Back To Sony (from Nikon)

I do photography just for hobby and love Nikon. But kinda get it why professionals move to Sony (or even Canon). Sony is a reliable camera, full of lens options both native + 3r party, and especially, on the auto focus part. Between, thank you for doing a Nikon gear review over past years!

With "PP" you refer to those two hobbyists "Chris" and "Jordan", which are more KZread entertainment channel clowns 😉 They represent hobbyists and nerds, given their background, not working professionals who write invoices for make-to-order client work. As hobbyists and nerds, Chris and Jordan represent the customer group which Nikon is trying to win with their Z8, and they obviously have some success in that. The Z8 seens well received in the nerd side of photography, as represented by all those gearheads in gear testing sites and channels. Allen's video instead is from a completely different perspective, from a heavy duty working professional. For that, the Z8 (and more so Nikon's lens choice) seems so little fit for purpose, that he even has to sell his Z8.

Allen, I hope you continue to enjoy Sony. Now, to be honest, I would have expected you to go up to the M43 but I would never have imagined that you would go to Sony basically for two reasons: the first and most important from my point of view, Sony in photography as far as I know and I tried 4 years ago, reproducing sky and skin tones did "strange things" and secondly, the ergonomics of its cameras. I've always heard you talk about "character" and if there is something I hear from photographers about Sony (always in photography, in video it is another story) it is that they are not comfortable with the colors or that they have to work a lot on editing. On the A7III and an A6300 that I tested, the focus was incredible, the dynamic range was excellent, but the colors were very saturated when there was sun and the skies looked like cell phone photos. With cloudy skies it hides a little more. Maybe they have corrected this in new models and the color science has been corrected.

I get your doubts:-) But - when I went to Sony in 2019 and 20 with the A7iii that was my first mirrorless. I found it small (after a dlsr) and with poor ergonomics. The Af was fantastic even on the A7iii. Then back to Nikon for 21,22 and 23 ending with the Z8 which finally caught up with the A7iii AF wise (but really not that much better!) The Z6ii and Z5 were way behind - using these for 2/3 years did get me used to mirrorless size and ergonomics so the Sony A7iv and A9ii which are slightly bigger than the Z's are now great to use - they're way more programmable than even the Z8 with Af that for me at weddings leaves nothing more to be desired. Colours - I do find them slightly different to Nikon - whether that's better or worse is hard to say - just different but with such variably lighting at weddings anyway it's no big deal. THE big deal are the Sony GM F1.4 primes which are way better than Nikon's plasticy and dull 1.8's and they really do combine stunning sharpness but WITH plenty of character. Can't compare to Nikon F1.2's but at twice the price and twice the size and weight of the Sony's they're not something I could carry around for a days wedding anyway. Cheers Allen

@@CreativePixelPhotos Thank you very much for answering. Hopefully in a few years I can try those Sony G Master lenses and see the results. I'm glad you're more comfortable in the new Sony bodies. Price, weight and size, combined with clarity and character are sufficient arguments to explain the change. I will continue to pay attention to new episodes. The best for you, cheers fromm Japan.

My Z9, after 3/4 million "actuations" still puts a smile on my face. I'm not overly concerned about the fact Nikons are larger and heavier. I actually prefer this over the toyish feel of the Sonys.

I am only an occasional shooter with a D810 and recently bought a Godox v1 flash. But I have always believed if someone with no legacy gear wants a camera they should go with Sony. The AF is just so advanced in the mirrorless space. Canon I believe is on par but has no their party lens support. Nikon now has 3 bodies with usable af in the z9,z8 and zf. But what I’m getting from this video is the z mount lens aren’t suitable for wedding needs. I wouldn’t have an issue with using f mount with an adapter but as I said for someone with no legacy glass was starting out I would go Sony.

Well this is a shocker! To be honest Allen I think you could have saved yourself an awful lot of angst, stress and a great deal of money too by just sticking to F Mount. The D780 is a solid workhorse camera, the live view is good enough for silent shooting at a wedding or other event, and it's a solid performer in low light. Even the normal shutter is pretty quiet. You could have just added another one or other F mount body and run with 2 cameras using dual slots. Kept the F Mount lenses you liked and run with those. Saying that I agree with the lack of F1.4 lenses on Z Mount, it's an obvious gap. This journey must have put a pretty large dent in that wallet - a lesson for others here though, if you have what works, just keep using it, and forget the marketing/hype.

Dear Allen, Lovely video as always. I thoroughly enjoy your thought process as I often go through something similar in my "quest" to find the best solution for myself, as elusive as it is (I won't say how much gear Ive changed through the years - its embarrassing). I've finally settled on a d700 as my "only" camera - the one that I take to my grave (that's my fourth(?) d700 - took me a while to get to this realization lol). I then decided to add a Z5 for a more modern "in the loop" camera foregoing the Z6 and 6 II as I feared those would be a pricey disappointment. Well for me the Z5 turned out to be utter garbage! So I quickly got a d780 - its no d700, but it just bloody works regardless of circumstances! So I'm never getting rid of the d780 either! A while back I tried and got rid of both a z50 and a zfc. After the z5 debacle I ended up repurchasing the zfc to get my mirrorless fix. The zfc is miles ahead of the z50 and z5 in autofocus - I use it only with viltrox lenses - 23 1.4, 33 1.4, 56 1.4 and the superb 75 1.2 - I really do enjoy Viltrox lenses - more than good enough but with just a tad of vintage character which I dont see in modern mirrorless lenses. Last year (or 2?) I briefly had a Sony a7 III. Very competent camera, but kind of made me not want to shoot - I found it very uninspiring for some reason. And also the colors... I had a very hard time making presets for it, and even still after applying the presets I still felt like I had to further edit almost every other photo manually. So that didnt last more than a few weeks. I hope the newer ones are better. Anyway - I'm very curious how this switch will pan out for you. As always, I find high value in your thoughts on these things!

This is what I hear a lot about using Sony cameras among us older togs. “..Sony cameras are Uninspiring…” this can be ergonomics etc. Nikon however imperfect that the af is… in that it is far from an uninspiring system. Those that use other systems are always enquire about Nikon imagery, clarity and color of its images. The Zf is far from perfect but it wins in spades ♠️ for inspiring shooting. It’s quickly becoming an EDC by many new and older togs. I use an Xpro3 and 18|1.4 as my EDC and truly love it. But the Zf is calling my name 😂. We will see what 2024 brings. I do however need to get clear answers from Nikons intention regarding the D500 mirrorless Z500/ Z90. Remember the D3/D300, then it was D5/D500. The APSC sensor was the same MP as the full frame. The Z9 is 45mp. The Fuji released a 40mp X-series of cameras in APSC size sensor. So it is possible for pro APSC to be 40~45mp. Now many talk about using z9/Z8 in crop APSC mode and getting near 20mp equivalent crop. But imagine an APSC with 40mp minimum with no crop on a 180600|6.3/ 400|4.5/ 600|6.3 with no crop, no compromise. I will own both full frame and pro APSC as I had in the past. Make it happen Nikon.

I'm about to head to India for 5 weeks of full-on photography. One Z6ii will have the 50 1.8 strapped on board and my other Z6ii will have the lovely 24mm 1.8s. I'm a Sony shooter, who has just ordered a Z8. Ergonomics of a toilet roll, is not a bad way to describe Sony Cameras. They work incredibly well but are joyless to use. Should that matter as a working pro? No, but it does. I want a higher MP stacked sensor camera so was left with the A1 at £6000 or the Z8 at £4000 when I need two, the £4000 I will save will get me some nice glass. The ability to go from 35 mm then into crop mode and still have around 20mp is what attracts me to the Z8.

Hi Allen, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but there is no perfect camera system. From my experience the two camera systems with the best eye autofocus tracking are Sony and Canon and are thus very popular with event and wedding photographers. Canon offers better ergonomics and durability while Sony offers state of the art technology and better lens options. Just one man's opinion. It essentially comes down to which system best suits your needs with the fewest compromises. The Sony a9/a9 II cameras offer amazing autofocus performance, dynamic range and image quality. Additionally, the Sony a9 provides excellent low light capability when needed as well. Wishing you great success with your Sony system going forward.

There might not be a perfect camera system, but there are certainly outdated camera systems, and that is much of the Nikon ecosystem. Nikon owned the aps-c sports/wildfire with the D500. They discontinued it last year, and never had, and still do not have official plans to replace it. Its been 8 years. Sony, Fuji, Canon have long ago eclipsed the D500. I wanted to upgrade to the D500; but for a few hundred dollars more, one could get a brand new Canon R7 with all its features, and I've chatted with plenty of D500 users that have split Nikon to get the R7. I don't need to explain the rest. Hard to fathom that Nikon would discontinue the D500 without having a competitive mirror-less offering, but they did - they willfully gave up their crown to Canon. Canon is behind on lenses now, but they have opened up to third parties and they are supposed to be making announcements early 2024.

Is Nikons 3d tracking with and without eye AF not the same as Sony active tracking. You do not mention that you use 3D tracking with the Z8. We are going opposite ways with cameras, I own Sony but have just ordered a Z8 . I will use my Sony Primes with the megadap adapter, which in testing works perfectly . As for the Sony bodies, to me they feel terrible in the hand, I've added grip extenders which helps a little. The rear LCD is garbage, even on the £6000 A1 and I hate and I do mean hate the flip out design on the A7iv. I also miss the top LCD from my DSLR days. If you are going for an 85 get the Sigma, it's a lot better than the very old Sony GM. I do agree the Sony 24 35 and 50 f1.4 are outstanding in every way. One other thing, if you use the Sony in the rain, make sure you have the plastic hotshoe cover on, as one drop of water will stop the camera from working. At times the A9 AF will struggle in really low light, if this happens switch to the A7IV which has newer AF.

I’m sorry you’ve gone back to Sony. My history is similar to yours. I did approx 500 weddings from 1980 until 2011, when I retired. High cost weddings I shot on 6cmx6cm med format film. Until digital, my first was in 2005. I moved from Canon in 1987 to Nikon, my first SLR was canon in approx 1968. They changed the mount the whole camera lens system etc. over night with no computability allowance. It cost me thousands. Nikon has never had the auto focus level of canon and also lost it to Sony some time ago, but that was not a priority to me as I was trained and skilled at manual focus. Enough boring info, sorry! I love Sony e mount lenses and the aperture rings are right up my street. The cameras I feel, are poorly built, advanced technology but unreliable in my experience. I have never owned a Sony camera but many of my friends have and do. As I said the GM lenses are great and I own several, I use them with an adaptor on my Z9, they feel better the Z lenses and I like them. To me enjoying the act of using equipment is equal to taking a stunning shot. I am so sorry you feel the need to swap over again. I have followed your KZread for a long time, and love moans and grips about equipment etc., that’s part of photography. But, I feel Sony are a massive corp. manufacturing brilliant high tech parts. But just like Ford they lead the market, but firms like Cosworth developed the quality high performance engines. I’m sorry but I will miss your channel and how I feel about your new supplier I will be after all this time unsubscribing. I not a ranter, and I wish you the very best of luck with your new camera.

Mirrorless promised an easier life for me with Face and eye af. Until the Z8 it's all been pretty disappointing. (I'm talking Nikon NOT Sony - the A7iii was damn good) Actually the D780 on auto area Af (talking the viewfinder not rear screen) does a better face/eye af job than the Z5 or Z6ii !! Also the whole screen having Af on mirrorless rather than the quite limited D780 area is a bonus. BUT - my issue is lenses, If Nikon had a range of F1.4 Z mount primes at half sensible prices that were a size I could carry for 8/9 hours I'd never leave Nikon! They don't and don't look as if they ever will as they seem locked into the 1.8 prosumer lenses that aren't special - or the crazy 1.2 lenses at crazy prices and are humungeous. Sony (and Sigma et al) have great 1/4's at sensible (for a pro photographer) prices that are a perfect size and weight and have better image quality than the plastic 1.8's from Nikon. I'm just editing Saturdays wedding where I shot with the Z8 with 50 f1.8 and the Sony A9ii with their 35 F1.4GM lens. Sorry but the Sony is winning on every aspect. Sharpness is way better even that the "acclaimed" Nikon 50 1.8S AND I like the character more than the Nikon. Exposure is slightly more consistent from Sony and White balance (was in a church with Red heat lamps and red carpet!) seems easier to correct (LR Auto WB gets it spot on whereas with the Nikon I have to use the eye dropper on almost every shot) I'm going on too long - video coming soon...

Wow Allen, thanks for taking the time to explain in such detail. I’ll have to go back to a past vid when you reverted from Sony back to Nikon. Just wondering if the Sony f1.4’s weren’t available in those days. The main thing that has put me off Sony all these years is the confusing menu system that a lot of critics talk about but I guess if you can program all you want to custom buttons then life could be good! I also love aperture rings. I wish the Z lenses had them like they had them in the old days. Apparently the Nikon Zf has even faster eye AF than the Z8 and works well with Voightlander Z MF lenses (with aperture rings) which would be ideal for me as I don’t shoot portraits. I hope Nikon comes out with a Zf 45 mpx version but I doubt it. I haven’t experienced Sony but I do love the Nikon colours. It’s maybe just a personal preference but I have to say the Z7 colours from a November fireworks display had me shouting, “Wow” to my iMac and brought a real smile to my face. Maybe I should take a tip from you and at least hire a Sony for a few days. All the very best, Christian.

Nikon have FANTASTIC S Lenses for weddings ..you dont put Sony Lenses on a Nikon Jeez . You need a 351.8 S , 50. f1.8n are better than other brands f1.4 Because of the Z Mount advantage >> Read up before you sell your better Nikon Equipment >>

It's a personal view of course but none of the Z mount lenses have the same character as the old F mount primes. I especially found the 35 1.8s just so boring. The 50 1.8s was sharp but I have now got all my new Sony gear and the 50 1.4GM lens has at least as good sharpness AND character imo. Not knocking Nikon which I've used since I started weddings in 2013 but their switch to mirrorless has been a train wreck. The Z6ii was almost unusable in anything but good light and I'd switch to the d780 for evenings at weddings. I'll do an update video after a couple more weddings on how I find the Sony gear

Very Interesting, to hear a true professional's judgement on where Nikon Z went unfortunately. I suspect, Nikon is losing pros (like you), and is becoming the new Pentax for the mirrorless era: focusing on what hobbyists / enthusiasts are after, such as - 1.8 lenses (or the 1.2 lenses for the "more money than talent" fraction among the enthusiasts segment). - these nostalgic retro cameras. - (like the Z8) focusing on nerdy camera specs, rather than on what is really useful in the field for serious wedding pros (like yourself), e.g. regarding autofocus setup and control. Subscribed.

Thank you for that - to be honest I almost took this video down as some of the comments have been like I'm making a personal attack on anyone with a Nikon. I still have a D700 and D780 and will keep them for personal projects (and sometimes I just need a Dslr!) I've just done a wedding with the Sony A9ii and A7iv with the 35 F1.4Gm lens - (and the D780 and a couple of other lenses) Editiing the photos now and Wow! The Sony Gm lens is so much better than the Nikon 50 1,8S lens (the best of the Z mount lenses I had) - the Af of Z8 and the Sonys is pretty much equal but I'd say the Sonys are actually more straightforward. Oh and the A9ii - 980 shots and 45% battery left! The Z8 dies after about 550. Rest of my Sony lenses coming in 2 days and I'll be doing another video about how I find the whole moving to Sony thing soon.

Lol I have also bought a first Sony camers two days ago 😂 Because I wsnted to try it out. I never hold any Sony camera in my hands. If Sony would be as reliable as Nikon it will be good 👌 In other cases Sony wins really pretty much at everything 😢
