In this video:
A former teammate of Babe Ruth’s once recalled the Bambino by saying, “You’ve got to remember, this guy wasn’t born. He fell out of a tree.” Ruth grabbed life by the throat (or maybe it was another part of life’s anatomy) and shook it up… frequently.

    I have a question that Today I Found Out might explore: Does giving a person alcohol to drink or slapping them calm them down when they're hysterical or stressed? These are common methods of settling people's nerves in films and TV shows, especially older ones, but I've never heard of any proof that they work. Alcohol is a depressant, of course, which may be the principle behind its supposed calming effects. Slapping a hysterical person seems likely to have the opposite effect, however, as it might cause them to react violently. Certainly, I've seen panicky or upset people get violent when touched. Perhaps psychologists have something to say about this. Can you address this subject, please?

    I think you're overstating the impact of his second wife. He went through periods of good discipline before that as well. Not surprisingly, they corresponded to his best years in baseball, like his 60 home runs in 1927 (consodered by some the equivalent of about 104 today, given the size of the ballparks and other rule changes). That was the year before he remarried. And he had years of discipline before that as well as years of glutteny afterward (as you alluded to). So I don't think it is fair to suggest his second wife had such a dramatic impact. He was also getting older by then, which presumably also would calm him down a bit. Now imagine how great he would have been had he been playing today, with the tight management that he REALLY needed and the modern rules as well. To anyone who argues he wasn't the greatest ballplayer of all time, I point out that who, amongst the players in discussion for that title (like Satchel Page, Ty Cobb, Willie Mays, Satahara Oh, among others) not only had his offensive dominance but was also a border-line hall of fame calliber pitcher, being among a handful of pitchers who had the equivalent of a perfect game without technically getting one (in his case, he came in in relief with nobody out in the first and got 27 outs in a row).

    Well, there's some people who are merely more likely to develop addictions, and if I'm not wrong there's a disorder which causes this in much higher rates. However the original poster gave me the impression that it was the more common use of the term, just dismissing somebody as "addictive". I don't believe one addictive personality exists, however some people are more likely to have addictions.

  • @Bogwedgle

    @Bogwedgle

    6 жыл бұрын

    I just meant a personality more likely to foster addictions. Neurotic, impulse control issues, struggles to connect with other people on a personal level. Fame at a young age will do that to a person, you stop growing, basically just remain a kid forever, it's one of the reasons why so many young singers and child actors end up a total mess.

    Draeas Talonsbane When you're the greatest of all time at something, people will keep talking about it long after you die. We may be seeing his 60 home run record broken soon for only the second time other than during the steroid era (when it was broken several times). Like Marris, it is likely that Stanton will need more than the 154 games in a season that Ruth had to do it, but it is still a very impressive feat. Even getting close is very rare. 50 home run seasons don't happen every year (again, at least not since the end of the steroid era).
