Nicole and I love movies and we are lucky to have our own home theater room. Just outside that room, is a recess with an outlet on the wall intended for a back-lit poster frame. The one that came with the house was made with fluorescent tubes and was falling apart. So this is my replacement. It features a dimmable LED light strip and a double sided poster (which gives the best results when backlit).

Great work Ive seen a few companies like glowbox sell these prebuilt starting at $300 and up. I collect movie posters and the standard movie theater is 27x40 double sided posters but Im curious if single sided posters look as good.

Single sided does not look hood at all, i builded my own lighted poster for my theater and used double sided posters, i tried single sided and did not look very good
I am very excited about making this project to put outside our new movie room, thanks for the inspiration and tips!
This really helps, I get a lot of things from work I've wanted to turn into light boxes and now I have some instruction to help me get started. Thanks!
Thank you, I purchased all the supplies you named and created my own. Thanks again :)
Absolutely amazing. 5 Stars !
Looks good! And the poster is still timely, just fun coincidence that the fourth one recently came out.
Love to see your home theater and equipments you use in the theater. Also wanna see your diy projects you made for it. like you I am also Home theater nerd.

Awsome thanks for the tips. Always enjoy watching you in shop.
Great project, I’ll show this to my shop students, well done sir
Nice build my friend. I really like it and how you showed us how you made it!
1. Cool project. 2.fellow home theater nerd 3. Show us your home theater, especially and millwork or custom stuff you have done. I did a similar project but then changed to a TV I use rotated on its side (a pair of them) that runs software to have digital posters that cycle. Ended up being not that much more (got a used 50" hdtv for a steal). Just gives me so many more options than a static poster.

Very nice Marc.
Here's a tiny DIY addition your poster holder to keep it cool. Either on the back panel, or top/bottom, you can add one or more small 60-80mm computer cooling fans which consume very little power and have miniscule noise levels, if any at all. You can add a "BLACK" micro-dust filter to the fan covers to reduce or eliminate light leak concerns, collect micro-dust floaties and provide incoming (bottom), air flow and exhaust (top), while keeping things inside very cool. This is commonly referred to as the "push-pull" method of creating circulating air. . If you opt for the back panel fan set up, you'll need to add a tiny amount of flow space of around 1/4" such as small rubber stick-on feet/spacers. This small addition shouldn't interfere with the front of the frame. Mount the fans inside, incoming on the bottom and outgoing on top, add your light/dust filters, and you have it. A movie poster frame that's awesome looking and stays cool all day long. A standard vacuum cleaning every 4 months will keep them running for a long time. . I learned this little tip/trick, from my grandpa. He created a 24x36 backlit window for underneath the end of our PC desk, which also faces the door. As clients come in, they see a sample of our work brightly lit and in living color. it stays on all day and most of the night. Well, at least until we decide to shut down for the day. . Give this a try and let me know if worked for you. . ~Alexa Shaw, Photographer . PS - Loved the video, hope to see more.

Hey Alexa that seems like a good idea actually..BTW is there any way to make this poster light although the day without any issue like avoiding the LEDs getting burnt for quite a long period of time(Weeks,Months or Years)? or will I have to use different bulbs if iam to power it from a plug socket Appreciate your help

@@imgroot5845 After discussing your question with my grandpa (an avid DIY'r & master photographer), if I understand it correctly, adding the fans I've described + adding slots to the back, or even better a "soft-fiber window screen, not metal, to the entire back rather than closing it in would offer large amounts of air flow. Also, if you intend to run this all throughout the day, place your display frame where there is a constant flow of cool air to help the fans. . Another tip would be to purchase the slightly most costly CRI95+ rated LED strips. Don't cheap out! Another tidbit, look for the "KITS" that allow you to adjust the colors AND the power levels. . Ours have wireless remotes that allow all adjustments, even flashing and the speed of the flash. Power can be set at OFF, 25%, 50%, and 100%. . Lining the edges of the frame with regular kitchen foil, gluing it down with a rubber cement or "vinyl tile" type of glue then placing the LED strips on top of the foil will provide an added layer of cooling as aluminum cools rapidly. Be sure no solder or wires touch the foil. An easy fix with a hot glue gun to insulate them. . And yet another tip would be to add small, 1/4 to 3/8" high/thick, round rubber (or felt), stick-on feet/pads to the back of the four corners of your frame. This will prevent your frame from sitting flush against the wall, will allow the fans to draw in cool air from outside of the frame and offer greater air flow. . As a standard the "top" operational longevity of CRI95+ LED strips/LEDs, are rated at 50,000 (or about 5.5 years), hours before burning out. . Hope this helps get you and running with your poster holder. . ~Alexa Shaw, Just A Simple Photographer

@@imgroot5845 You’re quite welcome. We (my colleagues and I), love to share our knowledge and experience with others. This is ridiculously cool.
Incredible work love it :)
My reason for building a light box like this is because it's awesome. It's its own reason!
Great looking piece. I have been wanting to try an infinity box
I'm throwing all my roundover bits out today!!! Team chamfer.
Thanks for posting this! This is the closest thing to something I'm trying to configure while I've got down time. I think from a guesstimate here, my figuring for lighting is inline minus a dimmer switch. Thanks so much. 🙂 I've got a few gargantuan murals I want to do for starters.

I like your edit!!
Great ideas. You could fit a time switch or a PIR sensor to manage the time that the lights are on.
THIS!!!!!! I am a photographer and I saw a photo in Chicago displayed like this and it deeply affected me. I love how prints turn out but I pour so much into the editing process that I realized viewing art backlit, like it is on my computer screen when I have photoshop open, ends up dramatically changing how I feel about the end result.
Inspiring, awesome build! Suggesting a motion sensor switch
I sure could use your help on my many home projects--you're so talented! I think you'd like the illuminated Cinema Curtains I created. I've been thinking about making a film/poster box for some time. Just bought a 13 x 19" movie poster so was looking once again into it. Anyways, thanks--you have the best tools!!
Awesome!!
You can still add ventilation without letting light out. You'll need to glue some tubing that bends into each hole (either flexible tubing or something with joints). Bend the tubing into as "S" shape or similar, and it will be an effective light block - if the inside of the tube is painted matte black it work even better. If the holes are at the top and the bottom, the natural rise of warm air will get enough circulation happening so LED heat shouldn't be an issue. I'd recommend at least 2 or 3 holes in both the top and bottom for even ventilation.

Sweet 👌🏻
This project has inspired me to get a home theater....lol

A Toy Story 3 poster is never dated. Great project!
I couldn't fin plexi big enough, but found a flimsy plastic in a poster frame just before KMART closed for $17. Worked for me.
You can easily allow air through but not light, just use a folded internal channel top & bottom and paint the inside matt black. It's more work but it removes any restrictions on operating time.
About the LEDs building up heat and needing vent holes...use those holes and their escaping light as an added effect. Angle the holes and give yourself a projected " \ | / " on the wall above and below the frame, and that would be more than enough ventilation to never really have to worry about the built up heat.
I built one of these several years ago and I ended up going with a snap frame strictly because plexi glass is so expensive. Those things are so awesome. We have several different posters that we rotate through. Yours is awesome. Great video.
No one is a nerd You are a great KZreadr
Marc......you're like a Jedi Master of Wood......and yet as evidence with your drill press comment, there is no pretense....."Mere Mortal," and that's why I love watching your channel! DD
Add a PC cooling fan to dissipate the heat. Cool project.
Time to make 2 small versions of these with New England Patriots posters for each side of my 65” TV. Just in time for football season.
If you're adding vents, drill holes in the back panel every so often (obviously not where the lights will be) the drill the vent holes on top on the other side where the plug will go. No light spill and ventilation to let the heat out. Drill holes on the bottom in the same spots for cold air intake without the light spill.
Harvest the plexi and the diffuser from an old big screen TV. I’ve been collecting sheets for when I finally get to making my frames.
Gotta love a nice chamfer.
I'm living the chamfer life to!
Install a smart outlet and have it looked to a motion sensor. Or a cheap switch with a built in motion sensor so it only turns on when you walk downstairs
I want!!
What a great idea change transparent acrylic to light pannel using sanding machine!
Very awesome! Do you need a special poster?
Going forward I think all WoodWhisperer videos have Duggee breaks in them. While you are at it include in guild videos too.
Marc, you are amazing at wood working. I would like to try that out sometime soon.
Good tutorial! Thanks. Any idea to have the wire not show if I don't have an outlet right behind the picture? (and no batteries)
A reasonable add-on... is a motion sensor... to turn it on and off.. :)
For the poster did you use the typical poster you might buy at Walmart or is it a special poster that is specifically made to be back lit?

You are supposed to use doublesided movie posters, you can find just about any on Ebay for good prices
Great project. I was hoping for a link to the led light strips supplier. I am looking for something just like that :) Thanks.
Hello nice video and great detailed step by step, thanks for that. what kind of poster did you used, i mean what kind of materiel used to print desired picture, Thanks in Advance!
For a shadow box already built, should I buy spacers to hold the print in place?
Great project and rendering! I'm going to start! I was thinking of taking led neon lights rather than led strips to avoid the effect of shadow spots and avoid putting a 20 meter ribbon lol What do you think ? THANKS
Great video..is the movie poster just a normal poster or specifically printed to be back lit. Can I do this with any poster?

They're printed on plastic, not really double sided, more like the other side is like a mirror of the front, so it lights clearly.
Love what you do. Would you be willing to create a lightbox for me? I am getting a lightbox ready poster made (as I just learned it has to be of certain specifications). I would like to keep it on during the evenings.... sometimes. So it will have more use than just an on and off etc. For that reason, I guess some built in ventilation would help for the LEDs etc. From everyone who I have seen do it, you did the most clean and art-worthy. Let me know. Thanks !
Instead of the ply wood could you use a sheet of aluminium instead? Would this help with the heating issues asit would act like a heat sink? Just a thought?
OK, now you must do a theater tour. Pleeeeeeeez

If you follow me on Instagram, my profile has a save Story showing the renovation work and the final result.
Not sure what I did wrong, but I built mine the same way including sanding the back piece of plexiglass on both sides. But I’m getting a very definitive “S” shape of light coming through from the LED light strip. Any thoughts?
can it be any regular poster or does it have to be a certain type of print?
2:59 Or if you want to save $50-$100, you could just buy a cheap clamp, use it to hold the drill upright and push the edge of the wood into it. But make sure you have a sturdy heavy table.
Instead of the inserts how do I feel about WW thread taps? No good on end grain? It’s only a picture frame not a bed right?
I'm going to ask the same question that others have that has not been answered. So, what poster did you use? Anything special?
what kind of equipment do you have for your theater?
Should have done this before I glued it up... Story of my life :(
That looks really awesome Marc . Just one thing how did u attach the poster to the glass .
@woodwhisperer
5 жыл бұрын
It's not attached. It's just placed between the layers of plexi.
Can we replace double sided poster with printed translite paper?
Why not install computer fans inside frame with vent in back covered with cloth to limit light penetration?
I see you"re sanding the plexiglass.. bit can i also buy opal white plexiglas? And what kind of color led do you use??
Does this only work with 2 sided posters?
Great video! Did you say say sand BOTH SIDES of the plastic? Thanks
