BAADER PLANETARIUM FLIP MIRROR II (DIAGONAL FOR TELESCOPES)

This flip mirror is a star diagonal for telescopes that allows the user to attach both an eyepiece and a camera at the same time. This is very useful for the amateur astronomer who might want to take photos of video and also observe visually without having to take the diagonal off every time. It also allows you to focus both at the same focal distance. This is a very useful diagonal and it works great. I had to purchase three different adapters to get it to attach to my telescope and to get the camera and eyepiece to attach but now that I have all the parts I tested it and it works great.

Yay! I knew you would succeed. Sorry it was such a costly accessorie. Your sunset view is beyond gorgeous. I would never tire of that sight. I spent the weekend skiing. Conditions were very good. Tsula, j wish you a merry Christmas and a healthy and prosperous new year. Thanks again for sharing your love of astronomy with us all.

Thanks, Chris. I do get impressive sunsets here with that big wide open view south. It's been snowing here but I haven't made it up to the slopes yet. I"m glad you got some good skiing in. My brother told me that I was supposed to put the 3x barlow next to the telescope instead of where I put it, in order to have both the eyepiece and camera in focus and I think you said that's how you have yours arranged. I will need to tinker with it again and see how to do that. I'm sure I can figure this last bit out but was just too cold to mess with anything once I got the planets focused. Next, I have to figure out how to run an extremely long cable into the garage which is mercifully heated to 45 degrees. Thank you, Chris. Merry Christmas and happy new year to you as well!

I have one of these in my imaging train. Absolutely essential for planetary imaging. Thank you Tsula

I had an Omegon flip mirror in which the mirror is tiny and subpar. It got me by before buying the Baader. If you want great views through the eyepiece as well as using it to place the target on the camera sensor then I'm afraid the old adage " you get what you pay for applies". A planetary camera is far superior to a DSLR due to attaining frame rates in excess of 200 fps allowing you to punch through the seeing conditions.

I have to agree with you on both counts. I finally started using a planetary camera and the results are far superior to anything I could capture with my Mirrorless camera.

That is a brilliant astrophotography accessory! I could use one of those. It would be great for planetary imaging.

Yes, it really helps a lot that I no longer have to take the diagonal off when I want to use the camera. Now I just need to find some kind of extension cable to get that laptop inside the garage.

@@tsulasbigadventuresRe the cable it looks like a USB3 (camera end) to USB A type at PC end … if so you will need a powered extension cable (USB A female one end and USB A male at the other) to run it up to 15 metres distance from your camera USB cable to the laptop USB socket. The data rate for a planetary camera is quite high so the higher speed USB 3 type is used generally these days.😊

@@Seafox0011 Hello and thank you for the information. I decided not to use that camera for planetary imaging because the cable is different from all other cables I normally use. I also found out that I needed to upgrade my laptop to one with USB 3.0, as you said, or I can never achieve focus due to the long delay of data transfer on older ports. Thank you for the helpful suggestions.

What size is your barlow? 2" or 1.25"? If it's 1.25" that would account for the vignetting with a full frame camera. The 2" barlow would eliminate this.

It's a 1.25 barlow. Thank you for the information. I will see if a 2" barlow eliminates the vignetting.

Looks like a great, albeit expensive, little device, Tsula! Isn't there any way to rotate the flip mirror so you don't have to get on a ladder to look through the eyepiece (and then reposition the camera so it's straight)? That cable you were looking at is a USB 3.0 device cable, I think. I couldn't see it very well in the video, but a couple of my USB 3.0 cameras use the same type of connector at the device end. Is there possibly a USB 3.0-USB2.0 adapter you could stick on the USB 3.0 end of it so you could use your 50 ft cable? Boy, do I know what you're talking about in terms of clouds! We've been under clouds for a least a week and there's no reprieve in sight. It's very depressing. The weather is so bad I couldn't even test a manufacturer-recommended fix for YET ANOTHER scope before my 30-day return period was up, so I have to send it back and then wait for them to be back in stock for a replacement. Ugh. I'm REALLY depressed about that. Thanks for another informative video! Try to stay warm...

Thanks, Greg. I think I should be able to rotate it. I'll have to check on that when a) it's warmer, b) the clouds move out. I wondered about somehow attaching an extension cable to the USB 3.0 device cable (if that's what it is. The end that goes into the camera is similar to a USB A except a little bit bigger); otherwise it's just not useable in the winter here. Oh no, I'm sorry you have to return your scope. I hope it clears up for you and me soon! PS: right now it's -1 F! Yikes.

@@tsulasbigadventures Yikes, is right! That is COOOOOOLD!! My astro-gear gets cranky below about 20 deg F, and just plain doesn't work when it's around 5-10 deg F or below. Does the weather curse work in reverse, i.e., if I return equipment will the skies clear? 🤔 Hope you get some (relatively) warmer air and some clear skies soon! If you don't get to make another video before Christmas, I'll wish you a very Happy Holiday now! Enoy it.
