Baby Rabbits Grow Up | Days 1 - 30 | Time Lapse | Silent VLOG

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

30 day grow up of a little of rabbits from our beautiful bunny, Veloci. Father is named Ghost.
The kits are a 5th generational purpose-bred cross between French Lops and Rex with a high percentage French lop.
One kit was born with Rex fur, the rest showed the standard coat that I breed for.
I filmed them every day for 30 days so I could show how fast kits grow up!

    Oh my goodness they are adorable! So cool to see the daily progression. I have had bunnies before but I got them as adults that needed homes. I have followed the growth of a wild litter that was in my garden. As the got bigger it was more difficult to check on them because I didn’t want them scattering from fear.

    @@OddPaw really,no wild rabbits? They are very hard to rehab. Most are often stolen from mamma because people don’t understand that she leaves them alone and only returns at dawn and dusk to feed them. The doe here was pretty funny and as I had been feeding her all winter she would let me get pretty close. I watched her start the nesting process by collecting bits of dry grass and carrying them around in her mouth. She built her nest in my hostas. I may or may not have accidentally caused the death of one baby. I picked it up and put it back in the nest,it was wandering towards the road. Next day it was dead in the nest. So either she killed it or didn’t let it feed or it died from shock. It did yell when I picked it up,they can scream! I know that their is something called rescue myopathy,where a wild animal can die from being handle. Doesn’t always happen obviously but can. Either way baby ended up dead. 😭 I put it in my freezer,I already had a dead baby squirrel in there. It was from an orphaned litter I found and raised. They were in horrible condition,so I lost one. I kept it in the freezer to bury as they were my babies,so bunny joined the squirrel for burial. 😉

    @@bettinah.7429 We'd probably have more wild ones if it weren't for the dogs. I know they've caught and eaten some of them. That's too bad that the baby at your house died. 😟 I usually freeze them too and give them to my snake guy. He decides what to do with them.

    @@OddPaw that's bullshit though. You're just too lazy to change their bedding regularly. That's why you keep them in a wire bottomed cage. This is cruel, rabbits should not be kept in cages like this. They should have a flat surface under their feet, that's easy to grip (such as carpeted or non polished wood etc). Wired cages like this hurt their hocks and affect their balance, amongst many other problems... You're an irresponsible rabbit owner, don't try to bullshit someone on the Internet otherwise.

    There are a lot of reasons the but main ones: They are harder to use in winter. They harbor bacteria in the metal spouts and within the bottle. And they aren't natural for rabbits to use so they lead to a life of dehydration. They typically only drunk enough to quench thirst from it rather than drinking all that they need.

    My rabbit just gave birth which was totally unexpected. I watched some videos because I wasn’t prepared for this at all and I was wondering. I have a cardboard box and cut two of the sides so the mom can get to it that’s inside the mothers cage except more bedding and hay in their nesting area and I put hay around so it was like a little hole cause they kept crawling out. She had 8 in total and 2 of them passed when I got to them. Any advice on taking care of these newborns? I was also wondering because the mother stepped on them a little bit, should I get another cardboard box and leave them in that in their mothers cage with her? Will she be able to feed them that way? I have so many questions

  • @OddPaw

    @OddPaw

    2 жыл бұрын

    So if you use a cardboard box, you'll want to make sure you swap it out about once a week to avoid it get ruined with urine. Make sure the side walls of it are high enough up that mom has to jump to get in and out, otherwise she's likely going to drag them out with her and she physically cannot put back her babies. Make sure they have hay and once their eyes open you can start putting a small bit of pellets un the nest with them. Around 3-4 weeks old they will start to come out and at that point you can remove the next box and just give them a pile of hay to eat and lay on. Moma will do pretty much everything else for them. :)

    @@OddPaw Thank you so much for the reply but got some bad news today. Mama ended up biting both arms off of one of the babies including one of the legs, bruised the other leg until it was swollen and ate the tail off. I had to separate all of them from the mama and the one that lost it’s limbs passed later this evening. She had 8 in total and 2 were stillborn and today she lost the one I mentioned. She also ate the ear off of one of them and that ones tail is also missing so I’ve separated them and put them in a cardboard box with lots of bedding and a little hay to coat the top. Me and my sister have been feeding them through a syringe. We try to do 2.5 ml a day of cat milk replacement, but they all in total never get passed a .5ml so we’ve been feeding them several times a day. One of the baby’s kept opening their mouths today like they were gasping for air. And they were also makin little noises. I tried o give them milk but they moved their head like it didn’t want it so do you know what that could be about? Also when I pick them up it’s front arms go out kinda like a splay legged

    Okay. I need help!! My dog was curious about a certain area in the backyard, covered mostly by leaves and inorganic materials, mostly shielding that area covered by leaves. But. I let her out yesterday morning, and low and behold she has a tiny rabbit in her mouth. The baby rabbit had some injuries. But I put some gloves on, and put him/her back into the little cubby/hole with his brothers & sisters. I thought about moving them to the front yard, away from my dog (dutch Sheapard), but then worried their mamma wouldn't find them. Instead I guarded the area more with ground stakes and other stuff to keep my dog out. Anyway, just hoping you might offer tips. I don't know if the mamma came back yet, or how long they stay incubated like that in a cubby area. How often do they nurse, etc.. Was also afraid maybe the mamma came back but was startled by any smell, etc. I never touched them w/out gloves, I read that bc this happened once before in the front yard, almost ran a small nest of them. That time I had to move them. But never leaned what became of them. Thanks !

    Mom usually only nurses 1-2 times a day. Keep your dog away from the area for 4 weeks and they should be gone by then. Your scent shouldn't deter her from coming back, you can carefully check on them once a day for the next 2-3 days to make sure they're still being fed, but most likely they will be fine. Some places won't take wild rabbits into rehabs, but you can always call and ask if they start to look sickly. One thing to check, also, is if they have a white dot on their heads. Since I'm not sure how old they might be, the white dot is referred to as a "milk spot" and fades away as the wild rabbits wean off their moms.

    @OddPaw Thanks for the reply! Well, to give you a reference, they don't have their eyes open yet. I'd imagine that's indicative of nursing age, but I'll look tomorrow-as I've lost the day light for today. It didn't look like the leaves had been moved from when I re-covered them. I did barricade the nest a little from my dog, but it's stuff a rabbit could get by/under. That won't cause the mamma to stray will it? Just trying to protect them. Rehab? Like animal shelter? Thnx! Btw, how can you tell if they've been fed or not? Thanks again for your response! We have SO many rabbits in this area, I have to be careful doing yard work bc I never know where a mama has left a nest of bunnies.

    @OddPaw I have another update/ question for you. I've been able to keep the baby rabbits safe by building a baracade of sorts with materials their mamma rabbit could pass through, but would keep my dutch Sheapard dog out of. All was going well until two nights ago, when my dog unfortunately killed the mamma. It was terribly sad to see. I let my dog out around supper time, when I went to call back in, I opened the door and she was dragging the mamma rabbit in her mouth! My Shepard is 4.5, and has never attempted to bring a rodent or anything else she's killed into the house, so it was especially heart breaking bc I instantly knew it had to he the mamma. Obviously I can't know for sure. I attempted putting some leaves above the nest/den area to see if I could identify their mother coming back to feed (if it somehow wasn't her my dog killed), but couldn't be certain. So! Long story short. The next morning after letting my dog out and watching her closely, then letting her back inside. I came back out to check on the bunnies, when I did I heard one hopping around outside the den. This was exciting and worrisome, bc I knew my dog was just out there and was astonished she didn't smell or hear the bunny. I chased that little bunny for a couple minutes, finally got it back with its siblings. Anyway, I've put them into a big plastic bin with a towel at the bottom, then placed their nest materials in with it, and placed it in the front yard. No way Im changing my dog eating those bunnies. Finally to my question, then I'll leave you alone-I promise. I know they can't stay in that bin, bc they're too young, and also too old. At best they're probably 2 weeks old, and that's a stretch bc I found them 8/9 days ago. Can I let them go now into the free or will they be easily spotted and eaten by a predator (not my dog). I will try and build then a nest in the front, but dont know what else to do.

    There is a very good chance that she will have babies again in 4 weeks! Hopefully you have separated them? Moma will take care of them, just make sure to free feed her pellets and hay and she will do the rest. When they're about 2 weeks old they will start to explore, make sure there is a safe place they can be in and not be able to get out of. A 2 inch gap is wide enough for babies to slip through for several weeks.

    Actually, appropriate wiring flooring is perfectly acceptable for well furred rabbits, such as mine. Lots of pet people blame wire saying it's bad when they have the wrong information. Bad wire, or inappropriately sized wire IS bad for rabbits. And bad rabbits with bad feet have feet problems too. But when you have high quality animals with high quality, appropriate wire it's actually ideal for rabbits. I have a whole video talking about the right wire and showing off my rabbits gorgeous feet. I encourage you to watch it and see for yourself. That being said, I've actually moved my rabbits into a larger colony so they're now in a pen instead of a cage. It's been my goal for a few years now and I am so happy to have been able to achieve that. 🥰

  • @OddPaw

    @OddPaw

    2 жыл бұрын

    From birth - 2 weeks old moma will feed them for you. After 2 weeks start offering hay and a small bit of pellets in the next box for them to nibble on. Once they are 3-4 weeks old they will start jumping out of the nest and will learn to eat from a typical feeder and water dish that their moma has. The pellet protein % doesn't especially matter, just make sure it's a quality complete rabbit feed. I personally use an 18% but if you're using a 15-16% it's fine, don't worry about changing out the pellets while they are still growing. At 7-8 weeks old you can start weaning them and after a week of being weaned they should be in the clear from weaning enteritis and you can look at rehoming or whatever you plan to do with them.

    I breed for meat and feeders. So trust me, there is no abandonment going on here. As for the wire, it's misinformation spread from pet people. The wrong wire, the wrong set up can cause issues with feet. But the proper wire supported properly is ideal and healthy for rabbits. For an update though, my rabbits now live in a colony in a pen. I recently sold my cages since a colony style works better overall for production.

    @@locket5626 that would be a very bad idea as the rabbits can urinate and poop on it and cause many more issues with their feet. • @OddPaw

    @@locket5626 cardboard is also bad since it will absorb urine and poop will get smashed onto it. They will eat it, which isn't too bad. But it will mold very quickly and slippery surfaces can cause leg injuries and splayed legs in babies. Typically I leave the nest in with the babies until they're a month old, depending on how much they're using it. But they learn quickly how to properly walk on wire. My lines have very well furred feet so I don't have issues with them getting sore hocks. It would be similar to us walking on it with pillows on our feet. I appreciate your concern, because improper wire use is also something I strongly advocate against. It's sad to see animals being harmed by those with misinformation. The biggest issues with any type of solid floor in the cages, is urine scald, which occurs from it not properly draining or from them sitting in a wet floor.. Even my nest boxes have holes in the bottom for better drainage and airflow. :)

    *This is cruel.* Rabbits should not be kept in cages like this. They should have a flat surface under their feet, that's easy to grip (such as carpeted or non polished wood etc). Wire bottomed cages like this hurt their hocks and affect their balance, amongst many other problems. Please have some decency and don't let these innocent souls suffer. By uploading a video like this, you're also spreading the notion that this is okay, when it's not. Please rethink this matter.

Obviously its preferred to have bunnied on wooden flat surfaces but wire can also reduce smell on the rabbit and keep them nice and clean.

    I respect your opinion but I would have to disagree with it. There is plenty of research that disproves that wire is bad. Yes wire CAN be bad. Lots of people use the wrong wire. Even with good wire, bad genetics can still cause issues. This is why good breeders only breed healthy rabbits with good genetics. There are certainly some people out there that truly do have their animals in horrible conditions. I've seen them first hand and reported them. I've had Animal control out here (due to someone else's dogs running loose) and they complimented me on how nice my set up was and how well cared for my rabbits were. And even then, I have large mats in the cages that the rabbits can use to get off the wire, and most of the time they still choose to sit on it because they have no issue with it. Mine have exceptional feet genetics, something I've worked years on to better my lines. I understand that pet people see wire and think it's bad, because you are right a lot of people do it poorly. This is why we must educate on proper use and good breeding practices. However, I understand that even if you read this, you will still argue, and you are totally entitled to your opinion, just as I am mine. I appreciate you expressing concern.
