Back to Work On the Cub Cadet 782 - Power Steering and Three-Point Hitch Install - Part 1

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Fair warning - this is kind of a lazy video without a good ending. I wasn't going to upload these clips, but I decided to salvage them from the recycle bin and edit them into a half-decent (cringe-worthy) video.
Back in March when all the COVID panic started and we were all sent home from school, I tore into the 782 to fix the leaking intake manifold and redo the charging and ignition system. While the engine was out, I decided to move forward with the power steering swap. I swapped out the front axle with the super-steer front axle from a Cub Cadet 1862, and installed the power steering cylinder and hard lines from an 1864 tractor. The steering shaft/valve assembly needed to be converted from tilt to straight shaft, so I cut the 1864 steering shaft to length and welded a coupler in place to eliminate the CV joint. The local exhaust shop flared a piece of pipe which I then welded to the original steering column tube and installed in the tractor (with a lot of difficulty). A couple hoses needed to be custom-made by the local hydraulic shop, and I had an issue with the routing of the hard lines from the pump as they were interfering with the driveshaft. I also had to wait for some parts to come in so I could put the engine back together, so I decided to install the 3-point hitch while waiting. I hit a roadblock here too, because I couldn't install the hitch without running the engine to cycle the hydraulics. So I had hit roadblocks everywhere I turned.
At the time, school was picking up (it was during the dog days of the spring semester). I also had to focus on fixing the 316 to get it ready for the new owner, getting the '89 318 ready for my uncle, and had just bought the 882, so I had a lot of other distractions from the project and decided to take a break for a few months. I just recently returned to the project and am working hard to get the tractor back together with the power steering and 3-point. Part 2 of this installment of the project will follow shortly.

I should note that the first two clips were taken at about 1:00 AM while I was practically falling asleep. Gotta love late nights in the garage or the shop.

Check with Xtreme Motorworks if you want to go brand new. If you're looking for a used hitch, Ray Weaver at Ray's IH Parts should have one.

Thanks Jon. I knew trying to get everything fitted just right would be a PITA, but I'm glad most of the parts were a direct swap. Every major component on this tractor except for the Onan engine is an OEM Cub Cadet part.

My in laws have a B7200 Kubota and it leaked oil out the top of the steering column. Seal kits for the steering valve are no longer available. I discovered it was the same steering valve as the one in a newer 318. I checked at my local dealer for seal kit and no longer available through deere. I ended up buying a used steering valve from Fultons mower Salvage. The only thing different between the two was the Kubota column was shorter then the Deere. Swapped columns around and everything worked as it should.

I'm surprised your dealer couldn't get the seal kit, it's still available through Deere online. Part number AM107078 and it's about $94.

Parts tractors (or even a similar running tractor) really do help with putting things together. Having a 106 made it a lot easier to put back together the 107. Now I'm only waiting for a replacement carb for it in the mail... anyway nice work, seemed like a pretty big challenge but you powered through it.

You would be time and money ahead to just sell it and buy a 1250. There's not much room to work between those frame rails, as far as mounting an auxiliary pump goes. Someone did it on a 782 that they converted over to a gear drive, but those 82 series tractors have much more room in the engine compartment.
