I have almost lost count of the number references there are in this fugue to the B-A-C-H motif. The notes are often subtly woven into the music - sometimes forwards, sometimes backwards, sometimes transposed, sometimes together but often consistently spaced out (i.e. with the notes placed on similar consecutive parts of a beat or bar). They can't all be happy accidents! The levels that Bach's mind worked on is utterly mind-boggling!

@@ianletbey Okay, jokes aside...one of the more prominent examples is at bar 26, soprano (where Bach inverts a figure from the counter subject) - there is a very clear B flat A on the second half of beat one followed by a C B natural on the second half of beat two (the sequence actually also continues into the second half of beat 3 with D C sharp...) Take a look at bars 36-7 and you will see something similar going on, but this time in all three parts (allowing for transposition of the B-A-C-H motif). Coincidence? Maybe. Deliberate? A distinct possibility!

I just noticed YOUR THE GUY WHO PLAYS KEYBOARD WITH ELEPHANTS. Next step: make a keyboard Peter can actually play with his trunk.....include very low octaves with enhanced bass??? There is a research group doing this with dolphins, monkeys, whales. They want to open up the internet to all capable animals. I once "bumped into a CA grey whale" while snorkeling and we hung out together for 20 minutes.....it really affected me for a year. Hoping for a "Peter composition". Ross

@@richardlyman2961 What is the TET ? is it meantone temperament ? I think Bach used this one for the specific 24 colors (12 colors actually because it was tempered making C♯ and D♭ undistinguishable on a keyboard instrument), at least we know Bach didn't use the well temperament and it wasn't democratized at his time. Actually musicians had to wait until 1917 to have a total well temperament.

Personally I'd start this piece with 3rd finger instead of 5th on the left hand (the D on the beginning). It is stronger finger and gives you more control in the opening. I think my music sheet also had mark for the 3rd finger there, not sure...

    m. 29 in the fugue - isn’t that a turn, not a trill? Also, I’d like to know some tips for improving the prelude? I am struggling with keeping the RH even in between the tricky hand position changes and I always slip or have one or two rushed notes in between. This is a great interpretation though. I love your style.

Hi Paul, very nice rendition, thanks for all the music, I love your videos. I'm curious if you have an opinion about the sixteenth note at the beginning? I feel like you play it here as a detached triplet (please correct me if I'm wrong), though I notice with some other performances the music feels like it's speeding up on beat 2. Just curious about your learned opinion. Have a good day!

Hello, I have been playing piano for about 12 years and I really enjoy the romantic era of music but I've been told to do some of the more baroque pieces, which I don't enjoy playing as much, as they seem almost too straight forward to me. What pieces would you suggest for me to play? (For reference, my last pieces were Chopin's Fantasie Impromptu and Debussy's Arabesque No.1) It'd be great if anyone could help me out. Thank you in advance!

Ali. B. Many pieces from the well tempered clavichord should suit your needs, despite how they look on paper, they are quite difficult to play. Though thhis is a reideration of what has been already stated, Bach is absolutly necessary. There are some easy pieces i still play by Bach just as warmups even to get my brain started. After all, Bach is the foundation of music. Again, any piece from well tempered clavichord would work well, especially the fugues. My favorite is prelude and fugue number two, but it is very difficult, especially the fugue.

Ali. B. I understand this haha it takes a while to get into baroque, I used to only like chopin and rach etc, but Bach is now my favourite composer. I've been playing for about 9 years. Pieces I'd suggest are the preludes from wtc, as they tend to be a little more easy and accessible than the fugues, although none of the wtc is easy (nothing easier than grade 8, can be up to LRSM diploma difficulty - look at the c sharp major set!) For some lighter bach look into the inventions and sinfonias, these are rarely too hard. I like the inventions in f major and a major, and the sinfonia in b minor (which is a grade 7)
