    First of all, the reason I went to this festival was on the recommendation of Metallica, who saw Baby Metal on stage at Summersonic 2013. The original plan was not to be the main event, but a tent stage with a few thousand people. However, when it was announced that Baby Metal was going to perform, the official festival FB went up in flames. The comment section was flooded with unspoken slander and bashing, with some even calling for people to throw plastic bottles of urine into the air. Seeing the magnitude of the response, the festival suddenly changed the venue to the main stage. For a band with little or no experience overseas at the time, they were faced with an unbelievable ordeal: being thrown out in front of 60,000 metallers on their debut. The producer looks back on that time, "It was a bit of a gamble", and there's also an episode that the local promoters encouraged them to perform at the festival, saying "We'll make it, we'll make it, we can bet on it". And on the day of the concert, when it was time for Babymetal, the main stage was filled with a huge crowd (about 60,000 people) as the promoter had expected, but most of them were said to be curious or anti-haters. The producer later said that it was the first time in his life that he had been shocked. Finally, the live performance starts. At first the audience didn't know what to expect, but as the show went on, they got more excited, and after "Megitsune", the audience started to chorus for encore. The last song was "Ijime, Dame, Zettai", BABYMETAL's major label debut single and an anthem for Babymetal at that time. Babymetal gave their best performance in this first run, and the live was closed with great applause. In a later report, they went so far as to say "the biggest achievement of this year is that we invited Babymetal". I think the three of them, who were 15 or 16 years old at the time, were scared, and I think they were prepared for it. They really did a good job. This concert, which sparked the overseas expansion of the band, was called "Sonisphere's Miracle" by fans, and it was a major turning point for Babymetal.

    I wasn't even there, but I became a fan because of their Sonisphere concert in 2014 - around that time, whenever I heard an interesting band, I looked up "full concert" or live videos on KZread, and this is what was available for Babymetal. A fan-cam compilation from Sonisphere. I watched it at least once every night for 2-3 weeks since I first saw it. I had seen their music videos before but in this video, instead of dancers, there was a live band which is a big deal for me. I first saw Babymetal live at Wembley in 2016. To date, I have seen them live 10 times (five of them in Japan; two nights in a row at Tokyo Dome, Saitama Super Arena and Utrecht), the latest being the first time they played in my home country Finland at the end of February 2020. I am extremely glad the concert could happen just before the pandemic hit, and I can't wait for the next time.

    Su metal interview on sonisphere : The performance at the UK Sonisphere Festival is often seen as the moment BABYMETAL made themselves known to the world. What did she think about this appearance at such a huge festival featuring so many big names? Su: The Sonisphere experience is probably a big reason for why I enjoy performing abroad so much. To be honest, all I knew beforehand about Sonisphere was that it was a metal festival; I had no idea how big it was. So we started off looking at the stage from the wings and remarking in surprise, “It’s so big!” We wondered if there was an audience, and peeked out from the side - but there was a blind spot, so we couldn’t see the audience at all. From where we were, all we could see was the field. “No one came” we said to each other. But we figured there must be at least 10 diehard fans who’d traveled from Japan to see us, so we resolved to do our best anyway and put on a great show for these loyal fans. Then we stepped onto the stage, and were totally blindsided by how many people there were (laughs)! We had been ready to do our best without backing down even if there wasn’t a crowd, so when we got up there, it was a joy to see so many people waiting for us.

    It’s a funny episode that’s quite fitting for BABYMETAL, but perhaps it was this magnanimity that has helped them dominate huge stages all over the world. Su: When I actually stood on the stage, I realized that there were a lot of people that were uninterested, or even hostile towards us. That’s the kind of atmosphere it felt like at first. But as we performed, I felt that we were able to communicate through music, not words, and I felt, “So this is the power of BABYMETAL’s music!” The audience responded so honestly, and as they warmed up to us it felt like a wave of expanding music growing before my eyes. That experience has stayed with me even after all these years. Whatever unfamiliar place we take on next, I have no doubt we can succeed, because of our achievement at Sonisphere.

    This is my first time watching this breakout performance, and I'm a huge fan that's seen them 3 times now As a musician, I can't even image the nerves and bravery they all put on to go in front of a crowd of like 65000 as both relative unknowns, and with teenage girls doing choreography while singing. You can see it in the Kami Band for the entire first 5 minutes, but seeing them loosen up and realize the crowd is having a crowd is just amazing. The girls were already consummate professionals as middle schoolers, and this set should be watched at the Berklee Music Schools of the world. Absolute masterclasses from everybody involved.

    Most of our beloved metal heroes were picking boogers at age 15 like the rest of us. This was 2014, the day that BM took the metal world by storm, and they were 14 and 15 years old. Paraphrasing a favorite comment of mine by ThrottleVinnieModo in the Karate download video "How many barriers are they breaking in this genre? Culture, language, race, gender, age" I will add that even inside their own culture they broke many barriers, and now they’ve also broken the time barrier, one some thought they'd never cross. 10 years. Part of how important this is, not only for music in general, but what it means to normalize other cultures and cultures art forms in our day to day lives; and how much this teaches us that it doesn’t matter where we are from. We like that it reaches us directly to our center. In the metal world what Rammstein did way before, and some people forgot, or choose to forget, is that we will sing in our own language and our songs are so good that you will love them. Come on, this video is a fan cam compilation, just look at Su's face, she looks like she wants to take over the world by herself. We all know how it is, even having regular speech at work, no matter how confident we are, or years of experience, we can feel the panic in the air, but here they are not even thinking. They move like they are in the Olympics, not because of the difficulty but because they rehearsed and trained so hard, for so long…now they can fly, and they enjoy it. Maybe because while growing up in the business, they somehow learned how to enjoy it like nobody could in the past, maybe because a good management team finally knew how to protect them, and they learned from past failures. We all see child prodigies, no matter where we are from that never got that chance, that was 8 years ago. There is a small bit, not on this video, but on one other video with a back camera shot of Su raising her hand against a tsunami of people in slow motion, that always strikes me like, “how would that feel being that young in a position like that.” When I was 15 being and being chased by my teachers because I was smoking on the toilet with my gf, was already a rush! At 16 I was trying several different things, none of them, would even come close to this experience. I mean after all these years most, of us will never know how this concert felt in 2014. Now Su commands the stage like Madonna or MJ. We are lucky they continue to be humble, and normal in a way that not even regular idols in japan are, forget about other celebrities in the rest of the world, another barrier broke after this success. This video is from 2014, they are fucking Galactus now. Kitsune up.

    Right before they went out on stage, the girls were worried, "What if none of the audience showed up?" What if no one shows up? I can't imagine what the girls must have thought when they saw the line of people stretching to the horizon. And the staff would have gone to great lengths to leave the three of them alone! And so the legend was born.

    Holy Cow! WTF. I already knew all of these songs at sonisphere as single video performances but seeing and enjoying the whole show just blew me away. That energy, showmanship and musicianship. I feel so much respect for them. I am usually not the one going to a festival and I wished I were there to celebarate the moment when BABYMETAL entered the world stage outside of Japan.

    So I'm watching this for the third time today and having never seen it before, the Kami Band being so nervous and realizing the crowd is eating it up, it's amazing. You can hear and see at the start that they're really unsure how it's going to go over, but this crowd deserves the highest praise for just taking it in. They've brought so much fun and happiness to the world, and this set probably did so much to ensure that they kept at it. EDIT - I've got to add that their genuine reactions to the crowd just embracing them with open arms and rocking the fuck out, it brings a tear to this old man's eye. I can't even imagine being 14, 15, and in another country, and being told "ok, so you're going out to play for 65,000 people that don't know you and might absolutely hate what we're doing, but do what we practiced and hope for the best." And then seeing the crowd just go insane for it, what legends they all are.

    very smart to start with a long musical opener; if there were people in the crowd who'd be put off by the name or the girls they can't complain about the music and it's definitely a great first impression.

    Holy S**t, I just discovered this recording recently. This is so much nicer than the edited versions. Like Ijime Dame Zettai sounds so damn sincere with hearing Su-Metal how she really sings. Some notes are not perfect, and it puts the soul right into the song. So much feelings...

  • @Hiroyuki.N

    @Hiroyuki.N

    She can sing better than that. And the last song has almost no choreography. She should have more room to sing. But she sacrificed that room and sang with all her might. I think that's why it touched the hearts of so many people, regardless of language.
