@@Mark73 Agreed, most series, especially Sci-Fi go through some serious 'teething pain' in their first season and some it might take two to find an audience. The first two seasons of ST TNG are very tough to watch, even now, DS9 (B5's rival) had a difficult first season. So, yeah B5's first season was tough to get through but after that....WOW!

(0:46) This is how you do holograms, ladies and gentlemen. None of this silliness where the holographic people know where to sit and are somehow perfectly in frame with the solid people in the room. Here, Londo points his finger "through" Refa and walks "through" Jakar. It actually makes what Londo is saying have more impact. Well done, Babylon 5. You were way ahead of your time. :)

@@tilasole3252 @Tila Sole I was talking more about impact of the scene, really. But it's a recording. A figure wouldn't "know" where to look and point relative to the projector. So, it's a good thing it was oriented correctly or Londo would have pointed at a wall or, even funnier, a lowly henchman who would flinch. I think that would have been pretty funny, but of course it wouldn't have worked with the feeling this heavy scene was trying to convey. I think at the time of this comment I was likely still steaming about Star Trek Discovery and the hologram communications where the person would sit on a physical piece of furniture in the room. Just silly. But what do you expect. It's STD. 😉 😜

It's actually why you _should_ stand in one place when you're dictating a holographic message. I mean, imagine if G'kar had been standing over by a wall and Londo had gotten projected onto it, kind of ruins the moment, no?

William Forward, the actor who played Refa, apparently went to JMS after reading the script and said "What have I done wrong that you're writing me out like this?" JMS proceeded to say that Refa had to go for Londo's arc to progress and it was precisely because Forward had done such a great job as Refa that he was getting a swansong episode instead of being written out off screen (Like General Hague for instance!). And he *did* do a great job portraying the Centauri Noble we all love to hate!

(because his character was dying in the next script) Yes, it was with the actor who plays Refa that I had that conversation. He was initially bummed out, figured I was doing what I was doing in "Rock" because I wasn't happy with his performance or something. So I pulled him aside and explained the situation, and indicated that we'd likely use him again as an alien character, under prosthetics. If he hadn't done such a good job, this wouldn't have happened, because no one would've cared about the character.

I always interpreted it as, while he approves of Refa's death, he is very UNsatisfied with the situation. Yes, Refa got his, but it does not undo what he did. Narn is still unfree. Killing Refa does not satisfy G'kar's rage. While he allows his people to vent their righteous anger at Refa, he nods in approval, and then walks off to go finish the work that still needs to be done. Andy me B5 wasn't as self-contained as you remember. Especially when you get into 3rd and 4th season, it is not really possible to follow the show without having seen earlier episodes. The idea of a TV show with a finite arc was new at the time. TV shows back then set up concepts and then each episode was one story within that concept. B5 was one of, if not the, first to really have a plot from beginning to end. We have it to thank for shows like 24, Lost, Game of Thrones...the stuff where the show knew where it started or where it was going (even if some of the stuff in between may vary).

Love Jurasik's performance in this scene particularly. If you can't notice, the minute he mentions Adira, his voice kinda cracks, but he immediately gathers himself and continues. The whole time, he's talking about his country, he's full-blown Punished Londo, pumped up and angry, but when he thinks about Adira, he seems to slightly get weary. Maybe it''s a sign he would have chosen Adira over Centauri Prime?

Steve Rogers ... but yet after, or because of, everything, Londo ended being pretty much shattered ... iirc, when he became Emperor, there was no grand parades, no spectacle, no celebration ... He simply entered the Palace, by himself, while a single bell tolled, ringing out the same number of times equal to those of his people whom died ... his coronation as Emperor was a pretty somber, and sober, affair ... Fortunately, he taught Vir the better side of his (Londo's) nature; so when Vir himself became Emperor, he would go down in Centauri history as the empathetic, compassionate, Emperor they needed to rebuild themselves ...

We see a near utopian future not because it's probably, but because it is possible, and we should strive for it. It can get a bit dull or dubious though. Conflict is what makes for a story, and seeing a society that has supposedly achieved utopia can only demonstrate conflict by utopia being threatened from without or questioned from within. This can undermine the idea that there is actually a utopia, but at its best, Star Trek shows hope of progress shining bright against all odds.

But yeah, when I saw it I imagined how spooky/creepy/scary the song must seem to the aliens in the room for whom it is all a foreign concept w/out any context. Its not a song about how some day you, the wrongdoer, will come to understand the error of your ways. Nor is it a song about how the profit you thought you were going to get w/your wrongdoing will end up being ashes in your mouth and you'll realize it too late. Nor is it even a song about what goes around comes around, nor he who lives by the sword dies by the sword, nor any of many another less creepy cliches. Rather its a song about how you will face cold merciless inexorable terrible retribution and no matter how much you run or pray for mercy, there will be none, and isn't it happy and great lets sing and dance about it hooray. • @chrispalmer7893

@@robertbusek30 This episode depicts vengeance, not justice. Terrible as Refa is, he doesn’t deserve to be beaten to death by a mob. That’s the whole point of having G’Kar walk away from it - earlier in the show he’d have enjoyed the revenge, at this point his character has outgrown that and takes no pleasure in the act. He likely doesn’t consider it justice, rather a necessary but regrettable evil balanced out by the release of Narn prisoners. What Refa deserves is due process. A proper trial and, if convicted, incarceration for life with no chance of release. So yes, the parallel with the song is perfect because the “cosmic justice” you and it speak of is an equally barbaric nonsense. There is no justice at all in the biblical concepts of sin and redemption (not least because the only sin the god of the Bible really cares about is the sin of not believing in and worshipping him; a narcissist is the very last person who should ever be allowed to judge others). The very concept of Hell, which is infinite punishment for finite crimes is the anthesis of justice. Indeed, it’s one of the reasons Roddenberry is right about religion being a primitive impulse which we’ll hopefully grow beyond. It’s not that JMS takes religion more seriously, he’s just more pessimistic about our ability to grow than Roddenberry - his issue is the speed with which society dumped superstition. At the time I’d have been inclined to agree, but as we’ve seen in the intervening years social change and the evolution of attitudes is happening with ever-increasing speed and it now feels much more likely we could be finally done with all that bullshit 200 years or so.

In Revelation, when God returns to judge the world, it's after the horrific persecution of God's people, where the souls of the slaughtered have been calling out to God asking when he will avenge their deaths, and the guilty sinners are righteously judged for it, just as Reefa persecuted and slaughtered the Narns and then gets his. He let Londo kill him, because the rules of the duel said the loosers family would be taken into the winners family. Therefore they would be save, because they weren't his family anymore. Refa was found with documents, making him look like a traitor to the Repulic for personal gain. The guy getting the 'proof' from Londo was tasked with ending the feud between Londo's and Refa's houses and he likely knew what had happened, though he also knew that there would be no proof of it. He had a choice between discrediting Refa and his entire house along with their allies or facing Londo and his allies, with Londo no longer looking like the joke they thought he was. Even after all he helped to start and end the war against the Narn thanks to his associate Morden he was seen as just a useful ally, not a real player. After Refa's death everyone walked a little more carefully around Londo. I don't think it was a bluff. Refa's house ende then and there.

I can't remember whether Londo ever finds out that Lord Refa had nothing to do with Adira's murder, that it was Mr. Morden and the Shadows. I think Londo would have felt unbearable guilt had he found out -- not guilt about getting Refa killed, but guilt that his association with the Shadows at least indirectly led to Adira's murder.

One of many scenes from B5 that I still remember so many years later. Refa certainly had it coming. Molari and G’Kar, sworn enemies for so long, working together to settle scores; both so businesslike and ruthless…against an utterly ruthless and evil man. With the gospel music it’s almost “Godfather”-esque. I grew up a Trekkie and still love it but this is one example of where B5 could be better in moments because it was willing to realistically go where Roddenberry wouldn’t….

Babylon 5 did some very unusual things for a sci-fi show. The black Baptist choir singing with a few Minbari trying to grasp it all, juxtaposed with G'kar allowing his men to beat the Centauri to death but walking away in disgust. That's good writing and acting. So much is going on at once, and the creators of the show respected us enough to gather it all up.

I don't think G'Kar wanted Refa to be killed for his crimes, but G'Kar knew that the Narn soldiers under his command needed to vent their anger for decades of oppression and wrongs against them. G'Kar walks away and lets them do it. But he is disgusted by such violence now.

I love how this scene shows G'Kar's slow progress from hate filled warrior on the Kha'Ri to an almost Messianic figure by the end of Season Five. A year previously to this G'Kar would have enthusiastically joined in the murder of Lord Reefa, but now he sadly walks away and lets the other Narn tear him apart. He's moved on, and can no longer justify such primal beast like violence.
