essentially doing the same (applying force across a plane); however, he prefers the hand method. Reason for that is, unlike that jig, hand hammering applies the force randomly accross the surface, thereby greatly reducing the chances of fracturing the hard, cutting steel.

Was he hammering the iron on the anvil because it was warped and he wanted to make it flat?
