Bulleh Shah lived after the Pashto Sufi poet Rahman Baba (1632-1706) and lived in the same period as Sindhi Sufi poet Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai (1689-1752). His lifespan also overlapped with the Punjabi poet Waris Shah (1722-1798), of Heer Ranjha fame, and the Sindhi Sufi poet Abdul Wahab (1739-1829), better known by his pen name Sachal Sarmast. Amongst Urdu poets, Bulleh Shah lived 400 miles awy from Mir Taqi Mir (1723-1810) of Agra. Bulleh Shah practised the Sufi tradition of Punjabi poetry established by poets like Shah Hussain (1538-1599), Sultan Bahu (1629-1691), and Shah Sharaf (1640-1724). The verse form Bulleh Shah primarily employed is the Kafi, popular in Punjabi and Sindhi poetry. Many people have put his Kafis to music, from humble street-singers to renowned Sufi singers like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Pathanay Khan, Abida Parveen, the Waddali Brothers and Sain Zahoor, from the synthesized techno qawwali remixes of UK-based Asian artists to the Pakistani rock band Junoon.

बुल्ले शाह व उनके गुरु के सम्बन्धों को लेकर बहुत सी बातें प्रचलित हैं, बुल्ले शाह जब गुरू की तलाश में थे; वह इनायत जी के पास बगीचे में पहुँचे, वे अपने कार्य में व्यस्त थे; जिसके कारण उन्हें बुल्ले शाह जी के आने का पता न लगा; बुल्ले शाह ने अपने आध्यात्मिक अभ्यास की शक्ति से परमात्मा का नाम लेकर आमों की ओर देखा तो पेड़ों से आम गिरने लगे; गुरु जी ने पूछा, "क्या यह आम अपने तोड़े हैं?" बुल्ले शाह ने कहा “न तो मैं पेड़ पर चढ़ा और न ही पत्थर फैंके, भला मैं कैसे आम तोड़ सकता हूँ;” बुल्ले शाह को गुरु जी ने ऊपर से नीचे तक देखा और कहा, "अरे तू चोर भी है और चतुर भी;" बुल्ला गुरु जी के चरणों में पड़ गया; बुल्ले ने अपना नाम बताया और कहा मैं रब को पाना चाहता हूँ । साईं जी उस समय पनीरी क्यारी से उखाड़ कर खेत में लगा रहे थे उन्होंने कहा, "बुल्लिहआ रब दा की पौणा। एधरों पुटणा ते ओधर लाउणा" इन सीधे-सादे शब्दों में गुरु ने रूहानियत का सार समझा दिया कि मन को संसार की तरफ से हटाकर परमात्मा की ओर मोड़ देने से रब मिल जाता है । बुल्ले शाह ने यह प्रथम दीक्षा गांठ बांध ली। 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
