Backpacking Eagle Rock Loop Part 1 - 2020

Backpacking Eagle Rock Loop, Arkansas
On October 1st, 2020, we drove 8 hours to Arkansas to complete a 2.5 day backpacking trip on the Eagle Rock Loop Trail. This loop consists of 3 trails, the Athens Big Fork Trail, Viles Branch Trail, and the Little Missouri Trail. All information related to this loop indicates it is a 26.7 mile loop; however, we have now completed this loop twice and used 2 different GPS trackers, and they have both clocked it at almost exactly 30 miles.
This video includes our adventure for Day 1. On Day 1 we started at the Little Missouri/Athens Big Fork trail and traveled CC completing all 6 peaks on day one. We finished the Athens Big Ford trail and camped about 1.5 or 2 miles into the Viles Branch Trail on night 1 giving us a total of 10.3 miles for day 1 with over 2500’ of elevation gain and approximately 2900’ of elevation loss (according to our gps watches).
This first leg of the loop is challenging with the ascents and descents, but, achievable for almost anyone. Trash was minimal for most of this section; however, there were a few campsites with excessive trash left behind from previous campers. The trail is easy to follow for this section with only one blowdown that I can recall.
Temperatures were amazing and the fall colors were just beginning to pop. The next couple of weeks should be really beautiful!!
Stay tuned for day 2 and day 3!!
Thanks for watching!!

Just curious, I’m gonna solo hike this trail possibly soon weather permitting. Did y’all start at the Little Missouri trail head (upper north west) and went counterclockwise? I’m thinking about starting the same spot to get all mountains out of the way. How is the drive to trailhead? Thanks for any advice and info. Mike

Another fantastic video by you two! Great description and coverage of the trails and beautiful, soulful music. Friends and I just backpacked Horse Thief Springs trail last weekend. Your videos helped tons in planning. Eagle Rock Loop is on our list for next year.

I was a little offended when you said bluecollar. I was thinking blue collar workers. Then I realized you meant Tony. And it seemed totally understandable! 😁 Looked like a good start to the trip.

Just to add to the gripes about trash, when I went to Iowa this weekend there were 2 bags of dog shit in my campsite. They took the time to bag it then flung it on the ground. I must sadly admit that it was past my limit to carry it out. My gag reflex would not allow.

Wow that's crazy!! I honestly can't blame you for not carrying that out!! I refuse to carry out toilet paper as well! I know as a good steward of the trail, I should be able to do it...but I just cannot. Now, if I were out there just to pick up trash for the day, it might be different (would definitely need plastic gloves). Thanks for watching!!

It’s appalling the amount of trash left out on Eagle Rock Loop, one of the best loops not only in the Ouachitas, but anywhere. Thanks for packing out what y’all could - I plan on doing the same here in a few weeks. Counterclockwise (Brush Heap😬) knocking out all the climbs with full packs on day 1 was aggressive, I like it!

I know...the trash is ridiculous!! If we all do a little at a time, it will make a difference!! LOL...yeah I think we are just gluttons for punishment. We passed multiple people that told us we were doing the trail the hard direction....I'm not sure there is an easy direction!! lol. Thanks for watching!!

Love watching your videos. I did Eagle Rock Loop for the first time in November. I loved it. I will do it again and stretch it out next time... Here is a suggestion on your shoes coming untied... I double knot the laces, but the big thing is I wear dirty girl gators and never have an issue with laces, rocks in my shoes ect. Love 'em. But you right. Hike your own hike. See you down the trial. I live in Arkansas. Got any recommendations on an overnight loop in East Texas area easy for me to get to? I started at Little Missouri Falls and hiked CC to Eagle Rock Vista to camp. You are right the sunset and sunrise was beautiful there.

Wow I bet camping at Eagle Rock Vista was amazing!!! I have dirty girl gators and only tried them once, I might have to give them another try. Hmmmm East Texas, that's a tricky one....Unfortunately for being such a big state, backpacking space is somewhat limited. The 4C used to be a great out and back hike, but a large portion of it has been closed for a couple of years. I can't actually think of a loop hike in East Texas unless you make a loop hike out of the trails near the Lonestar Hiking Trail and that would be south east Texas. I hope this helps a little. Checkout LBJ Grasslands. You might find something there. Thanks for watching!!

North TX Hiker technically yes, but we have never seen one or the scat. In 2015, we are pretty sure we had one visit our camp at night....but that was really our fault...we didn’t practice bear safe principles to the letter back then. Craig had food in the tent...😳.

Wow!!! I was all set to leave such a nice comment then "Mr. Under Armour" had to blow it with his usual tackiness. Does he get compensation for all that advertising he does for UA? I can overlook him though cause I love you guys, but you should at least have a company car. Hahahaha Now Barbara (I direct the rest of the comments to you) that sure was nice picking up trash after buttheads that don,t care about anything except themselves. Such a shame. When my oldest daughter and I were there in 2014 it was perfectly clean and only one older couple on the whole trail and North Texas Hiker may like to know a black bear scared the doodoo out of them just ahead of us. They are out there. Waiting for part 2, it,s a great trail. Can I make Under Armour Craigs trail name?????

I love this!! You can call Craig whatever you want ...lol!! Yeah, that's funny, when we did this trail in July of 2015, we only saw one older couple on the trail and I don't recall any trash either. You are right there are bears, they are just generally more scared of us and stay clear....until you leave food in the tent by accident, then they come sniffing at your tent at 2 in the morning (2015 experience). Part 2 will be out tomorrow morning!! Thanks so much for watching!!
