B24 Liberator "Lady Luck"
The “Lady Luck”, a heavy B24 Liberator bomber departured from Morocco on the 19th of November 1944. He took a flak hit in the sky above Vienna. So damaged the crew made it all the way to the alternative airport at the island of Vis. Unfortunately, the runaway was occupied by another damaged airplane so it crushed near the island of Bisevo. 9 crew members lost their lives, just the pilot survived to tell the story. Today the remains of the aircraft rest at a depth of 92-93m. A 20’ bottom time was barely enough to make some footage and take a few pictures. The visibility was not the best but in the end we were lucky not to fight the current, being sheltered by the island of Bisevo from a strong incoming South wind and waves.

This is stunning. My grandfather, HT Mills, was the pilot and only survivor of the Lady Luck. The story of his survival is a family legend. Two other members of his crew escaped the crash with him. HT's back was badly injured so he could only float, but the other two made an attempt to swim to shore. They were never seen again. HT was found the next day in the middle of the sea by some Yugoslavian fisherman. He was taken in by a group of partisans, who eventually carried him up the Yugoslavian peninsula, into Italy and then back down through occupied Italy to the Allied lines. He was missing and presumed dead for more than a month, before showing up in Italy. An absolutely stunning act of bravery that, without, I wouldn't exist. HT spent years after the war trying to get the names of the partisans who helped him, but never could. I have pictures of HT in front of the Lady Luck and of his crew. Amazing.
B-24s were notorious for being hard to escape from, as opposed to the B-17. That might explain why almost all of her crew was lost. May them rest in peace, stunning footage.

Is DPAA aware of this wreck? It would seem that human remains might be recoverable if men went down with Lady Luck and remained in the plane.
