I think this guy was naive to the music industry and thought it was just completely unorganised and he could just make music and it would magically be heard by millions of people

I hear it but it’s just business logic 101: Company invest in product (artist - Record deal). Company wants a return in profit on their investment. Company therefore pays money to market said product to the public via media outlets. It’s funny when I hear the whole industry plant thing. Bouncer literally did this with DigDat, he paid and was helped by social media platforms & friends in the industry to market digdat to the masses & boom he had a hit. (Yes DigDat makes good music, but that was a very sharp trajectory similar to that of said industry plants)
