This is such a fresh approach to Bach! Hammer-on/pull-off playing kinda has accents built in, and those accents are totally different from how people would articulate it conventionally, and gives it a modern, syncopated character. I love it!

Love Bach. Loved your recording. Love the Partitas. I have a recording of violinist Hillary Hahn doing them and it’s one of my most listened to albums. When I was working on classical guitar, Bach was my favorite music to play. I was just starting on the d minor Chaconne when I had to quit.

Wow, that was awesome. Have you ever tried improvising in the baroque style? Ted Greene is the only person I've heard do it authentically on guitar, although I'm sure there are others. I know you could because your ears and knowledge of theory are so advanced. Beautiful playing, cheers.

@@wtumadremtupadre Thanks, I looked up partimento I'm enjoying it. But Ted Greene would improvise endlessly and didn't have any sketches in front of him to go off, just an amazing ear and lots and lots of practice and playing. He would even improvise in a baroque style using jazz standards. There's a popular video of him doing so with Autumn Leaves at a clinic at a music school.

I understand, you can always try learning it from the score in segments - for example, just 4 bars at a time. Or if you find guitar tab to be helpful, I have a transcription here: beneunson.com/products/violin-partita-no-1-in-b-minor-bwv-1002-viii-double 😀 Hope that helps, and thanks again for watching!

Interesting use of slurs in the piece. Though it differs significantly from the Bach Violin Urtext Manuscript, it worked quite well on the guitar, and gave the Double a rather Jazzy feel. I'm curious about your choice to do that.

Thanks so much for listening! Yes you're quite right - I took some liberties with the articulation to accomodate a slightly more modern, legato approach on electric guitar.

But can you play the same piece playing the chords and harmony like Segovia?
@beneunson
13 күн бұрын
Thanks for listening! Segovia's performance of this piece is stunning, but I prefer the predominantly single-line nature of Bach's violin score. Maybe one day I'll learn Segovia's version 😀

That was too fast. You could and did pull it off, but at a cost. A listener hears it for the first time and it's simply hard to absorb all those lines at this tempo. Besides, if you slowed down some, you'd be able to sink deeper into the music, so to speak. However, you are truly impressive!

I'm not actually up to scratch on my Bach scholarship, I do know that conventionally classical musicians tend to not heavily phrase rhythm-wise and rubato-wise Bach; there's enough musical texture, variation, harmony and melody in the lines themselves that adding the extra interpretative dimension can often distract from that. It's just a taste thing of course as to whether you like listening to this, music is subjective after all :D It's a good exercise to play both Bach like this, and also with more heavy phrasing and rubato - there's really an excess of options if you choose to do it with rubato! On Ben's performance, like other commenters have noted, the phrasing that Ben uses through legato fingerings is really interesting (since Bach isn't often played this way), and that's quite visible through a less Rubato interpretation. Personally for me playing these sorts of legato lines at a faster/steady tempo give this "waterfall of sound" effect :D
