Bach - Cantata Jesu, der du meine Seele BWV 78 - Van Veldhoven | Netherlands Bach Society
Музыка
The opening chorus of this cantata 'Jesu, der du meine Seele', performed here by the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach, resembles a chaconne. You can hear a number of layers in the music: strings and winds, a chorale melody; multiple voices that all make their own contribution at the same time - a sampling of fantastic ensembles. As a contrast the arias are sung by one or two singers, with an accompanying instrument.
Recorded for the project All of Bach on February 10th 2018 at the Walloon Church, Amsterdam. If you want to help us complete All of Bach, please subscribe to our channel bit.ly/2vhCeFB and consider donating bit.ly/2uZuMj5.

No group does Bach as beautifully as the Netherlands Bach Society. Every one of your performances is thrilling.. Many thanks from a very delighted Amerian listener.
I carried my fathers ashes into church for his funeral accompanied by this music. It was the music that kept me going.
Wunderbar!! Der Tenor ist einfach entzückend und der Bass großartig. Auch Sopran und Alt gefallen mir sehr gut. Hinreißend deren Duett.
I first heard this cantata when I was taking an introduction to music course and had to write a paper on it. I sat in our music library for hours listening to it over and over again. I had never heard anything as exquisite as the second movement, the duet.

To think that, for a few years, Bach had to write something like this every week! The duet "Wir eilen" is absolutely gorgeous. I am obsessed with this KZread channel.

actually Johann von Rist wrote the chorale for the piece, at the age of 17.
Hard to believe that he composed this on a Monday and Tuesday, got his family to write it out, rehearsed it on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday and then they performed it on Sunday. Then started a new one on Monday and repeat over 200! He da Man! 😎 This performance is amazing! 😍
@herrickinman9303

Hard to believe because it could not have happened the way you describe. It takes a college choir 4-8 weeks to rehearse one Bach cantata. Surely Bach did NOT perform a new cantata every Sunday. He had administrative duties and private lessons to give. He didn't just sit around composing new cantatas. He could not depend on the poor resources of the Thomas-Schule and town musicians. Like his predecessor Johann Kuhnau, Bach depended on talented students from the university to perform his cantatas and even offered them free music lessons in exchange for their participation in the performances.

@@herrickinman9303 There were very few rehearsals. The performances were probably not as perfect as those we are used to in our day and age; on the other hand musicians were trained differently precisely for that purpose. In many instances we know when Bach got the libretto from the poet, when it was approved by the ecclesiastical authorities, and when the cantata was finally played. So this is not a matter of 'it could not have happened', it's more a matter of 'how could it have happened the way it has'. During the first two years in Leipzig, Bach produced 100 cantatas. Hard to imagine how he could have dedicated 4 weeks to each of them! The rehearsals took place on saturday, one day before the religious service.

What an amazing cantata ! So full of life... and wonderfully performed! Definitely one of my very favorites.

Absolutlely love the duet. Also the bas in the background is clearly enjoying it!
When Daniel sings "to battle" he looks like he's absolutely going to scratch your eyes out

Absolutely beautiful singing and playing. I can't understand why 8 people would say they didn't like it. As a former Counter-Tenor, I must congratulate Mr. Mead on his beautiful voice. All the soloists were tremendous as was the chorus. And finally, lovely conducting by Mr. van Veddhoven. Very clear and precise. All in all, a wonderful performance. Thank you!

With you entirely. Sometimes it’s all to do and speak frankly of the power Bach wielded. E.g. 3’20” to 4’00”. The use of the chromatic line. Still shakes my centre after twenty years of listening to BWV78.

When you hear all of the Bach cantatas you will even be more surprised. For example cantata 'Allein zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ' (BWV 33), especially the duet "Gott, der du die Liebe heißt", but the whole cantata is wonderful.

@@jamallabarge2665 Surely, the entire cantata is not a lament. The 1st movement is a passacaglia, whose theme is the traditional lament motive: the chromatically descending tetrachord. The theme occurs descending, ascending, and in various keys.

This piece is a religious dance (primarily), severe and cheerful together. Outstanding performance.

Good to see Daniel in such fine action! I was in Salzburg several years ago and was delighted to find a Bach concert on. Thanks so much for posting this glorious rendition of this glorious work.
Cantata BWV 78 has been one of my favorites for over 4 decades. The juxtaposition, in moods, of the first 2 movements...wow. This performance is stunning. Although the "old wig" took criticism from Church authorities, and was supposedly only lukewarmly appreciated by the congregation, what did his vocalists and instrumentalists think? Firstly, fear, at the technical difficulties, I'm sure...does the flautist, singer, oboist really need to breathe? Naaaah. But later, while dining with friends, or approaching sleep, what must have been in their minds? The sheer genius, brilliance, uniqueness of the writing must have overwhelmed them, yes? They must have known that they were connected to someone/something truly extraordinary. His recitative writing alone...his diminished triad and 7th chord modulations...amazing, and emotion laden...no one did it better. // This whole production is great...I loved the out of focus, to perfectly in focus camera work in, 'Dein Blut', as the tenor swelled from piano to forte. Again, please keep posting.
