I built swimming pools for many years and have thousands of hours on a backhoe. If, on the first pass, you start shallow and let the bucket go gradually deeper as you pull it towards you, you will have a nice, clean, sharp 90° angle between the grass (top of ground) and the sidewall of the ditch, instead of raising the bucket and making the ground break upwards wherever it chooses. I’m not better than anyone else. I’m just chiming in bc I miss running a backhoe. I’m retired now and thinking of buying one just to play with. Lol

Jason would be impressed your ditch is straight and clean, its not easy digging a trench with a backhoe when your used to running an excavator.

It would be nice to see an update on the house. You own the backhoe and it does the job.

You should have borrowed our Ditch Bitch Chris. It's powered by a 350 Chebby and trenches at 3.5 mph while making a 4' deep 8" wide trench. You just have to watch out for those black roots with all those tiny different color wires in them. LOL

All the equipment I use these days has joysticks. I would love to run that machine.

That was the best video of a backhoe digging a ditch that I have ever seen! On the serious side, glad you'll be able to "get connected" / hardwired onto the internet, and good trenching work. No big deal having some extra dirt to push in, like you say.... easier to pack.

I'd put a conduit or sleeve on each side of that trench if it makes any sense at all for a future water, gas, etc line, even if just to serve maybe an entrance to your property. I see 24" trenches for exactly the purpose of two lines.

I love those old school deere and case tractors with the sticks instead of joy controls thats how i learned as a kid

Seriously, did you mark that out with guides or use a laser that we can’t see or something? Do you use a part of the ho, like the boom or dipper to gauge your distance from the tarmac? Any advice gratefully received especially as I need to trench my house pad very soon! More power to you and thanks for all the great videos. PS more backhoe maintenance and technical shit like how to do tricky stuff please? Have a 580e with one reasonable brake, 2 wheel drive, leaking everywhere and a 15* slope and 100 acres that requires constant thought and vigilance so as to stop killing your self. Did you get the grade right do the data flows?

Do you have any trouble switching controls from your John deer to your excavation equipment. I’ve been watching the controls and it seems to me they are backwards from each other, or is it just me.

Trenchers are a pain in the ass! Up here I NW PA we have rock, clay, hard pan you name it. I can dig a ditch twice as fast with my excavator. I'm in the same boat you are with that ditch. My kubota 40 excavator with thumb has 14 inch pin in thumb, so narrowest bucket I have is 18 inch. Kinda overkill for waterline and electric.

That looks great. Top notch job! Is that a line just for your house? Just wondering where it will tie in and why the cable company is not digging the ditch for it? Thanks!

letsdig18 I do subcontract work burying conduit for a cable company in PA, the price people are willing to pay to have internet​ is unbelievable

When you reach out with the bucket and pull it back to create a flat bottom to the trench. Does the backhoe automatically move it back such that the trench is flat or is that all manually controlled by you?

On this machine it is manual. He did upload a video a while back where he demoed a computerized trenching system to control that - it's still manual, but you have a screen in front of you telling you if you're high or low.

So nice when you can just dig without blasting through rock ledge.

Too bad you weren't doing this in Hawaii in May. Could've gave Pele a fast track to the sea without taking out a single house. (Would have needed more excavators working as a team to dig the ditches fast enough)

Are you lifting your outrigger or lifting off with the hose? Is that backhoe 4wd? Minr is, it makes pushing off difficult.

I had a bucket you could borrow, Charlie's coming up my way to pick up a generator he could have took it back "12" it fits a 310 G I think the G and he E had the same linkage.

If you come dig a ditch for me will it get internet installed at my place? I'm beyond worn out trying to get a square answer out of any of the high speed providers on what it would take. I basically called and said "I'll pay for the whole install, just need to know who to write the check to" and they still don't seem to want to help out. The thought of running my house off an air card is hard to stomach after years of super high speed cable in the 'burbs.

Just tried my tractor back hoe atatchment...I am awful! The attachment works.fine but the operator is not so good at this point. Is there a video where he says the stick movements he is making out loud? Maybe that would help me.

Tony Hawkinson, that's because all of the utilities are up by the road. He's on private land with no ROWs or easements. He's lived out there long enough that locates have probably been done in the past.

You could watermark your video's with your logo so that acts as a bit of a deterrent. Easy enough to do depending on what video editing software you are using.
