FIRST, precious photos!! We just had our first Grandaughter last week (first girl born in our family in over 45 years!!). So I’m just getting ready to start her first album!! I used to help a lot of customers get photos out of these sticky albums when I owned my scrapbook store. Here are some of my most popular ways to rescue these photos, first focusing on technology, then next, going to using our hands: WITH TECHNOLOGY: 1) Lay each page on a scanning bed (either a dedicated scanner, or a scanner included with a multi-function printer) & scan each page. If there’s a covering over the page, remove it before scanning. Now to divide all the photos on each page into individual files, some scanners have that feature in their software. If not, there are scanning &/or photo editing apps you can get to help you with this. 2) If you have no scanner, then use your Smartphone. Hover over each page & take a picture of each photo (if there’s a cover on top, take that off first!!). Then edit & SAVE each photo as needed. ***FYI, I prefer the scanning of photos, vs. taking photos with your Smartphone, because your phone will automatically compress the amount of pixels when saving, which will give you less pixels to work with when editing. WITHOUT TECHNOLOGY= USING YOUR HANDS: 3) Locate a product called: UN-DU Adhesive Remover. You can often find it in large craft stores, or on Amazon (***UNLESS you’re having it shipped to CA-if you live in CA, you’ll need to find somebody in another less environmentally restrictive state, have it shipped to them & then have them ship it to you!!) FYI, these days, when I’m just scrapping for myself & no longer for clients, about every 5 years, I buy between 5-7 bottles, have them shipped to a relative in Nebraska, who then ships them back to me. You don’t need much of the product to get things unstuck. Plus it works on lots of other things besides photos-it’s incredibly handy to have around the house!! -Using the corner of the shovel-like tool on top of the UN-DU bottle, lift a top corner of the photo up enough to get 2-3 drops UNDERNEATH the photo (keep your finger over the opening to control the product from coming out of the bottle too fast!). Continue gently using the shovel-like attachment on the top of the bottle, wiggling in a downward motion behind the photo, moving toward the opposite corner from where you started, to continue lifting the photo from the page. If it gets to the point where you’re getting resistance, then let another drop or two go underneath the photo, going in the direction where it’s still attached & repeat slowly & gently wiggling the shovel attachment on the top of the bottle. Continue until the photo completely lifts off the page. (For a regular 4x6” photo, you shouldn’t have to add a couple drops more than 3, maybe 4 times at most!). After the photo completely lifts up off the page, lay the back of the photo down onto some paper towels to get any dampness off the back that might still be left there. If you’ve accidentally gotten UN-DU onto the front of your photo, gently & immediately dab it off with clean paper towels. Don’t wipe it off, dab only. 4) Using NO chemicals at all: Remove each page from the album & gently bend the page back & forth in the vicinity of where the photos are located-but take care NOT to bend the photos!! If you’re really lucky, after doing this for a little while, you might be able to gently remove your photos. But if the photos are still attached at all, take some regular sewing thread, hold it between your hands & insert it under one of the corners that should have lifted - use a corner that has disconnected itself from the page the most. Keeping the thread tight & flat underneath the photo, keep carefully wiggling the thread back & forth toward the opposite corner & eventually, the thread should move there & totally disconnect the photo from the page & you can remove it!!! Hope that helps!! P.S. If you’ve been scrapping for a long time, trust me, we all have those photos that we cut into various shapes🤣! It seems so silly now, but that was the trend back then!! Another thing, these days we would NEVER scrap an original photo. But back then, there was no technology to easily get a copy of an original. ❤️Thank goodness for the technology we have now to be able to make a copy soooooo easily!!! We’re so spoiled thanks to technology now!!!!❤️

I just pulled a lot of photos out of one of those stick on yellowing albums and have it down to an art. First, don't try to rip the picture off. Tear the page out and off the coils and remove the plastic. Then bend the page back and forth and the photo will release. I got so good that I knew how far to bed and sometimes there would even be a "crack" sound.

Use the floss you have for teeth - you can try different kinds and put it under the corner and pull it on both sides - if that makes sense. I had to get a bunch done that way. I couldn't do all of them and found an app. There is also an app called Photomyne that you can take a photo of the whole page and it separates out all the photos digitally. It also works at family reunions that people bring photo albums and you don't need to take them apart. It isn't so great if you can't take the plastic off the front but it is better than nothing with old photo as albums- just sharing

Great Tips! I enjoyed watching your video. I have never scrapbooked before but I am hoping to start some albums soon. I have been organizing mine and my parents pictures for quite sometime now, as well as the ones that my grandparents had. I have boxes of photos that are roughly organized by family at the moment, but it still overwhelming. I have pictures of my Dad from birth to now, but also ones of my Aunt's, Uncle's, grandparents, great grandparents, great Aunts and Uncles and so on. We have found pictures dating back to the late 1800's and even some tin types from Civil War era. I am not exactly sure what to do. At the moment I have all of my childhood pictures from birth to high school organized in a box and I am hoping on starting a Scrapbook soon. I also hope to do one for my Dad and my Mom and later do albums of the older family pictures. I would like to use as much of the originals as I can and will probably use photo corners for those. I don't mind having some in a box but really don't want to have boxes and boxes of photos and papers all mixed up. I really don't want to crop too many pictures, but I am sure that I will have to crop at least some of mine. Thanks for any tips that you can give.

Older pictures are always harder to scrapbook especially originals. Try to work out one layout at a time. It’s still working on my baby album and I’ve been scrapping for over 20 years. Give yourself so grace and take it one layout at a time.

@@JulieCarriere_TheScrapZone Thank you so much. I have started working on my Album. I am 29 and figured it would be easier to do my album, then do one for each of my parents and so on. With the older pictures I am hoping to use photo corners. I probably won't use every single really old photo (especially if it's a tintype or a fragile photo). Thanks for responding!

Legacy Box is a company that will scan and digitize old photos. This may also work for photos stuck on that page. I have very few pictures of my dad and one picture I have that I love very much was actually glued to the glass frame it was in and it was impossible to remove. They were able to scan it right through the glass frame and save the photo me. They have lots of deals through the year and I recommend them for getting copies of these old pictures.

Omg Julie, this is so cute! I have already purchased the sketchbook and am looking forward to creating with it. I have a fuse tool but I used it to pop off all of the snaps on our stamp envelopes so I'm not sure it works any longer. When I first started scrapbooking, all of my childhood pictures that I took were in those magnetic albums. I used dental floss to remove the photos from the sticky pages! I hope that helps!

That turned out absolutely gorgeous!! I couldn't believe how pretty the photo looked when you added the flowers etc to the page. Makes me want to do mine all over again. I tackled my baby photos after my dad died in 2016 & I finally got hold of them after he passed away. He took most of them himself & managed to chop off the top of my head in most of them. Some photographer he turned out to be. It was something he always managed to do over the years. I had been wondering how to cut down the flip flaps for an 11" album as I am thinking that I am going to need to do it once I start my g/g/daughter's album as I have so many photos & she is only 4 years old but I have noticed so far this year that they aren't taking as many thank goodness. Where did you purchase that thing? Amazon?
