Background Check #2: Mr. SID - Creator of SONIC for the C64 (and many other games & tools)

Ғылым және технология

This is Episode #2 of Background Check featuring Andreas Varga (alias Mr. SID) the creator of SONIC for the C64.
This week I talk to Mr. SID himself, the creator of Sonic the Hedgehog for the C64 as well as Prince of Persia, Canabalt, Donkey Kong Jr. and many more. Who is he? Why and how did he make Sonic for the C64? What were the technical challenges? Will Sonic ever run on NeoRam or GeoRam. Find out in this video.
Find out more about Andreas in this video.

The things Mr.Sid has made is amazing. He is my C64 ultimate hero. Like C64 scene on the IPad and IPhone. And all the great games Andreas is talking about in his interview. Another hero is Gideon Zweijtzer with his ultimate64. I would say get yourself one. The ultimate C64 has a ram extension unit build in (REU). And play games like Sonic and Prince of Persia to name a few. Thanks for this in depth interview. And mr. Sid for all your amazing work. Please continue the enlightenment of the scene.

Yep. It's easy to forget how much work goes into a project like this. Especially when you try to make it cycle accurate.

Thanks! I wonder why no one else asked him for a video interview. That is really strange considering how popular Sonic for the C64 is.

says he's more of a technical guy talent-wise and would be more difficult to design a game from scratch - totally relate to that, but definitely admire his tecnical skills very much. Also glad this interview explored the reasoning about the use of the C64 REU - was very inrigued about the DMA capability and realized that could be a powerful asset itself, and I was not wrong. That REU support is present in TheC64 Mini/Maxi/Vic20 means there's a definitive target platform for C64 games that make use of the REU - and modern REU clones are out there for those with real C64s. The REU was not widely supported by games back in the day - is high time to make up for that

That's true. There can be a lot of great games be made for the REU. Next Sunday I have a video that goes into the technical details of the REU / Geo-/NeoRAM.

Oh so cool! I’ll watch it tonight. I’m currently creating force dice for a mentalist customer. I’m casting resin dice with magnet in them to force the “snake eyes” aka two ones. I’m making a video of that, as I’m doing it. Because it has some electronics in it as well. To turn the electromagnet assembler in the table on and off remotely. I guess by now my first resin poor is set up to the next. But I love those background interview!

What a shame The c64 was Not prebuild with a slot expansion possibillity inside, cabable of housing eg. A ram, cpu and math coprocessor. The Reu makes games and video so much more fun.

Yep. Thats The reason The vic and c64 was so cheep, After all. The edge connectors was ok. But just Imagine If Commodore had left space for a “future” funktion where a connector Could be installed. And a small detector rutine in The kernal to kick The c64 into an extended mode, To access and use it. But again. We had The c64, and No matter how we twist and turn it, that small machine, still live 40 years After it was introduced. Even in its non expanded state, its capable of so much.

Any chance that Mr. Sid would consider developing and or releasing an IDE-according to his preference-to design, develop and release games for the C64 on present day hardware (ie Macs or PCs)?

Nobody made Sonic for the C64, someone made it for a C64 and one of the rarest upgrades that cost a fortune and ZERO are for sale so it is Sonic for EMULATORS ONLY. Get it right mate.

@@ashtavakra70 Does my comment mention anything other than "Sonic on Commodore 64" ? No. If it doesn't run on an actual Commodore 64 as designed by Commodore in 1982 then it is not for a Commodore 64, it's Sonic for REU.
