Lets be honest, here. THIS is the album review everybody has been waiting for. After CKN reacted to this band last year, most have wondered what the reaction would be to the entire album. Well, CKN listened to it, and its time for the review. Did Babymetal captivate or disappoint? Did Babymetal make CKN dance like a moron again? How many times can we say "baby" or "metal" in this review? Lets find out!

Vanja Maximum the Hormone doesn't sound like Babymetal. You've got the point about borrowing elements from metal and j-pop, but it's hardcore punk that's their ground zero. Source? I've been a huge fan of MtH for 6 years ;]

Japan is home to a number of Quality Metal Bands (X Japan, Versailles, Light Bringer, etc) but for some reason no one talks about them in the Metal Community. People usually look to Europe for Metal but Japan has a lot of unique things to offer.

jazzmaster909 LOL when someone mentions Japanese Metal bands, it's almost always the Visual Kei, "J-Metal", or Power metal bands SMH ... but I agree with your main point. I love the more "extreme" Japanese bands. Sigh, Fastkill, Church of Misery, Noism, Infernal Revulsion, Coffins (and alot more) are fantastic!

I listen mostly thrash & death metal, and i can say that this is not bad album at all. It is really weird at first, but in a cool kinda guilty pleasure way. It has grown on me, and i'm proud to call myself a babymetal fan. Yeah it's a little silly album, but that's the whole charm of it.

Babymetal for me was interesting. I heard them early last year when they released Gimme Chocolate and it was being shared around. Watched the video while I was on the toilet and I had the same reaction as most people - WTF? in the summer/ fall I started listening more and I really got into it. Bought the album on iTunes, listened to it multiple times a day. Now I've gone to their concert in Toronto, bought the physical album, 3 t-shirts, and I've even taken a liking to Sakura Gakuin. I can't stop listening to the stuff. It's a weird thing to get sucked into but as you mentioned, it puts a smile on my face.

Pretty good review. One interesting piece of trivia, you all know that they were at the Download Festival right? You know that they weren't even invited but crashed it anyway just because? I kid you not. Andy Coppin, a promoter of the Download Festival, does NOT like them. He made sure not to invite them but they came and he was like "Hey, I just saw Babymetal hanging around backstage at Download?? What's going on?" Not too long later, they were on stage with Dragonforce. And who would dare try to kick someone off Dragonforce's stage what with the crowd cheering them on? And other bands trying to get a pic with them? Yeah, that was pretty much a big middle finger to him. "We weren't invited but were coming anyway". They may not be the metal that we grew up with but you gotta love that spirit. Novelty act? Hard to say. Look at their sister band "Perfume". Quite a few people thought their technopop style wouldn't work and now they're about 10 years or more into it? They started off about the same age as the girls of Babymetal did but now they're 25, 26 years old. Babymetal are onto their 5th year. There's a very good chance that could happen. Even if they fade out in the west, they would still be quite the item in Japan. It's totally cool if you don't like them too. But rather than wasting your time downtalking them for what doesn't meet the standards of what you or the people around you agree as to what metal is, it is better to just go and support your favorite bands instead. Why? Because they need you and every inch of your time rather than wasting it complaining about a band you don't like which won't have any effect on anything at all.

Maybe they'll have another album or two down the road and then they should re-issue their first album because by that time their voices will be fully grown and it would be cool to re record it.

Metal is knee-deep in depressing, growly, execrable bands, each vying with the others to appear more bloody, more angry and more like a vaguely musical version of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Does my head in. Why should we be expected to take Carcass's 'Necroticism - Descanting the Insalubrious' seriously because it appeals to white males aged 15-30 and we can't take Babymetal seriously because it appeals to a different demographic? What's wrong with girls? It's far more likely that you will connect with the lyrical content of a Babymetal album than with one concerned with the disposal of human remains (unless you are a fantasist or a serial killer). We can accept another song about exploded viscera but not one about being bullied (Ijime, Dame, Zettai)? Unless you are going to go with the "Yeah, but you're not supposed to take Carcass's lyrics seriously" argument and then I simply don't understand your position at all. Don't like the Fox God stuff? There's far more posturing and ridiculous pantomime in mainstream metal than there is in Babymetal. Don't like the idea of band put together by a label? Sure, they were 'put together' but then so was Led Zeppelin - Jimmy Page had a plan and a contract to fulfil and so he auditioned and recruited musicians. Kobametal had a plan and he recruited musicians. Blue Oyster Cult's early career owes a lot to their manager Sandy Pearlman. All bands are put together by someone and most have members that don't write songs - another accusation thrown at Babymetal. Babymetal might not write their own songs (yet) but neither did Elvis and it didn't hurt his record sales. The girls can sing and they are by all accounts absolutely professional in their work rate. If you don't like it then walk away. Which leads me to Run DMC's Walk This Way which is a classic but when Rick Rubin told them to work with Aerosmith everyone said he was mad. It works though. It opened up whole new soundscapes and there's no doubt that Rock/Metal has been strengthened by the increased diversity. In the world of musical Darwinism the artists with merit stand the test of time which is why we'll still be listening to Walk This Way in another 50 years and not listing to 99% of the bands on this list --> en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_grindcore_bands (the exception being maybe Napalm Death). Will we still be listening to Gimme Chocolate!? There's a very good chance. Plus I'm all done with the misogyny in Heavy Metal and the idea that -these- musicians can't be accepted because they are teenage girls and somehow dilute the purity of Metal. Teenage BOYS start bands all the time and get to be taken at face value but those started by teenage girls are not to be extended that privilege? As a 15yr old boy I lapped up Iron Maiden's Number of the Beast but as a 40-something parent with a daughter I find 22 Acacia Avenue unlistenable. Like all aspects of Humanity, you can't exclude, marginalise or abuse half the population and expect a healthy environment. Have a read of this --> www.invisibleoranges.com/2011/05/are-you-talking-to-me-respecting-women-in-metal/ Upbeat, furious fun. Bring me more please.

This to me goes the same way as Rock/Metal music in videogames. Some of the Metal purists out there don't give the music a chance if it's attached to a certain kind of entertainment. (Videogames, Anime, Etc) Because they love to think that if it isn't made by a real "Metal Band" then it isnt worth a damn, and it should be ridiculed.

A good discussion overall, although I disagree with what you said at the end about this being music of the moment. Really, that all depends on whether this group is managed properly. If they focus on crafting a second album that's on par with first in terms of quality, there is no reason why this group couldn't be a mainstay for many years to come. They have everything they need to reach the top: One, they have come up with something completely original, which, in any artistic medium, is damn difficult to do. Two, what they have come up with is very enjoyable and kicks ass on multiple levels. And three, they appeal to a very eclectic and widespread fanbase by the very nature of their music. As for you not understanding the hype, I myself get it. I like to compile a personal list of my favorite 10 albums in a given year. For 2014, I put BABYMETAL at number one - the main reason for this being that their album was a completely original breath of fresh air while also being good and highly listenable from both a metal and J-Pop perspective. Originality in my opinion should be the most heavily weighted factor on any gradation list of new music. And when you add in the fact that, though it is original, their album also has high listenability, great production elements, and is ultimately catchy as hell, the choice for me was easy. The fact that I listen to this shit all the time though is the telling factor. I really do think that this album is a kind of stroke of genius, and it’s heavy in my car music and gym music rotations. The argument that this group isn’t metal by the way is bullshit. The people that say that I’ve noticed are these rigid types that claim that metal is defined a certain way, which is total crap if you’ve been listening to metal for over three decades like I have - these arguments are akin to Christians arguing about what constitutes Christianity while constantly misquoting the bible and stating completely false facts about the history of their own religion. The point is that metal is comprised of a shitload of subgenres, and BABYMETAL is just offering yet another one. They are in fact metal, just a new and different take on it, and they meet the criteria in my mind for a metal band. I’ll be willing to argue that point with anyone. In conclusion, to top everything off, this group offers a very fun live show - one of the best I’ve seen in a while, and I’ve been to a great many punk, metal, rock, pop and other shows in my day. Their Fox God concept and the little “legends” that they do are a throwback to the glam and power metal bands of the 80’s like Motley Crue, and particularly like Iron Maiden with the whole continuing mythos of Eddie thing. Plus their live shows are just high energy and funner than fuck - which in my opinion is what you go to a live show for. Anyway, this band has the chops to become regulars in the metal scene. As long as their label and their management doesn’t fuck things up, I see them being around for a while. I for one am going to continue to go to their shows, and I don’t feel like they are a one trick pony at all - just the opposite in fact. I think they’re one of the most interesting things to happen in music in quite a while.

I will say this though: Road of Resistance is a beast of a song. I know it's mostly due to it being written by Dragonforce, but I really like the sound of Suzuka's voice on it, and if the girls went in this direction of music, I would buy the shit out of it. Everything else on the album is fun but nothing really great.

babymetal is the proof that corporated stuff can be good, if done right of course. you get an idea to sell: mix 2 things that you would never think they would go hand in hand like metal and cuteness jpop stuff, that could go very very wrong if they went for the "moderatto" crap which is the worst shitty band you could possibly imagine, its like black veil brides but instead of rock they sing pop..... and they get famous for making a song with belinda which is the mexican britney spears.... my point is they could have just played pop with electric guitars and call it metal to appeal to the young stupid audience, but instead they decided to do exactly what the idea was: blending 2 opposite genres

I get the impression that a lot of metal fans--particularly in the Anglosphere where novelty reigns supreme--want to defend Babymetal on the grounds of 'open mindedness', but it just makes you look stupid. If you want to be really open minded you are far better off getting into more daring forms of music in other genres rather than J-pop infused with watered down metal. I love how Americans/Brits/Aussies/Canadians are so much more receptive to junk from Asia and see it as being superior to their own junk. It's really just the same thing wrapped in different packaging.

I'm open to new sounds in metal but i hate how they've been groomed and metal is being commercialized by them, the sound is fun and what not but it stands for a lot of things metal is not, cool review since the music is different to listen to and that provides a cool experience, but there are some problems with them coming onto the metal scene, the corporate aspects common in pop really shouldn't be touching rock never mind metal. Also they don't even have much part in the production of the songs or contribute to the lyrics which are fairly stupid when translated, this makes them just seem false with their choreographed movements every show and cute appeal factor, i hate the fan base they're going to bring to metal, but w/e don't agree with this review fully but kudos for not being as negative as i am haha :)

Costel Cazan based on what ive read there's a bunch of different people forming the lyrics, some are those that play the instruments in babymetal and some are song writers, but if this is true then fair enough, its still a corporate scheme though to popularize metal and take it away from its roots.

It's not "their" stuff. I think that anyone that doesn't understand shit about how the Jpop idol industry works in Japan shouldn't be talking about this band like they know something. These are young girls that some big money business company decided to exploit their looks (not even gonna touch the issue with Japan's adoration for innocent girls), and to give them some kind of theme to differentiate them from the other thousands of idols, they put them in a metal band. None of their music is written by them, not even the lyrics. They're all handed by producers and real musicians. They only go out and look cute singing about stuff they don't know. Obviously, people's reaction about such juxtaposition would later become some kind of meme around our part of the world, since Japan gets all kind of different and weird stuff all the time, it's hard to impress them. Basically, you're all adoring the metal counterparts of big Pop craze-driven "artists" like Iggy Azalea or Nicki Minaj, which is funny because the metal community loves to shit on these "sellouts".

+Metalhead 3750 just because it's written by other people, doesn't make it bad or less real. They write the music FOR the members to play. If you think about it, the girls obviously aren't good enough to write music by themselves, but they trained hard all their fucking lives to be in idol groups so they're going to do it. The people who write it don't write it for themselves because it's not the kind of music they can do, it's the kind of music that the young girls do. If you're criticizing it for that, you're basically saying that the BABYMETAL girls have to write the music themselves when they obviously never learned how to, nor should it even matter. There's no problem with these girls being in the industry and playing and recording this music. Criticizing the system because they're hired by a company is pretty much a limitation on freedom of expression. Not to mention, people think that their voices are generic J-Pop vocals but think for a fucking minute- it's really only the sub-vocals that are, and it's because (you forget) it's a FUCKING MASHUP OF GENRES! THAT'S LITERALLY THEIR FUCKING CONCEPT! also, the lead singer, Suzuka, actually DOES sound quite a bit different than other J-pop vocalists. Her voice can adapt more to different styles, and she can even sing in the style of power metal or gothic metal vocalists. A lot of BABYMETAL songs are literally just really good metal songs with her signature voice in them (which is higher pitched than most metal vocalists but who fucking cares) Also, the manager made the members listen to shit-tons of metal so that they understood it. If they didn't, they wouldn't have much respect for the artists they meet, and the style of their dancing and even their singing would be hard to understand. Their manager is a huge metalhead so it would make sense that he knows shit about metal and makes sure they do, too. The girls didn't know about metal when they started in this band, but why is that a huge deal? Imo it's the best way to get introduced to metal music- just play in a manufactured metal band!

I've seen the most open minded people hating on this band. They are basically pop and use the same type of marketing. Stick some people at the front to be idolised and take away credit from the real musicians hidden away. They are a product not musicians. Also this is stupid. "Oooohhh they're so creative"... No they mixed two conflicting genres and found it sounded utter shit. Then used it anyway. Please can we bring attention back to the bands that are truly worth listening to?
