Bach - Cantata Gottes Zeit..., 'Actus Tragicus' BWV 106 - Van Veldhoven | Netherlands Bach Society

In 'Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit', performed by the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach, the combination of instruments Bach uses can be described in many ways - famous, idiosyncratic, exceptionally beautiful and meaningful. In any case, the instrumentation is an unusual one. The violins are conspicuous by their absence, but there are two recorders and two viola da gambas, which provide a soft, comforting and sometimes almost heavenly sound.
Recorded for the project All of Bach on May 16th 2015 at the Oostkerk, Middelburg. If you want to help us complete All of Bach, please subscribe to our channel bit.ly/2vhCeFB or consider donating bit.ly/2uZuMj5.
The English subtitling for this cantata was sponsored by the American Bach Society. The translation was made by Daniel R. Melamed and Michael Marissen. For an annotated version of the text and translation, see bachcantatatexts.org/BWV106.htm.

@@ru99414, Bach mostly uses the Viol or in Italian Viola da Gamba if he talks about death. For that he needed a comforting and counseling sound and the Viola/Violoncello da Spalla wasn't really capable of achieving this sound. The movements of Bach including a Solo or ad libitum Viol are among the most touching and saddest movements ever written by Bach.

@@Musicienne-DAB1995, completely understandable. I was discussing this with my counseling professor and she was really interested in this Cantata. So I wrote a small article on it with regard to the counseling effect of it. My result was that through the intimacy of the music Bach is embracing and comforting the listener. Although embraces are highly debated in the area of counseling this is the kind of embrace that is appropriate. It is a psychological embrace and not a physical one.

Without any doubt one of the most beautifull and mooving cantata of Bach. Very original instrumentarium used by Bach with the two recorders and viola da gamba. Also a great presence of the choir. The presence of the recorders assumes that the subject of this masterpiece is related to death... It is interesting to notice that, at the begining of barock era, Monteverdi used recorder for the pieces related to joy and Bach for the death. Bach will be the last great composer to use this amazing instrument before its renewal 200 years later. Writing some comments on the beautiful perfomance of Netherlands Bach Society: amazing because of the slow tempo which let the listener to hear the beauty of the voices and the great inspiration of this music.

Very beautiful and moving. Years ago I read a newspaper piece by John Eliot Gardiner in which he remarked on the aesthetic power and spiritual consolation of Actus Tragicus in the face of death. I've never forgotten his words on the eerie silence that follows the trailing away of the orchestra and the soprano's voice as she asks Jesus to come, just before 11.50, into which silence He then steps forth, or so we may imagine. It is, said Gardiner, one of the most haunting moments in all music. I agree with him.

Echt bewundernswert!

This cantata shows the versatility of Bach. In this case the absence of violins for example. Although the musical sensitivity and sublime melody only a genius like Bach could composed it. The voices are amazing. The orchestration is flawless.Viva Bach !!!!

Bravo!

GLORIOUS CANTATA. The slow tempo allows an appreciation of the solo singers and the delicious musical tone of the recorders and the two violas de gambas. Conductor Jos van Veldhoven conducts in well-phrased tempo with pleasant fluency. Cantata Gottes Zeist is a paragon of harmony and serenity. Exceptional recording.

I am here after reading the biographical notes about Bach's early life. Apparently a very independent soul, Bach had difficulties with his assigned students and with church leadership in his home town of Arnstadt. His new position of organist at the Church of St. Blaise in Mühlhausen did not turn out as he'd hoped. Bach's musical style (complex arrangements that wove together different melodic lines) clashed with the church's pastor's preference. (He believed church music should be simple.) This music is from that time.
