Backpacking Basics - Protect Your Hands, Face and Head - Winter Gear

- My Winter Kit -
With the winter in full swing and with so many of my snow adventures being posted, I have been receiving a constant stream of questions concerning the gloves, hat, mask and mittens that I am often using and wearing.
In this video, I will be touching upon each of those items and what I like about them also, what I dislike. I have reviewed most of these products already so if you have specific questions that I didn’t answer in this video about one of these items, those questions are likely to have been answer in their individual reviews.

Knit Gloves :
During 99% percent of the cold months, this is what I am wearing; these are knit gloves and they provide just enough protection to keep me warm without overheating. I find for myself this is enough for most conditions unless it is extremely windy and cold to keep me comfortable. When I need more, I generally go with the Mutant Mitts which I will talk about here in a moment.
Pros :
Knit gloves are normally very inexpensive and can often times be found in bundles; 3 pairs for $3 dollars sort of thing. If you go looking for knit gloves with a name brand on them you’ll pay more though.
Keep me just warm enough that I can wear them without getting too hot.
Cons :
Low durability - a pair usually lasts me a season or so; fingers will fall part first
Getting the right size can be difficult; even those with medium sized hands will find it hard to locate gloves that fit correctly - you don’t want material sticking up passed your fingers.
Because of the fitting issues, I would recommend trying them on before you buy; knit gloves can easily be found in most department stores.
Advice - if you have this issue, look at the kid sizes; since the gloves stretch they will fit medium size adult hands and will be less expensive.
....
Outdoor Research Mutant Mittens :
Pros :
Inexpensive for high quality mittens, warm, versatile, liner can be removed, waterproof.
Cons :
Bulky, heavy, and finding the right size for you can be difficult as they have been discontinued.
The good news is that OR makes a ton of variants of mittens and they can be found rather inexpensively on eBay. The FireBrand mittens are an excellent choice.
.....
IO Merino Wool Mask (Limitless Bandana) :
IO Merino Email Address : hello@io-merino.com
I’ve had this product for a very long time and I wish that it was still available because it is excellent! Easy to put on, it stays in place, it’s warm and even keeps your neck warm.
Pros :
Comfortable, warm, blocks wind,
Cons :
Discontinued
It was expensive for what it was.
Finding a good substitute isn’t easy during the age of covid; if you search for mask every result has to do with the virus and not with winter weather. If you search for bandana the results are the same.j
This isn’t the same as a neck gaiter or a buff and making one from merino fabric or even from a merino wool shirt might be a good option for some people.
Everyone should email IO Merino and ask that they bring back out the Limitless Bandana as there is no product like it. I’ve put their email address in the description box.
.....
Smartwool 150 Hat/Beanie :
Pros :
Just warm enough to make me comfortable.
Long enough to cover ears
Good price
Cons :
Previously there were different versions of this beanie from Smartwool and some were shorter than others. To make it worse, in the past, smartwool did a terrible job of making it clear which one that you are looking at.... I put a link to what I believe are the longer versions in the description box. That isn’t an affiliate link, I’m just trying to help out. I don’t care if you buy this or anything else as it doesn’t benefit me at all.
Advice : These hats are very lightweight and because of that, I will often carry two with me just in case that one gets soaking wet while backpacking and hiking. If that does happen, I have a dry one which I can change into say when I get to camp.

Luke, your videos are the only videos that I will interrupt what I’m doing to watch. You keep doing a good, honest job, man. You have me, hook, line and sinker. I wear a light military toboggan, fleece sock hat, whatever. It’s warm enough and drys quickly. I also wear the light wool gloves with rubber dots on the palms and go up to waterproofs when necessary. I wear a wool scarf around my neck most of the time. It allows me to drape it around my face or down over my chest or get it off my neck to cool down quickly. Good to see you out again. Texas

I'm using mittens from a German ski gear brand named Reusch. They were that expensive my mom called my crazy when i bought them. Now, twenty years later they are still like new and they never loosen their warmth. I'm using them in very cold conditions when skiing on high altitudes, hiking, bycicle and so on... It was quitte an investment back in those days but they are worth every cent.

I've read all the comments prior to composing the following: I normally have a Buff Headgear & wear it as a neck gaiter. I can easily reconfigure it for neck & head, & if it gets gusty windy I can reconfigure it into a full face balaclava. I normally have a 100% wool Military Watch cap on my head & on top of my Buff Headgear when it's configured to cover my neck & head. My mittens are Cabela's Gore-Tex mittens that have glove liners. The mittens are insulated & have a gauntlet that covers my lower forearm & can be cinched down with a cord lock. Insulated, windproof, waterproof which is everything I want in a pair of cold weather mittens.

Great gear and good advice, Luke. I'm always searching on the internet, REI, Cabela's, Outdoor World and military surplus for deals on clothing apparel for all seasons. I've even found great bargains at Goodwill stores...amazing what people donate, oftentimes new items with price tags still attached. I recently bought a Boreal anorak for $40, a size larger than I wear but as an outer layer it doesn't matter to me. An original from New Zealand costs in the 400 dollar range. I picked up two pair of mittens at a Dollar Tree and although they looked small I was able to get them on my XL hands and they are reasonably thick...great for wearing while you sleep in camp. Target sells some nice merino wool neck gaiters but you need to time your shopping for as soon as they are put on the rack, they're gone by the day's end. Their merino wool beanies and gloves go quickly as well. I'm perfectly happy using my shemaghs as neck warmers, head protection from wind, snow and sand. My favorite hand warmer is a sleeve similar to the ones football players wear on the field. Mine came with a Vanquest waist pack but has its own separate belt. I wear it just under my top layer and place a chemical hand warmer or an Ocoopa rechargeable hand warmer in it. It not only serves to warm my hands but the inner layers of clothing in the front of my body as I never feel the cold in my back. I have put my Pathfinder stainless steel bottle filled with hot water in the sleeve and placed it in my bedroll before climbing in or under for the night.

Personally i wear a Minus 33 beanie (230 weight merino) only $22 vs $30 for a Smart wool 250 weight. For a neck gaiter i use either the OG poly buff a ridge merino buff (both very light weight) or a Smartwool 250 weight, those are al ong enough to stay tucked in at your neck and at least come up over your nose and ears. for liners Ragg wool fingerless gloves + minus 33 liners or the possom down gloves. usually that is fine for hiking if htere is no wind, but i have Skydeer fleece gloves or Stormy Cromer mitts for when its colder (wind will blow right through either of those. I do need a good winter glove / mitt myself and was looking at the OR high camp trigger finger mitts. or maybe some Kincos and will water proof them after the fact.

I’ve had good luck with the Outdoor Research Flurry Sensor gloves, 43% wool- the rest synthetic, $40 REI. The Smartwool 150 benie doesn’t completely cover my ears, maybe I have a big head. A few years back I bought a 100% Merino Wool Buff, but I think they were discontinued. Incidentally, Buffs are made in Barcelona Spain because I saw their factory when I was prepping for the El Camino Trail in 2017. Barcelona is not on the El Camino however, my Spanish friends aunt lives there.

I bought the ODR Mutant mitts after you said how great they are a few years ago . And they are great . They "did" have them on COLEMANS Military Surplus ... OK I just looked . They DO have them for a steal at $59 in XL & XXL , They do NOT have any S/M/L tho. The other gloves that are just as good IMO are the Canadian " Choppers " , which are Canadian Military extreme weather mitts . I saw those on Robinet's channel after he raved about them . Kind of like the U.S . extreme weather cold mitts that have been out for years . The "choppers " are more heavy duty and white ... Gubs

Merino wool neck buffs: checkout Outdoor Vitals just released new ones. I just got them and the full size one reminds me for the merino IQ one you have.

Luke, I rarely see you dealing with glasses fogging up even with the gaiters and such. Is there something you use that works well to prevent that?

I used to use anti fog wipes on my safety glasses ( I work in a laboratory) that performed well. There are many different brands that make them. Moisture will still condense on them, but they won't fog up and block your vision.

I live in South Florida and spit in my mask to prevent fogging when I’m scuba diving. Guess that wouldn’t work too well in a winter situation. 🥴

@@onionhead5780 true. But if you spit treat them ahead of time it does help. Best product I ever had was aviation anti fogger given to me by a private pilot
