Not to take anything away from his talent; he is extremely fortunate to find a group of musicians who allow him to reach out on so many of his drum parts. The results are phenomenal.

I agree. A lot of people in bands dont let drummers really be themselves. Most of the time people are tuck in the formula and "Lessis more" which can be true but in this style of music you gotta let all the musicians breathe and be themselves.

It was a bliss that he is part of Leprous, it was the perfect band for him to make his talent shine, in any other band he would be too limited.

This dude is the fucking apex of progressive drumming right now. The mix of intensity, control, dynamics, creativity and groove is just off the charts. Plus, I love the more direct style this is filmed in. You can really feel the power.

Man, it took me ages to figure out the main rythmic motif in this song. It's such a headfuck, and for the longest time I thought it was in a really weird time signature (like 17/16), but that didn't make any sense when the song goes half-time in the bridge and you can clearly hear Baard playing a constant pulse in one of the symbols without the pattern going out of sync. So the reason it's tricky is because and the beginning of the pattern the burst of 3 snare hits come in on the second 16th note (assuming the song is 180bpm), this makes it hard to find the beat because we're so used to hearing gallops (i'm a guitarist so that's what I call them) beginning on the beat, or on the offbeat. The second gallop in the pattern actually starts on the beat, but barely any of the other hits fall on it. So by the time you get to the end of the pattern, if you've interpreted the beat to be in a different position than it actually is, it's going to sound like the last note (in the guitar) is just held for a random amount of time because the song is in some weird non-isochronal (non-constant pulse) time signature. The threshold of rythmic perception starts getting murky around 16th notes at 160bpm, so hearing a heavily syncopated rhythm like this at 180 is going to feel a bit strange if you don't know exactly where the pulse is before you start listening to it. Can any drummers confirm what I'm saying is correct? The drumming in Leprous is seriously on another level man... so good.

Great analyze man 😅 all creds to einar for creating such a… “weird” rhythmical language. For me is was also the 3 16th notes coming in on the 2nd 16th note after the “2” pulse. As you say, we are so used to “gallops”.

@@BaardKolstad omg, thank you for the reply Baard. I don’t usually notice the drumming when I listen to music, but yours is always outstanding. Has Leprous ever considered making tabs for Sheet Happens publications? There are basically no guitar tabs online for many of your songs, so I’m sure me and thousands of others would buy them all in a heartbeat. Like for example, I just really want to know if the chorus of Mirage is felt in 9/8, or 4/4… haha

If your two pedals are close enought, you can play them both at the same time (tho it seem they are not that close here o_O i'd be curious to see the foot cam). The thing is that he must lead with his left foot and not the right.

If you look at his right knee bouncing, I think you could assume he's playing doubles with only his right foot in the form of a footpedal push/pull technique. Jojo Mayer popularized it, but I had no idea Baard mastered it also.
