Baby Eclectus Parrot (Salem) - Hand Reared from Hatching Day 1 to 60

Спорт

More videos of Salem: • Salem - Baby Eclectus ...
I had no idea I would get this many views. I am not even a KZread partner. I might have to make some more videos like this. My neighbor wants me to hatch some Galahs. While Galahs are quite a bit easier than Eclectus, I am sure it will make for a great video. GLA. Edit: Lately I have been contemplating the incubation and hand-rearing of another Eclectus. But Eclectus is one of the most difficult (if not the most difficult) to hand rear. I mean I can do it. But It takes a lot out of you (me). Nevertheless, I will release some new bird videos soon. Thank you for watching. For more information (the best information) check out parrotforums.com It has a great community and you will get all your questions answered there.

    No. I incubated the egg myself after several babies died in the parent's care. Though I do not recommend this for anyone who has not reared other easier birds. Be prepared for a lot of work. Eclectus are one of the hardest birds to hand rear. Personally, I would not recommend feeding the baby bird then returning to the mother. I would worry there is a small chance she might reject the baby and kill it. you MUST keep the baby warm in a brooder. Can I recommend asking questions on www "parrotforums" .com Act now and set a proper brooding box with thermostat. consider buying the ebook from google called "A Guide to Eclectus Parrots as Pet and Aviary Birds - Rob Marshall, Ian Ward". A lot of people truly underestimate what is involved. On day one you will have to feed the baby 15 times (from memory). Get all your equipment now. Do not wait until the baby is born. You would be far better off leaving the babies with their mother until they are much older. At least until 1 month old. But even then it's still a lot of work and you MUST have a brooder/brooding box with thermostat-controlled heating. Make sure you get on that forum. it's called "parrotforums" there people there even more experienced than me.

    @JasonBlack66

    3 жыл бұрын

    Sorry for the late reply. It could be that you have a different subspecies to me (Red Sided Eclectus (are one of the largest). But the feeding regime for a baby Eclectus that age is super intensive. most people are not up to it. Not saying that's you. I'm just running through a few reasons for underweight chicks (It's good your weighing though). Another reason could be a poor quality formula. It could also be an incorrect temperature of the formula. Incorrect Temperature for Brooder/Incubator. Yeast or Bacterial Infection of the crop or gut. I hope everything is ok and I am so sorry I did not see your post. I really need to get notifications set up properly and also set youtube to display the most recent posts first. It seems to be sorting them some other way. Consider getting someone experienced involved or perhaps an Avian Vet. If no Avian vet available, just go to a regular vet. Make sure you visit Good Forums like parrotforums [.com] Best Wishes & Goodluck :)

    Sorry, I didn't see your comment. I think I need to change the settings on youtube to display the most recent comments. Anyway, Personally, I don't sell animals. But you should not have any trouble finding some for sale in a place like Gumtree [.com]. However, there are usually plenty of breeders around in many countries. If this is your first parrot I would implore you to consider a species less demanding (Eclectus are super demanding) species. Consider a Cockatiel or if you want a larger parrot Consider a Cockatoo like the Sulphur Crested Cockatoo. They too are highly intelligent and good talkers but a Cockatoo's Diet is much less demanding than an Eclectus. Basically, the parrots that mostly eat fruit and veg are very hard to manage over a long period of time. It takes quite a bit of practice to develop a rhythm and system for feeding these birds. Don't get me wrong, it can be done, but your going to have to have a hell of a commitment and all too often people think they can, while they really cant. Good Luck & Best Wishes. P.S. a great Forum (where some people offer to sell birds) is "parrotforums" [.com]

    How were you able to fit that much formula in his crop without over stretching it! My one is 4 weeks old and he’s just getting 20-25mL per feed. I’m sure he could fit a little more but Definitely not the amount you’re feeding at his age. Anything over that amount and his crop would be overstretched which would cause damage or can be aspirated. I’m not meaning to sound rude, my mind just can’t comprehend fitting 30+ mls of formula let alone 60mL into their crop Lol. He is beautiful and I commend you on your great efforts in raising him from the hatch date!

  • @JasonBlack66

    @JasonBlack66

    Nah, friend your not rude. Good Questions to ask. I am so glad you ask. To begin with I have to assume you're talking about the feeds where he is older. After about Day 35 there began to be a lot of Spillage/Wasted Formula. The video quotes the amount in the syringe not what got to his crop. Please don't follow my video as a Guide. I had a lot of help and purchased some really good books on Breeding Eclectus Specifically. Ebooks from Google. One, in particular, has a chart that shows how much they should be receiving in each feed and how many per day and how much they should weigh. That Book is Called: "A Guide to Eclectus Parrots as Pet and Aviary Birds - Rob Marshall, Ian Ward" It's pretty Darm good. Any How Good luck and I wish you and your baby Good Luck. Hmm. That doesn't cover it. I wish you and your baby all the luck in the universe. Please don't ever be afraid to ask for help or query what other people are doing and why. Be respectful the way you have been with and you will rock the world! Also, don't use KZread as your bible. use published well know books as your bible and youtube for good entertainment/maybe a guide at best. I am an amateur video maker (at Best) so I may not have put the video together in a way that covers everything. Maybe I should. But no with regards to a 60ml syringe of Formula (from memory) we are talking about 45 to 55 ml actually getting to the crop.

    Just to let you know, Salem is doing very well. He is now 107 Days old (15 Weeks/3.8 Months) and completely weaned. He is an angel. He loves me so much. He seems to just adore me. Which is a little odd, considering I am the one who weaned him [I say that coz some parrots can get a little cranky with the ones who wean them] Though I may need to get some specialist help because he is a little aggressive to my wife and other animals. I don't know if you know or not, but for a small fee there are specialist Bird Trainers/Coaches around who will help you resolve any behavioral issues you might have. I have not personally done that before but am getting ready to give it a whirl.

    Jayson Black thank you for your reply and clearing that up for me, it makes a lot more sense haha. I’m so glad Salem is still doing terrific. My Roscoe is now 7 weeks old and we have begun the weaning process and he loves his fresh fruit and veggies. I wish there was a lot more good information on raising these beautiful birds. I will definitely have a search for that book! My Roscoe has had crop emptying issues whilst growing up so his birdy childhood hasn’t been the best. We’ve taken him to the vet 3 times and found nothing in his crop that shouldn’t be there (it was a long process to try to figure out what was going wrong) So we’ve come to the conclusion that it was his formula not being a good match for him. Since switching formulas he’s emptying his crop like a champ! How’s now taking 35ml per feed. I’m no beginner when it comes to hand raising birds or bird ownership but he has definitely been the most tricky to hand raise as Eclectus are a lot more sensitive to their environment, well that’s what I have found anyway lol. I wish you would have documented and made videos on his whole upbringing (any complications, weaning etc.) but this video is still awesome. I wanted to make one like this but with the complications mentioned above I didn’t have time. I completely agree with only using KZread as a guide. I really hope Roscoe still loves me once he is fully weaned, as yes you are correct in saying they usually distance themselves from their parents (hand raisers) when they are fully independent. I hope to one day free flight train Roscoe so we can have all the fun in the world together. Best of luck with your future with Salem xx

  • @Fluffy_Hummingbird

    Jayson Black oh and in regards to his cranky behaviour towards other animals and your partner; it seems to be second nature to them as a species. I have noticed that with Roscoe his protective/aggressive nature has already started to show as he knows how to stick up for himself when my other animals & birds go near him (I never let them interact). I hope to integrate him into my small flock of green cheeks when he is fully weaned though. This behaviour is also shown in my mother in-laws Eclectus, he does not like other birds and is still working on living harmoniously with her other parrots.

  • @JasonBlack66

    @JasonBlack66

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@Fluffy_Hummingbird You can eventually let them interact but with Eclectus, it must be done very slowly over months. Salem now seems to love my wife more than me. lol. But she now feeds him daily fruit, veges, and pellets (instead of me). So, even though I raised him from an incubated egg we felt that the only way for him to bond with her (at least somewhat quickly was to allow some dependence on her) It worked. He loves her and he has also chilled right out on our dogs and other birds. He is now 8 months old and he is a very happy bird. He is not speaking English words yet (not unusual until 1 to 1.5 years, they grow up very slow) but he makes all kinds of words like noises from morning till late afternoon then he goes quiet before bed. But we know he will talk very soon. You can just tell by his curiosity of sound and the sounds he makes he will be a really big talker soon. A lot of love helps. Try not to spoil them too much with Fatty Foods (I have and am now having to stop it) The Eclectus world is amazing, but it takes some crazy commitment wouldn't you agree?

    Hello. I personally dont sell Animals. But we purchased our first Eclectus through a website called "Gum Tree" also check parrot Forums such as "parrotforums[.com]" and find breeders in your local area. You might be surprised that there are many breeders near you. I'm not sure what you experience is like with parrots but I like to warn people that Eclectus are not for beginners. Eclectus should not be your first Parrot. They need a very special (Labour intensive) Diet of fruit, vegetables as well as a few other things. They also require alot of love and attention. They also need a lot of large toys for mental stimulation. Not that different from having a 5 year old human child (alot of work). If this is your first parrot I would reccomend keeping a cockatiel at first. If all goes well after 1 year, then consider getting a small frugivore like a rainbow lorikeet or simlar. Then perhaps consider an Eclectus. Eclectus are very difficult for a beginer. Eclectus parrots live for more than 30 years.

    Hi, its going to be difficult to help you with youtube. Are you familiar with Discord? (Communications app) The forum I get on is called "parrotforums" (just google search for parrotforums you will get VERY GOOD help there. Little noises in sleep are not unusual. Constant screeching might be a problem, but really you need to get on parrot forums I also recommend. It depends on what country you are in but in Australia, the best formula is Vetafarm NEO care. But just try to get the highest quality Formula suitable for Frugivores. at 35 days old you should be feeding you, baby, 4 times per day approx 30 to 35ml per feed so a total of 120 to 140 ml per day. It's important you determine the baby's age quickly. So get on Parrotforums. you won't have to wait long for an answer. Just make sure you put your heart and soul into this and don't be tight with money. you're going to have to spend some money on good formula, toys and vet bills. Good luck and I will try and find you in the forums. Let me know if you have Discord and I will try to help you on Discord.

  • @JasonBlack66

    @JasonBlack66

    3 жыл бұрын

    yes in the example you have given it means I have fed him 61 ml of formula 3 times in one day. However, this includes Fresh Fruits and Veg. At this stage, you would not want to ONLY feed formula at this rate. if you are rearing Eclectus yourself please google "list of bad fruit and veg for Eclectus" I was one of the lucky parents in that "Salem" pretty much weaned himself. He would let me know when to give larger Feeds but fewer times per day by refusing to eat. I also used a very useful Book "A Guide to Eclectus Parrots as Pet and Aviary Birds - Rob Marshall, Ian Ward" (can be found on Google Books as an e-book). I also had help from a local experienced breeder and we were certain (and also right) for the precise time to do everything and as a result, he is huge. He is so much bigger than his mother and father. Just really dig in and research. Make sure you don't believe just any random joe (not even me) double/Tripple check with other sources of information. @@sarahblacksell4006 Depends on age. Myself, I don't force it, I let the baby tell me when they are ready. for me, I can start to see signs when the baby wants less formula and more stimulation. For me, that is the right time to start giving them other options. I also include special pellets designed for Eclectus and some frugivores. In Australia, our best choice is "Paradise" Pellets by a company named "Vetafarm". You should not ever need to force weaning, it should be a natural transition. Good luck )

    I hand-reared him on a formula called "Neo Care" by "Vetafarm" after that I fed him Vegies that were steamed (Broccoli, Sweet Potatoe, Cauliflower, corn, peas & Capsicum) however the fruit was raw. (Strawberry, Kiwi fruit, grape, apple). there are some bad fruits and veggies so just google for "list of bad foods for Eclectus" We also supply "Paradise Pellets" By "Veta Farm" All were chopped into small pieces during the early stages of weaning. Once Salem was eating well we gave him larger pieces to give him something to work and and "Shred" Salem is now 14 months old and has his basic foods but for fun, we skewer Half a carrot or Apple etc. Keeps him busy for a while.
