Backpacking Kalalau Trail---Napali Coast, Kauai, Hawaii

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This is a video of a 2 night 3 day backpacking trip along the 22 mile Kalalau Trail. This trail is on the rugged Napali Coast on the North end of the Hawaiia of Kaui. It is regarded as one of the most scenic backpacking trails in the world and I agree.

It's important to note the abundance of water is contingent on the time of year. I did this hike in May and there was almost nothing between Hanakapi'ai and Hanakoa. The few streams I passed were almost dried up. Water sources between Hanakoa and Kalalau were not a problem.

You show more detail and areas that I've never seen on any of the others - smaller waterfalls, crossings, views up into the valleys, views of the trail in front of you, animals etc... Thank you for sharing your adventure with us! - hehe - and just realized this is 7 years old - hahaha - well done!!!

When I tried to do this trail back in '05, there was a major storm front in the islands, and it absolutely poured that day, so I didn't get to do it. : ((( But, my experience at Grand Canyon, Canyonlands, etc., revealed to me that carrying extra T-shirts in ziploc bags dripping wet are great to have along. When your starting shirt becomes wet with sweat, pull out a wet shirt from the bags and put it on. It's like A/C.

We appreciate your common sense pointers, vivid photography and safety tips, but have one suggestion. I would highly recommend treating the water. Leptospira bacteria can be found in these streams and pools. Small chance, but not worth taking in our view. Thanks for sharing your video, happy hiking.

Fuel - I used an alcohol stove on this trip. I got the fuel at Walmart on the island. You will need to check the state website to see if anything has changed as far as regulations. If you used a gas canister for stoves like a pocket rocket or jetboil those can be hard to find. Do some digging on forums and see where people are getting those because I believe you can't fly with them. For permits read this site...www.kalalautrail.com/information/permits/. It has a lot of good information on the trail. You do need permits issues by the state park system. On this trip I used Aqua mira drops. So yes use something to treat your water. I hope that helps.

Alright, need some honesty here... As a Midwestern gal who only hikes the midwest, what training would you recommend? It is a goal to make it to Kalalau before or on my 40th birthday. I've hiked Kauai before (Nou Nou, Awaawapuhi, Secret Falls, Secret Beach, etc.), so I completely get the slippery aspect.

Good question. Your pre-hike conditioning depends on a lot of factors but here are few things to think about. The trail is 11 miles one way with several thousand feet of gain and loss. The nice thing it's at sea level so no challenge with altitude. The gain/loss in elevation is probably going to be the biggest difference you might experience from a hike in the Midwest depending on where you are hiking. Your current general fitness level is going to be a big determinate on your training plan. If you are regularly hiking and in ok shape you probably do not need to do a ton extra but if you wanted to make sure you are in good shape. Here are my thoughts. 2-3 months out start/increase your aerobic activity per week. Running, hiking and cycling are my go to for base aerobic activities. Do at least one longer (2-4 hour activity) per week. As you get stronger make that a hike with a pack and then increase weight. REI has some basic articles on conditioning for backpacking. If you want to go overboard and like to geek out like me read " Training for the New Alpinism". I hope that helps. Let me know if you have any questions.

@@BurleyOutdoors Currently not in the best cardio shape, like at all 😂, with the lack of doing anything right right now. I'd probably need to start cardio training at least 6-8 months in advance with our packs on. Have you done the Knobstone Trail around Louisville? Thought about doing parts of that a couple of times for length and backbacking practice. Thank you for the advice. This video of the trail is incredible and probably the best on the internet.

Hello mate. Thanks for the video and the effort. I am planning to go to Kalalau trail this December with a buddy of mine. It looks very doable until I saw Mile 7. My questions are: how narrow and slanted does this trail look, how far does the challenging section stretch (for how long approximately; I hear people say it feels like 10 minutes and it is 0.5 mile long), and finally, what do you recommend we do if before we get into Mile 7, rain starts to pour? Thanks a lot in advance! PS: Funny you mention goats, chicken and cats are common in the wild lol.

  • @BurleyOutdoors

There is plenty of space to walk. Its at least a foot wide if not more. If its pouring rain I would wait it out and play it safe but thats just me. I would agree with the 0.5 mile long and takes about 10-15 min.

+Burley Outdoors It's quite a great experience, although that trail is hairy at some points (especially crawler's ledge). When my wife and I went last November, I knew we had arrived at the beach when I passed several naked men and women walking through the jungle. I even woke up to several guys doing naked yoga on the beach in front of my hammock... brought a new meaning to the downward dog pose. :-| Haha! Kyle, thanks for posting such a beautifully-shot video. Yours is some of the best work on KZread! Take care, Mike

You were a brave man on those narrow spots with the big drop-offs. You should lay off of junk food snacks. The hike won't compensate for it. They will affect you health later in life.

I think over time the chickens and cats escaped from captivity when Europeans brought them over. There are no natural predators so they are abundant.

Man, mile 7 is scary shite. And loose crumbly clay rock, least that's what it looks like. Looks like bad erosion too. Wonder if they'll shore up the hill sides cause that could get nasty for someone.
