Baby Rachel STRANGEST and UNUSUAL Condition | S08 E05 | Medical Documentary | All Documentary
Since Rachel Webb was born, she has had urine that smells like maple syrup, cries constantly for no reason, has feeding problems, and has bouts of unresponsiveness. Then, Rachel unexplainably goes into a coma, but fortunately, doctors are able to diagnose her with maple syrup urine disease (MSUD).
People suffering from illnesses un or misdiagnosed, discuss their journey to finding a diagnosis.

As someone who was a ballet dancer but had to give it up because of what was later diagnosed as Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, I can answer that question. It is hard. Really hard. You literally grieve for the thing/s you have lost and the life that goes with that. But eventually, you do find other things to fill that void - in my case, arts and crafts.

Baby mammals tend to smell pleasant or similar to their father when they are born. It is an evolutionary strategy that stops baby mammals being rejected and helps them bond with the mother. It is basically redundant in humans but in other species such as lions where the males will eat unrecognised cubs, it is life saving

The US began screening for it earlier than Ireland and Australia did, but it just wasn't made mandatory because it was so unusual. can people like,, watch the whole episode before commenting stuff that’s explained in the episode? “what’s wrong with smelling like pancakes?” well the kid had a disease and that was one of the major symptoms. “why can’t the woman talk” because antibodies made for cancer attacked her cerebellum (and not everyone has these cancer fighting cells and it’s not necessarily a good thing if it attacks the brain as soon as the cancer is under control)
