Backdraft Cobra: Street and Track Review

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

It's a beautiful summer day, also known as cobra season. Time to dust the cob webs off the beauty and take her for a drive. Stay till the end for 7 liters of noise

    I have BD car 1209 with a carbureted Roush 427r. There is nothing that compares to the experience you get driving these cars. They are extremely fast but also demand serious respect because you can get yourself in trouble fast.

    The Holy Grail is a track shootout between similarly equipped Backdraft, Factory Five and Superformance. Even if they all had IRS, it's probably impossible to find all three with the same tires, horsepower, and gearing.

    Great video. Gave me an opportunity to see what it's like to actually own one of these. I've been looking at the Backdrafts for a while now, and you have summed it up precisely. This isn't a car you buy because it's practical or useful. You are paying purely for a visceral experience, and for that this car pays off in spades. The power, the sound, the look. It's sex on wheels for a car enthusiast. I'm finding it hard to resist.

I will post a video this spring like you did. You did a great job describing what its like to own this type of car.

    Great car... Point to note and to give credit where due is that Backdraft and Superformance are both South African companies. Cars built there and drivetrains added in the US.

    I have one and its badass. but need to respect its power. Mine is the 427 iconic engine. 5 speed. serious stereo . The canvas top sucks as its too hot inside, so get the toureau cover. Agree it does not make sense to own per se. But its is sweet. I set all the car alarms off in any parking garage as it is so loud.

    Nice cobra! I plan to build one with FF. Question about the track lap section. I see you are not changing gears, are you constantly in 5th gear? I would assume its probably difficult to change gears while needing two hands on the steering wheel being that (assuming here) there is no power steering?

  • @lcsgarage3619

    @lcsgarage3619

    Thank you! Pineview Run is a short and technical track. The way this car is geared, i didn’t really need to shift too much. I kept it mostly in 2nd the entire time. If I was going for a faster lap, I could have dropped it to first on the tighter S turns, but this car has plenty torque to do without that. On a couple non filmed laps, I shifted 1-3, but I wanted to give the full rev range on camera (sounded best). Not having power steering isn’t the worst on this car because it’s very light. Slow speeds is somewhat difficult, but anything above 10-15mph is very easy

    Mine is going to have the Roush 427SR (ALTHOUGH I'm contemplating & Gen3 Coyote Motor w/an 8stack+tune! EASY 520hp which is plenty for a car like THIS. Better drivability, BULLETPROOF engine, more revs😏, better mpg #winwin)

    @@ssqpolo ghost cam tune on the coyote for the sound maybe? My wife and I are shopping them now as I have longed for one of these for as long as I can remember and life is now going to allow it. I had a 86 chevette I put a 434 sbc in and was a blast in a straight line also raced a shifter kart with a cr534 two stroke on it and im thinking now is cobra time :)

    Beautiful Cobra. Seems like a blast to drive. I've been thinking about pulling the trigger on one of these for a few years - but mine will have the Roush 427IR (fuel injected). Do these require a lot of maintenance? Do you do it yourself or take it in for service to a trusted mechanic? Thanks for the video.

  • @lcsgarage3619

    @lcsgarage3619

    IR will be an awesome setup! I thought the motor would be more moody because it’s Carb’d and I let it sit for long periods at a time; however it’s been absolutely fine. Always fires right up. Has never been any issues. I had backdraft do the first 2 services, but after moving, I’ve maintained it. It’s a very simple car, so oil changes are very easy. You’re gonna love yours. Let me know if you have any questions.

    The Roush 427r engine isn't for everyone. It is a full race engine with a very radical cam. It has a very lumpy idle that sounds great but produces very little vacuum at idle and does not like being below 2k rpms because it produces low torque below 2k. Conversely, it gets from 2.5 to 6.5 rpms scary fast. Driving one would be recommended before a purchase. I love mine.

    I wouldn't say its a useless car. I would say its a four wheeled motorcycle, and anyone who wants one should regard it as such. On a side note, life is good when you have so much torque that you don't need to shift.
