"Steve Phil2010" Agreed! It helps CONSIDERABLY that there's only three minutes of ads in a 30-minute sitcom, circa 1960 -- instead of the NERVE-WRACKING, CONTINUITY-DESTROYING nine (9 !) in most contemporary, half-hour shows. Love that John Williams end theme; bouncy and lively! . . . And I very much appreciate the friendly manner of John Forsythe pitching aspirin (Anacin) from his living room chair! The way he closes with saying, "Good Night," is like he's continuing speaking directly to the audience -- and inviting them back for next week's show.

Ah, television the way it USED TO BE. Thanks for presenting BF episode, Bentley's Birthday Gift, from June 9, 1960 on NBC-TV. Later that year, BF would move to rival ABC to complete its five-year run. The original commercials are a big plus, here. Love the old-style way of delivering the sales pitch.

The spokesperson for Tareyton Cigarettes in the advertisements was Bill Malone, who was also a Play-by-play voice of the NFL's Washington Redskins and would (from 1965-67) become host of the ABC Daytime game show "Supermarket Sweep" (11:00 a.m. EST)

I believe that Bachelor Father was one of a trio of TV programs that alternated with Jack Benny on Sunday nights in the 1950s .Along with Miss Ann Sothern and George Gobel/ Eddie Fisher .

Yes, JOHN WILLIAMS {when he was known as "Johnny"} wrote the theme (and most of the scores) for season three.

This ran during the show's first NBC season, 1959-60..."Bachelor Father" ran on all three networks over five consecutive seasons (1957-59 CBS, 1959-61 NBC, 1961-62 ABC).

I love this show. I just started watching it about 5 years ago when Antenna TV played it. Now I watch it on KZread. It just makes you happy. The tone is upbeat and cozy. It's sad that the actor playing Peter died about two years after the show went off the air. Hollywood can be a tough place to try to maintain a career in.

From 1959 through '61, the series appeared on NBC [Thursdays, 9pm(et)]. Originally telecast on June 9, 1960 (last first-run episode of the season) ; this season's opening title does NOT appear in syndicated or cable repeats.

Like the Cleavers...Bentley, Kelly and Peter got a new house when MCA acquired the physical property of Universal City in 1959 and relocated all its productions from the Republic Studios lot (now known as CBS Radford)

This show and Family Affair of the late 1960s are similar but I like the Forsythe / Tong bachelor duo more than the rugged Keith / pompous Cabot duo . The niece in BF is more hip than the syrupy FA kids

I still take Anacin for headaches, like Bentley Gregg suggested near the end here....but my headaches surely don't come from cigarettes. I don't touch the stuff. Anacin sure isn't ubiquitous on television today.

In 2021, as shocking as it sounds, 46% of adult Americans smoked cigarettes. Tobacco companies' ads -- and their respective catchy jingles -- flooded the airwaves. Who would imagine "The Flintstone," the hit, ANIMATED, family show, would be sponsored by Winston?!

  • @stuartfanning

Yes the opening on Season One was animated, not live action. Sponsor for Season One was just the American Tobacco Company and their Tareyton brand. In later seasons Whitehall Laboratories (American Home Products Corp.) and their Anacin brand became co-sponsors.

It's interesting what a paper thin premise this episode was, and how bad the acting is, as if it's more of a stage play. The neighbor character behaves terribly, and yet all is forgiven, the lovable rogue! I grew up watching this and other comedies...no wonder Dick Van Dyke and Andy Griffith stick out like sore thumbs in comparison!
