Backpacking Gear Review: Electronics & Camera Gear

This is the fourth installment of my backpacking gear review series and in this video I am covering all of my backpacking electronics and backpacking camera gear. The video starts out with a backpacking gear review of all the electronics I think anyone might take on a regular backpacking trip and later in the video I get into a review of all of the backpacking camera gear I take with me to capture the videos you see on this channel. I also get into some of the steps I take to protect my electronics in the backcountry and the accessories I use with them. Let me know if you have any questions about any part of this backpacking gear review and I will respond in the comments!
Below is all of the backpacking electronics and camera gear I reviewed in this video:

I bring electronics to capture the journey so I can look back on it when I’m old and grey. If anything I want to show my future kids I was cool once.

I just got the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 and it’s an amazing camera and the wireless mic that comes with the creator combo is great.

I wanna pick up that mic! Glad to hear you like it. I tried to hold out to upgrade until the 3 came out but couldn’t wait any longer without missing out taking videos this summer. Maybe next year!

After watching your PCT and CDT videos, it looked weird for a second seeing you inside I almost didn't recognize you lol Congrats on the engagement, and I hope your knee is feeling better.

Haha I could definitely see that! Have new glasses and a little bit of makeup on too so I’m sure I look a little different. Thank so much! It’s doing well right now :)

You should get the do-it-all handle for the Pocket 2 which has a 3.5mm jack for a microphone. Alternatively you can get the wireless microphone that comes with it. I clip mine to the sternum strap, works decently enough. Not sure I would want to keep another device charged on a thru hike though.

Thank you for this rec! I've thought about getting the do-it-all handle for sure. And good point about the wireless mic also needing charge. Lots to consider, hopefully will come to a decision before spring.

Thanks SOS. Great Vid. What was the battery life like on the DJI Pocket?

thank you!! batterly life for the DJI is up to 140 minutes. I find that to be plenty for a week long stretch! I don't typically take more than :30 second clips at a time, but there have been a few occasions when I've recharged it while out.

I used the Pocket 2 on my AT thru hike and it did a great job the whole way. I used a Kingston external 1T drive for my videos. I used a card reader plugged into my phone, downloaded the videos, edited and compiled for YT, uploaded, and lastly transferred all videos and pics to the Kingston drive. I had back up SD cards but using this method, I never had to use them. Also, to keep my phone memory usage low, I downloaded all of my music from my computer to the Kingston drive before I left. Periodically I would transfer music to and from my phone...you know how you can get burned out on the same songs over and over. Did you get the optional creative kit with the Pocket 2? It comes with a wireless mic that does a pretty decent job.

I commend you for having a good storage plan and being diligent about it! And thank you for sharing it here. Going to try to be better about that habit in the future haha. I didn't get the creator kit but I am definitely considering the DJI mic that comes in that.

Curious- did you compare the Insta360 with your DJI Pocket video camera? Interested in any thoughts between the two for backpacking.

I haven’t tried the insta 360 before, I imagine it would shoot a little bit more like a GoPro than the DJI. I’m sure it would be handy but I like that the DJI has the gimbal. However, it might be nice to use the 360 hands free strapped to your chest or something where as that’s a little hard to do with the DJI.

What lens are you considering as an alternative for your Sony?

Looking at an 18-50mm f/2.8! Seems like a more reasonable range for the kind of stuff I like to photograph/film. Hoping for a Black Friday sale🤞🏻

@@eliseottthe sigma 18-50 is a pretty legit lens… no stabilization though… didn’t stop me from using it on the OCT last year =)

I feel llike I've heard that! I also have an adapter that can connect sd cards to my phone. It was kind of a hassle though.
