    Over 60 years ago, B52s would occasionally do touch and goes at Fallon NAS, now the Top Gun school. They would circle the valley at low altitude, hitting the runway maybe every 15 minutes. My grandmother and I would drive out and park on a friend's property immediately west of the end of the 12,000 foot runway, just to experience the racket as they went over at no more than 200 feet altitude on takeoff power. Not for the faint of heart....I wish I could remember the local livestock's reaction.

    The big Boeing B-52 Stratofortress is so impressive to watch taking off and landing as well as in flight. I recall reading many years ago that the pilots nicknamed them the “BUF” for the “Big Ugly Fellow”. In my eyes though, they are a thing of beauty and power.

    Just think, if the Wright Bros. could see this, today, they would likely fall over. Their project has shot us into the futuristic way we now travel. How on EARTH could this weight be thrust into the skies? It seems impossible. Remarkable, truly.

They first flew in April of 1952, just four months before I was born. I don't know when the first B-52 was actually built, but they first flew in April of 1952, and I was born in August, 1952. The planes are much older than the people who fly them.

    Those cobras were first used in Vietnam. For it's time they were futuristic.

    Burt Vincent No we were sent on an emergency round the clock airlift from Dover AFB - Military Airlift Command to Barksdale AFB which was close to the Bell Helicopter manufacturing facility in Texas. C-141s, 133s, 124s were used to transport them to NAM. After the Cobras were done we were extended to fly out a million tons of ammunition as I recall. I was an avionics tech supporting all the transports which came from all over the states. On the flight line all day by the SAC 52s, 135s and the U-2s. Elephant walks and U-2 Takeoffs up close. 💯👌. No cameras allowed though. Busy times🗽🇺🇸

    @@eckhal2 Ok. I was a Bomb Nav tech, avionics 68 -72. TDY to Anderson and Kadena then PCS to U Tapao Thailand becoming a hard hat. I heard of an MG midget brought to the U.S from England many years back in the belly of a B52 but that was the only time on (or off) record they carried anything other than bombs.😊

    @@eckhal2 I guess they carried missiles internal and x15s and a few other things under their wings so I will correct my statement.

    Why do these aircrafts require parachutes? Dont they have reverse thrust mechanism?

  • @humblehombre9904
    @humblehombre99042 жыл бұрын

    Are reverse thrusters deployed when landing this bird, or is it all slowed by parachute and friction brakes? If so, is it the usual reverse thrust or something special for the Fortress?
