.haha. Thanks for watching and subscribing!

I love getting out like this in the winter during warm or cooler weekends in Ohio or PA. I went to Oil Creek St Park between Christmas and New Years with a buddy from work, we had a ton of fun in an Adirondack using the firewood they had there split. I recommend going to an Adirondack for a nights stay if rain is forecast, it makes it a miserable experience to a fun one. You know people going camping in the winter months know what they are doing for the most part so if there are others at the Adirondack camp sights it is fun to talk to them although I love showing up and not seeing anyone else.

Winter camping is a new found love of mine. Mostly due to the miserable heat we had all last summer. haha. I too enjoy the solitude of an empty campsite, but it is also nice to meet similar minded people so i agree totally. I have been wanting to stay in an Adirondack. Never done it. Its on the to-do list! Thanks for watching!

I am starting to plan a trip for this coming weekend (feb 24-26), considering Mohican, Archer's Fork, Wildcat Hollow, or Lake Vesuvius. I live about 20 minutes from Akron in Wayne county. Let me know if you or any other Ohioans are interested in joining.

Those horse trails look just like my local backpacking trail, the Perimeter trail around Eastfork State Park east of Cincinatti. I hate what they do to the trail but I guess horses have a right to hike too. lol. Thanks for sharing even if it wasn't your most delightful trip. I think my favorite part of backpacking is when you find yourself comfortably surviving situations most people never experience. I remember some very wet trips with as much fondness as my most sunny. How many people will ever hear that animal sound? People have no idea what they're missing right outside they're back door and much of it takes getting out there even if you might get a little (or a lot) wet.

You couldn't be more right. Every trip is memorable in some way, whether its great or not so great. haha. I knew we would be wading through some water going into this one but it makes for a memorable adventure like you said. When i first started recording my trips it was because i realized they were all different in some way, and things just happen out there. Most people would think its boring, just having a fire and sleeping in a tent. They have no idea what they are missing. We've had so many cool experiences out there.

That would been REAL cool! They have trails but not really backpacking trails (only a few mile worth) We are doing a Laurel Highlands through hike in May and wanted to check out the Lean-To Shelters... same set up as the LH shelters! They were pretty cozy! But I think I'll still take my tent though... like the privacy!

I like the privacy of my tent as well. I never had the urge to stay in a shelter. I guess on the plus side, you dont have to carry tent weight. That would be nice for a long trail like LH

Hey Bryce, I might be heading up to Mohican for an overnighter tomorrow and was wondering if the South bridal parking where you started is the one just south of Rt. 97 and the park Rd 51 intersection? And do you know how many miles the bridal loop is that has the park and pack sites 1-6?

  • @BryceNewbold

I believe so. It is on 97, just east of the memorial shrine. As far as millage goes, I've never been on the trail that has sites 5 & 6 on it, so i can't help you out there. Have fun!

Hey Bryce, just finally watched this as I was out of the country on a family cruise. Great video...I am glad I missed that thunderstorm when I was there ha ha. Crossing that river 3 times to get that shot prob made your feet go numb lol. I liked that hug rock table. I hope to get back over there and finish the mountain bike loop and hit some of the bridle trails soon. And I haven't seen Yahtzee since I was a kid...I need to teach my kids that game! Good way to pass some time during a rain storm. How did you make some of your video shots pan while you guys were walking by? Do you have some kind of auto zoom control while recording video or something?

  • @BryceNewbold

    @BryceNewbold

    7 жыл бұрын

Yea the water was pretty cold but its always worth it for the shot. Yahtzee is a great lightweight backpacking game. Good fun! The shots that zoom and pan are actually all still shots. I just figured out how to do it with my editing program. I use Adobe Premiere Elements to edit with. Some programs may not have that feature.

  • @jasonwish-

Ah, I was wondering if thats how you did it. I use cyberlink power director 14, and I guess i've never tried to do it with a video clip, only still shots.

  • @BryceNewbold

Adobe is pretty cool, it allows me to pick exactly how far i want to zoom or pan, so i can make it really slow or really fast. I think it looks better slower than faster.

  • @BryceNewbold

I have not seen any eagles out there yet. Ashley insisted i leave the screeching in the video so someone would tell us what they thought. I'm leaning towards a hawk because now that you mention that, it does sound like one. I don't have much Eagle experience, but I'll have to listen more carefully next time I kayak by the eagle nest at Lake Piedmont. They always seem to yell at me when i go by. haha . Thanks!

All the sites seem to be occupied on the weekends in the spring. It’s getting very popular. I wonder what it would take to get the powers that be to add 5 sites throughout the whole area. I believe state laws prohibit stealth camping unlike national forest lands like wildcat hollow. You youtubers have more pull than I do. Something to think about. I think you could easily add 5 sites spaced out and not disrupt anything.

  • @BryceNewbold

That is a great idea. Mohican could easily accommodate more sites. Definitely something to look into. I may bring this topic up at a meetup i'm doing there with some other youtubers soon. Thanks for the thought!
