I sat in a riverbed, and a whole family of 4 platypus swam up to me. Looked me up and down. Then continued on their way. Magic. I will never forget that day.

I bought a digital camera with a decent zoom lens a year or two ago, and it still brings me so much joy to just sit back and take pictures of all kinds of common birds visiting my balcony on a foraging trip, for a sip of water or to take a quick bath. It brings me so much joy every time. Nature is beautiful and we should preserve it where possible. Even cities can harbour all kinds of life if done right. I’ve been ill for the past year, but I hope to become a wildlife photographer. For now it’s just urban wildlife, but it’s nature nonetheless.

This odd-looking creature has a bill and webbed feet like a duck, a body and fur like an otter, and a tail like a beaver. It lays eggs like a chicken, burrows like a wombat, and suckles its young like a mother bear. Little wonder that the first scientist to examine one suspected that it was a hoax!

  • @broadbandislife

AKCHUYALLY their eggs are leathery like those of lizards, not hard-shelled like those of birds. But yeah when European naturalists first got their hands on a taxidermied one in 1799 they considered it a hoax - not unreasonably, as Frankensteining up chimeric taxidermies out of several different critters had a long and storied pedigree. The _Wolpertinger_ out of German folklore is a well-known and prolific example and the platypus is almost as bizarre.

@@RealFarknMcCoythere's actually no official term at all for young platypuses, and both "platypup" and "puggle" are used. For whatever reason (presumably because people think the word is cute, which is understandable), the idea that puggle is somehow "correct" is commonly stated. To the extent that it's widely used, it's possible that it's slowly becoming true (since this is a living language and all!) But of course you'll note he doesn't use the term in this video, for example and says "young platypus", which is around as official as it gets.

I suspect this was filmed in Tasmania, where the platypus are more diurnal than on the mainland... as they spend more time out & about in daylight they don't tend to spook as easily. But with any wild animal, a little know-how and _a lot_ of patience can reap rewards... and I guarantee that he spent many, _many_ wet & chilly hours patiently waiting to get those few minutes of footage!

I was blessed to see one paddling around in a creek in a downpour near Mullum in Australia while volunteering on my travels. I get why he’s wearing that amazing clothing, because I came away with a nice big blood filled leech attached to me from having stood still in rapt attention at the platypus for so long LOL
