I remember seeing one in southern Angola late 1980's , I was only 6 I think, but forever ingrained a vivid impression in me. Nice video, thank you.

And where in the 70"s and 80's regarded as of the best soldiers in the world regarding guerilla warfare. Casualties in Angola wher 40 enemy dead to 1 sadf soldier. Pity sanctions from major first world countries economically and the politics forced us to the negotiating table.

Looks like it was abandoned. Lack of fuel, spare parts or personal from the looks of it. It seems to be in way to much of a good condition to have been shot down.

It doesn't surprise me. You will probably find other Soviet era aircraft throughout the region in the same state. The African governments not maintaining them and not knowing how to maintain them just after a few years of use.

Soviets and Cubans supplied the Angolan with a hell ton of equipment. Ak47s, RPGs, a couple T34/85s alongside some T54/T55 tanks, alongside a bunch of jets and helicopters. At one point they even had a SAM-9, which had been supplied by the Russians. The thing was a thorn in the side for the SAAF until some Commandos managed to reportedly steal it, though how true this is is up for debate (a vet told me, the files on this may still be classifiedd
