    Useing tape, what star you are. As a decorator I leaned to sigh writting at college. No one mentioned tape. I've written the odd shop front my boats names, bits and pieces. As an apprentice I considered becoming a sign writtier. Vans had written signs then. Unfortunately I had a motor bike, just discovered girls ect. I could have practiced at home and added a skill, but you can't do everything. I'm going to start writting some signs. Eg beer garden for my garden. This way up a sign for my boat. Excellent video. Loved the professional presentation. Stay safe 🙏 thanks

    Generally if you're signwriting as a business as I once was, you would have 4 styles, one would be a block, I used Helvetika, a condensed style, I used Grotesque, and a script and last but not least, one struck free style. Depending on the letters involved, I would generally use their letter heading for inspiration but the main blah blah laborious writing I'd always try to get away with one stroke.

    Nice. I've barely started my signwriting journey, and it's definitely not a quick and easy thing to pick up, especially if you inherited naturally shaky hands, but I'm gonna get it right!

    Hi Gary, I've been a bit slow updating my channel. I really must make a point of "Lesson 2" - work at Mustang Sally Garage has picked up and we've been ever so busy (you can check out our projects on facebook) HOWEVER, if you have any questions that none of our videos answer please feel free to drop me a message and I will see if I can help you out!

    It is simple when you know how to do it. But doing this first video back to basics it did bring back nightmares. I spent 3 years practicing in between painting boards and rollering facias etc. You won't get it first time, it's down to practice and getting your hand to do what your mind wants it to do. I do reinforce in my video that it is practice that perfects your art. Unfortunately it is one of these trades where the better you get, the easier it looks for outsiders. It is not a quick thing to learn and there is no nice results first time. But, I hope my videos can bring back some of my earlier apprentice days and perhaps teach people wanting to learn this forgotten trade.

    any advice on buying paint for the beginner? the half pint one-shot is better value than the smaller tins but are they practical for someone who would take a couple of years to use that much of one colour?

  • @Airbrushartist

    Hi John, if you are only practicing you can use any synthetic paint. A good covering one may be a satin black - dries quicker and covers well. One shot is expensive just to practice with but the difference with the signwriting paints is two things: 1 adhesion is better because you're not sanding the vehicle before you letter and also the pigment is much stronger so when you reduce the paint it still has the ability to cover without going on so thick.

    You colored the back of your paper. What pencils do you use to color it, and to outline it once the paper is in place?

  • @Airbrushartist

    @Airbrushartist

    Hi LowGMCSierra, I rubbed it with a graphite pencil, you can use charcoal, any coloured chalk that would show up on the surface you are working on. And then to trace it through you can use either a pencil or a ball point pen; just to apply the pressure to leave the impression. You don't need a lot, just normal handwritting pressure. If it is new paintwork then very light pressure. If you colour the back of the paper in chalk - then do wipe excess off with cotton wool or cloth (you can see me do that in other videos) and that way you won't have too much chalk on your surface.

    Ian Plumb, the video is "BACK TO BASICS" ie: a teaching video for people that have NEVER done signwriting before. So, yes as an apprentice we did mark our lettering out freehand. I don't know any other way to do it, that is how I was taught. There is no other way to do it. If I was signwriting a box lorry and I had 20 words running down that lorry you would have to rough it out otherwise how would you know where to start and finish and where to centralize. Perhaps you can teach me something? How do you set wording out on a vehicle.
