Baby Gorilla - Columbus Zoo and BREAKING NEWS IN CLEVELAND 2-22-24

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Today, I have the latest video of the gorilla baby at The Columbus Zoo & Aquarium and Breaking News from The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. First, the new baby is Kwame, daughter of Sully- baby girl was born in July, 2023. Sully was 8 years old when she gave birth to Kwame. Here you see Sully, Kwame, Mac, then Jamani with Ktembe and Cassie from the other Columbus Zoo troop.
The father of Kwame was Kamoli. He was a 10 year old male at the zoo, who was not the leader of the troop. Kamoli and another gorilla called JJ have been temporarily moved to Zoo Atlanta while Columbus prepares a space to have a bachelor group of gorillas.
***The Breaking News is a baby gorilla will be coming to Cleveland Metroparks Zoo from the Fort Worth Zoo in Texas.
A gorilla in Fort Worth had some medical issues and her baby needed to be delivered via C Section. Neither that female, nor the other females in the troop did not accept the baby. So the Species Survival Plan experts have decided to send the baby gorilla to Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.

Has your zoo ever thought about giving up one of your females to another lonely silverback? There seem to be many bachelor's and more females in troops. Isn't reproducing important to keep the species going? I feel bad for all the lonely silvers 😢

The zoo population of gorillas is closely managed by a team of professionals. They create a Species Survival Plan with many goals in mind, including providing a sustainable, genetically diverse zoo population of gorillas. In the wild, there are silverbacks with multiple females and their offspring and there are groups of all male gorillas (bachelor groups). Some males just never become fathers. For gorillas, uncontrolled reproduction would lead to non sustainable populations. We need proper facilities and the money to provide for all their lifetime needs. So a controlled breeding system helps ensure that can be done. Good questions, this is an abbreviated answer . You can find more by reading about the goals of the Assoc. of Zoos and Aquariums and learn more about SSP’s. Thanks for your questions.

@@larrysanimalsafari Excellent answer. Gorillas are a very complicated species to look after in zoos, because they can't live together in big social groups with multiple adult males, the way chimps can. But neither are they happy living alone, the way orang-utans (usually) are. They need the company of their own kind to be healthy and happy. Because as many males are born as females, it's always going to be tricky just finding living situations for mature male gorillas that keeps them happy, without causing dangerous conflicts, or unwanted breeding. There is actually a young male gorilla, about 6 or 7 years old, at Twycross Zoo in the UK, Shufai, who apparently has been castrated, presumably so he can keep on living with his family group indefinitely. Maybe this practice is more common than we realize.

Nina I spend way too much time thinking about where Tusa could go. The problem is that many of these females are related to silverbacks, and there are more gorillas than zoos. The SSP does contribute to the problem by moving the females from zoo to zoo and from silverback to silverback. Both Tusa and Nneka have huge families and they have relatives in at least 10 zoos each. In fact, both of them are related to Kebi. They won't ever mate some of the males. That's what they told me about two of Mokolo's brothers. They claim their genes are overrepresented in zoos. I thought that was ridiculous, but that family has silverbacks all over the world.

@dmoore2732 Thanks for the info. It seems that Japan has that problem, too. Gentaro and Annie are the only two possible to mate because they are all related. Maybe if other countries work together, then we can find a few more possible mates , or rescue those that are illegally kidnapped and put in those side show street jailings who can't be returned to the wild .

@@danyel875 That's why they have to be careful when they breed them, as so many gorillas in zoos are too closely related to each other. If I'm not mistaken, little Kwame's birth was not planned and the zoo had actually thought 8-year-old Sully was a male until she suddenly produced a baby! Maybe I'm thinking of another zoo where this happened, but wherever it was, it must have been a big "Oops!" to everyone.

She’s having such a great time playing with all the enrichment items. ❤ Sully is doing a great job - especially considering that she’s such a young first-time Mama. Kwame looks strong and big for her age - maybe she’s an early developer like her mum. The scenes with Jamani and her dad were SO cute. She’s quite the little firecracker - she has the same crazy energy as our boy Kayembe, and Jabali in Taiwan❣️I’m so excited for little Jameela to join the Cleveland troupe - I wonder which of Mokolo’s ladies will adopt her? Freddie and Kebi are both very maternal, but I kind of hope Freddie doesn’t take on another baby at her age - plus, I don’t think Kayembe would be very happy! Whoever it is, I really hope it all works out. 🤞❤😊

Well, in the wild there is usually just one male mating with the troop females. That’s how it is for gorillas. When males reach maturity but not old enough, or strong enough, to take over the troop, they leave and join a bachelor group of males. There they mature, continue growing and if it works out they may challenge a troop leader and take over a troop, or draw females away from other troops and start their own troop. 😁

There are two gorilla troops in the Columbus zoo. One troop has an 8 month old baby, and the other troop has a 4 year old. There is more info. In the description below the video. The Fort Worth baby will change troops because none of the females in her home troop will accept her.

She's so adorable ❤. What happened to her poor head though? Looks like she's got a few scabs on top of her head. Poor baby girl! Thank goodness baby gorillas are pretty resilient so it doesn't seem to be bothering her at all. I really really hope it works out for the baby on its way to Cleveland!!! Of course when I move away to Philly my hometown of Cleveland gets another baby gorilla to love on! Looks like we'll be driving back for a visit this summer!!

My guess is the little one was the victim of rough housing by the 8 and 10 year old males that were part of the troop before. Thanks for sharing a comment.

Interesting the difference between Kunda and Kwame if you consider the ages of the mothers. I wonder Kebi seems so protective and baby not as independent and she’s 32. Kwame’s mama is only 8 or 9. Not bad or good just interesting.

Sully no longer has any teenagers harassing her and Kwame. Kebi has to keep Kayembe from hurting Kunda accidentally. He wants Kunda to run and play now, but she is not ready yet.

Oh my gosh! I was wondering what would happen with that sweet baby gorilla. Thank you for telling us this news! And congrats on subscribers numbers. You deserve lots more. PS Is there a sore place on the baby's head at about 5:00? It doesn't look raw or anything - just hairless.😊 Last thing... I wish that they'd give Kayembe toys, too. It may not be natural, but neither is being in a zoo. ❤

I wish they would give Kayembe toys too. I saw the abrasions on the baby’s head. My guess is it happened when one of the 8 or 10 year olds dragged the baby away to have it play with them. They are now at Zoo Atlanta with a bachelor group. Just my opinion.

I have no confirmation on that, I did notice the scuff marks. I understand before the two male gorillas were sent to Zoo Atlanta they played rough and grabbed the baby to take her and play. Could they have done it? Or is it some skin condition? I don’t know.

How is Nneka? Is she doing better? Just a question as I know very little about gorillas. I thought male silverbacks would not accept a baby from another group (silverback)? What will happen with Mokolo? Are they worried at all that he might hurt the new baby? Wondering how they would handle that?

  • @larrysanimalsafari

I saw Nneka today- she seems to be doing fine. Although I couldn’t get a good look at her neck. She was not touching it or favoring looking one way or the other. I’m not so concerned about Mokolo. He does very little with the previous two infants. Just wonder who might take on the new infant as a foster mom. I’ll share anything I learn.
