Backlight and Bivert a Game Boy Pocket - Full Install

Pockets are the bane of my modding existence... but, this is how I backlight them! BennVenn (and probably others too) are releasing a drop-in version soon, so this method will be considered the "old" way pretty soon.

    Pretty hopeful tutorial on how to do this the safest way possible! But I can’t wait to see if you’ll do an RGB dmg tutorial. I believe you said that as a passing comment on your backlit DMG tutorial, but I don’t want to hold you accountable for something you don’t want to do.

    curious.. can you delaminate the reflective layer off the back of a GBA screen, and install a similar back light to it, making a backlit version of the original GBA screen?

    hi. i hope u can answer my question. there are vertical line color/shades inaccuracies on my gameboy pocket screen when there is a contrasting color/shade ie. grid in the background. i think it only happens when there is a column from a building in a background and the vertical line extends to where it shouldnt be from the top or bottom. can i fix this by resoldering the screen ribbon cable?

    I know that it's a comment from 3 years ago but for the future lurkers: I was out of IPA so I've used nail polish remover (Acetone), and I think it worked even better than an IPA but be aware that it can damage plastic parts, so it's better to be careful and not apply it to anything except the glass itself

    Desoldering the ribbon is super tricky-I just ruined a screen this way (accidentally yanked off two of the "teeth" contacts of the top layer). Other tutorials I've seen tell you to keep the ribbon on and just work beneath it carefully when removing the backlight... something to consider before you begin!

  • @esotericsean

    @esotericsean

    I’ve done lots both ways and haven’t ruined any screens by desoldering the ribbon, but definitely have destroyed some by not. But it’s possible both ways for sure :) That said, I think most people are just dropping in new IPS screens now anyway, heh.

  • @ermyril

    The funny part is that I’ve tried desoldering the ribbon, but I haven’t had the quick solder thing (low melting point solder) so I’ve tried to remove it using the regular solder. I overheated the ribbon and those teeth got burned basically, so another screen is dead So unless you have a low melting point solder it’s definitely safer to not touch the ribbon :’(
