⏰ SERIES DESCRIPTION
⏡⏡⏡⏡⏡⏡⏡⏡⏡⏡⏡⏡
Dads exist in every culture and in every animal on earth and yet, in humans they're not often studied, and sometimes ignored entirely. In this series, I dug into the importance of dads in human relationships. I learned that #Dads need to be present, engaged, and involved. How having a dad around affects you (for better or worse). That meant exploring what it means to be a dad, whether the kids same-sex parents are any different than those of different-sex parents, how children physiologically change their parents brain, and whether toxic masculinity and machismo is harming your kids.
Dads are more than just a male parent (they don't even have to be). They're a set of traits that show children who they can be and are different than their other parent. Dads are source of security, safety, play, communication, emotion, empathy, love, and companionship (Just like any other parent). Non-birthing parents have a different outlook than birthing parents simply because they’re different human beings!

HERE'S THAT NEW STUDY ON HEXADECANAL!
Sniffing the human body volatile hexadecanal blocks aggression in men but triggers aggression in women
www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.abg1530
In both men and women, HEX increased activity in the left angular gyrus, an area implicated in perception of social cues. HEX then modulated functional connectivity between the angular gyrus and a brain network implicated in social appraisal (temporal pole) and aggressive execution (amygdala and orbitofrontal cortex) in a sex-dependent manner consistent with behavior: increasing connectivity in men but decreasing connectivity in women.
How Dads bond with toddlers: Brain scans link oxytocin to paternal nurturing

Fathers given boosts of the hormone oxytocin show increased activity in brain regions associated with reward and empathy when viewing photos of their toddlers, an Emory University study finds.
Is Maternal Instinct Only for Moms? Here's the Science.

The latest looks at brain chemicals and social development suggest we need to rethink our definition of motherhood to include more than just moms.
Oxytocin and the Development of Parenting in Humans
www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3943240/
The nonapeptide oxytocin (OT) has been repeatedly implicated in processes of parent-infant bonding in animal models; yet, its role in the development of human parenting has received less attention and no research has addressed the involvement of OT in the transition to fatherhood.

Oh, this makes so much sense now - just after I'd given birth to my son, they were cleaning him up, but it felt like that they were taking a million years to do it as I was very impatient to hold him, then when they did lay him on my chest, I (quite literally) growled/yelled at the nurses that my child wasn't close enough to me - I said, I can't smell him!! Lol 😆 Later on I kept thinking that that was a weird thing to say. Also, I had my son at age 35, & had lived a very full life by that point 👉 in time, but all I could think 🤔 was how in the world did I ever live my life without him?! Now, I know why, & tyvm for this series, I sooo cannot wait for more episodes 😀 🙌 😍

How does it work on siblings? I (19) have 2 younger half-brothers (7 and 5). When they were still little they smelled, well, good as you said. My dad loves the smell of babies, which makes much more sense now lol. Though does it have the same effect on older brothers as on dads or not really? Very interesting series btw, loving it :))

The science on the baby smell and the HEX chemical was kinda mind blowing. But makes so much sense, love that new baby smell, never thought much else of it till now. And Thank You for those SciComm Happy Hour videos, where I was first introduced to Dr. Ali Mattu. I've been following his work ever since. As well as some of the other Science Communicators, but felt I should point out Dr. Mattu since you referenced him in this video.

I've watched my littlest cousin grow up from diapers to be a man with his own little family now. He'd married a young lady who already had a little girl, and he was keen to make sure she was loved and disciplined, as he thought she'd never really had a dad in her life. Then he had his own biological daughter.. and man, is he totally a mush mallow now... He still treats his adopted eldest daughter a little differently, but with more compassion, and less strict. He was never all that macho, but acted it.. That little girl he created definitely changed his life.

I guess I’m weird, I do NOT like the “typical baby smell”. Maybe because much of it was the soaps, shampoos or powders used, but, bleargh, not my favorite thing, by a long shot.
