Azure VM Backup and Restore Step by Step

Azure vm backup and restore step by step
Take Virtual Machine Backup and Restore to Same VM and NEW VM and Download Disk and attach it
Azure Backup provides independent and isolated backups to guard against unintended destruction of the data on your VMs. Backups are stored in a Recovery Services vault with built-in management of recovery points. Configuration and scaling are simple, backups are optimized, and you can easily restore as needed.
As part of the backup process, a snapshot is taken, and the data is transferred to the Recovery Services vault with no impact on production workloads. The snapshot provides different levels of consistency, as described here.
Azure Backup also has specialized offerings for database workloads like SQL Server and SAP HANA that are workload-aware, offer 15 minute RPO (recovery point objective), and allow backup and restore of individual databases.

    I have created an azure VM snapshot for OS disk, before I install the OS updates for instant restore if in case any issues with updates, Now the VM has no issues with the OS updates, So now I want to delete the snapshot that I took before patch, So deleting this snapshot will effect source disk? and what are the things i have to take care before delete the snapshot?

    Hi, if I wanted to spin the backup just to test its validity\works without affecting the current VM, what's the best way to do this?

  • @PaddyMaddy26

    @PaddyMaddy26

    To test the validity of a backup, you can spin up a new VM from the backup file. This will not affect the current VM.

    Yes, you can copy the snapshot manually to the storage account. You will need to use the Azure CLI or PowerShell to copy the snapshot. Once the snapshot is copied, you can use the Azure Portal to restore the VM in a different region. Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any more questions.
