When B.B. hits a note and starts playing I can always see myself as a youngster back in Memphis as my parents are entertaining family/friends while playing B.B. Those notes carry powerful memories, histories, and ideas young people. That's what the blues can do.

Couldn't agree more! I personally just absolutely love it when he pulls out his jazz chops! I've always felt B.B's 'jazz licks' never fail to be perfectly executed; always sparingly. Yet always enough to really throw you for a loop, having you on the edge of your seat thinking "He's completely 'painted' himself into a corner!" Which of course, he seemingly-effortlessly phrases his way out of everytime! One of the best of all time, without question...

2:15 - 2:32 is just amazing, ending the "phrase" with a simple yet effective blues lick. This is what it's all about - playing within the chords, coloring them... Patience and feeling is what he shows time and time again throughout his career. He used to throw in all these "fusion" licks in his earlier days - it was still blues music, but with a touch of jazz. Perfect. I adore this man.

After playing for 20 years I’m just getting back into bb. So much to learn and reference from. He’s not playing the most difficult notes either which makes it more fun because it’s encouraging to guitar players. It’s all in his expression and “simple” but elegant phrasing. Everyone needs some bb in their life. All about the feel, expression, passion, style and it’s really not about how many notes you play or not play. It’s HOW you play it! He’s so fun to watch and listen to. If you’re ever stuck or in a plateau playing guitar… watch some bb and you’ll feel better and totally inspired.

He is the lord and master of that instrument. The beauty, the authority, the inevitability, the nuance, the feeling, the depth. There has never been anyone who comes near him and I would be very surprised if there ever is. He is one of a kind. Louis Armstrong has no competitors on pre-bop cornet and trumpet. B. B. king has no competitors on modern blues guitar.

Saw him open for the Stones in'69. He made a bigger impression on me (Tickets $3) Bought several of his best albums. Saw him at Desert Inn in '96 and met him in his dressing room. Signed a copy of his auto biography for me. Been to his club in Memphis. He's a true road musician. Still listening to him. No doubt has had tough times over the years, but spent his whole life doing something he loves. I feel very lucky for a white boy from Colorado. Many more B!

A beautiful film. Thank you for this one. BB's tone is his signature, especially back in the 1970s. He puts every ounce of feeling into every vibrato note...like his life depends on it. Many shredders find his technique boring, but they'll never get the point i.e it's FEELING and NOT speed. This man,as well as all the original Bluesmen like T Bone Walker, has influenced more people than any shredder ever will.

I got interested in electric guitar because of The Beatles. I was blown away by "While My Guitar Gently Weeps' which led me to Eric Clapton. I was reading a Guitar Player interview with Clapton where he said "Why listen to me when you can listen to BB King?". At the time, I didn't know who BB King was but I had seen some of his records in the record shop so I went out and bought them. That was probably the most significant moment in my fifty year career as a working guitarist. It set me on a path where I was able to find my own voice on the instrument.

How many people can say that they made life better for others? Great teachers, great scientists, great inventors, and perhaps the best of all...great artists. Nietzsche once opined that because Montaigne had written, the collective joy of humanity had been greatly increased. Well, because BB king played Lucille, the collective joy of being a human being has been greatly increased. Thanks BB and viva Montaigne!

I remember where I was and how I felt when he passed. I was a senior in high school in computer science class when I got the news. That whole week was a total shit show for me as I just got into my worship group at church and started filling up on a bunch of gospel, jazz, blues, and RnB for inspiration. While all my friends were focused on shredding and listening to metalcore and pop punk, I was hooked on BB King.

What's so remarkable about B.B. King is his ability to voice his guitar exactly like a singer. I think he cared more about that than the scales, the technicals or any "shredding" ... he wanted to give his instrument a voice. Some of the best blues players of today go back to B.B. for that very reason. He brought to blues guitar what ever real blues guitarist wants to bring in their own way. Some do it better than others.
