AZ Downtown Peregrine Falcons ~ Goodbye Rocky; Last Moments with Dad 6.4.16

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Today around 8 am, the baby eyas, nicknamed Rocky by many viewers, fell off the ledge and tumbled 8 stories. AZGFD rescued & examined him and returned him to the nest. This video starts with him being returned and Dad coming in and acting very protective of his baby. Dad never left his side and was seen covering him with his body at times for 3 hours. Good bye Rocky, we love you and miss you little one. He was 27 days old. Soar high and free.

Even if birds can't cry and tear, you can still see how stressed he is, and the dad's face was so heartbreaking to watch at the end, especially seeing him trying to keep Rocky moving ;-; at least Rocky wasn't alone in his last moments. I pray for peace on his soul; his passing was not in vain with all the love he got. I hope the falcon couple comes back to try again

There is something special about these Falcons. I've watched so many different birds, hawks, eagles, and none of them I've seen were as attentive as these particular Falcons. There are videos of eaglets, owls, and others where their chicks would venture off too close to the edge and they do nothing and have watched their chicks fall out. Or when their chicks have gone just outside of the "bowl" and they ignore them at feeding times etc.. However, I have seen many videos of these Falcons being so careful caring for their babies and you can see the stress and worry in them when the chick almost falls and they actually do something about it and have dragged their chicks right back to safety, or helped one that has fallen and cannot get up on it s own. I've seen them actually pay attention to what chicks have eaten and which not and make sure to feed that chick the next time. I'm not saying other birds or birds of prey dont care for their offspring well. They are all fantastic parents. But I see something more here. Idk.

Hello Kat and I agree with you! These Falcon parents really do have a more hands on approach than other raptors do. I know with this season with Rocky - both the male and female were extra attentive with their chick and Dad actually rescued him when he flipped over on his back and could not get up! In fact, that clip from my video is being used in educational videos on the Peregrine Falcons to teach others about their behaviors and in raising of their young. They also adapt to their circumstances so they continue to thrive in adverse situations.

I too watched Rocky from Australia. When he had the splayed legs, I thought Mum and Dad might have abandoned him, but no, they were fabulous. When he got used to his splints, he was such a character, but I'll never forget the whole night he spent on the ledge. I "listened" all night until morning came to make sure he was still there. Yes, of course he was trying to get some cool air...way too hot for a baby!! Poor Dad was so hot too. You can't tell me that they don't have emotions! This is the saddest thing I've ever seen in 4 yrs of watching raptors nests, yet so important to show that animals surely do feel and show grief. I downloaded this and watch when I'm feeling down, so I have an excuse for my tears. Poor Dad has a bad eye and I just hope they come back next year. Thanks Lady Hawk....I love all the videos you do.

This wee baby was quite pathetic after birth when it was apparent that he kept falling over and the parents fed him whilst he just lay on his stomach. Dad came to the rescue a couple of times when he fell onto his back and couldn''t get up by himself.....video is here somewhere. He was such a brave little bird but my personal belief is that despite the fall, he died of heat exhaustion. It was just SO hot in Phoenix and Rocky was on the ledge to try and be cooler. Anyway, in his short life, he had so many people all over the world in love with him.

  • @ladyhawk

Hi Jeanette - I apologize I did not see your earlier comment. No we are not fb friends but if I see you around the groups I will send you a request. I agree with you that heat exhaustion had to have played a significant role in his passing. The temperature that entire weekend was 116-118 degrees and overnight lows did not dip below 90. It was miserable. I believe he went out on the ledge because it was so hot and of course, being so young, he slipped off and fell. Rocky was one of the bravest little falcons I have watched from all of his difficulties he overcame them one by one. He touched thousands with his short life and I for one will never forget him. RIP Rocky. ♥♥♥

Hi SuperinuxnOva- the Peregrine falcons are amazing birds. Rocky was one of a kind - very special and it was the most tragic death I have witnessed. I created a memorial for him downtown and to this day, still honor and remember him. The parents chose to not use this nest box this season. Perhaps they have found a safer nest - we don't know but the AZ fish and game did make improvements to the nest box and added air conditioning to help with the horrible heat in the summer. Let's hope to see them back next March.

Take some comfort in believing that your love, even for "just" a baby bird, counts far more than you can know. I'm reminded of a scene from the movie "Nell" where she says something like: "Some people know (understand) big things, but I know small things". The psychologists and social workers who found Nell and had plans to "improve" her, and change her life, could never know the intrinsic value of her life as she lived it in her isolated forest surroundings. Little things that touch our hearts are a "knowing", and a loving, and a divine embracing that is mostly unknown to the "larger" materialists of this world.

It must have been too hot, as others have said. I don’t see the gnats, that kill some eaglet chicks in the summer. Just too hot. The folks who are in charge of the nest should add a thermometer to the back wall for the cam to see. Also find a way to shower the nest with cool water to cool it off; resembling rain. That would keep the chicks alive. Cities get so hot with all the concrete and no water raining on nest means no relief from the heat. Put a sprinkler on a timer. Even adjust the timer as needed.

Rocky fell from the ledge in the early morning and the AZ Game and Fish Department found him and rescued him. They put him back in the nest and he died a couple hours later. They should have taken him to a rehab center for xrays and to look for internal injuries but they did not. They did a visual exam and gave him food as the temperatures were very hot around 118 degrees that day. I think the stress from the fall, dehydration, the heat possibly internal injuries caused his death. I believe the AZGFD made a huge mistake by not taking him to be checked out.

I'm confused by the actions of the adult. It was apparent, at least to me, he was mounting the chick in the final few seconds of the video. The chick laid down motionless in the submissive position as they do when a nest is attacked or an intruder arrives. I can only speculate it was suffering from some illness due to the open mouth breathing (it didn't appear to be gullar fluttering as you would expect with the heat). Is it common for adult male hawks/eagles/falcons to mount other birds, including their own? nestlings, for some type of dominant assertion?

Does anyone know if the Dad was aware that the baby had fallen out of the nest? Does anyone know why he was returned to the nest if he was not going to make it? Was it so that the parents could know what happened to him? Was he given pain medication before being returned to the nest I'm wondering? That would have been the most humane thing to do for the poor baby if they were going to return him to the nest box to die.Does anyone know the answers to my questions? I just saw this video even though its a few yrs. later, I'd like to the thinking/reasoning behind what was done and why after he fell out. I see this happen to so many falcon nests. When manmade boxes are put out for their use, they ought to at least put a bar or two across the front to help hold them in the box. Maybe it would help some.

Also if people can reach the nest to put the baby back in why couldn't someone put a water dish in there for them?

The young eyases do not drink water. They receive all the moisture they need from the food they eat. They did give him some food before placing him back in the nest box.

Rocky fell off the ledge of the building. They did find him and checked him out and put back in the nest box but he passed away a few hours later. The heat was unbearable 118 degrees F in AZ and with the stress and shock of the fall and maybe internal injuries they did not see caused him to pass away. It was truly a tragic moment. RIP little one!

I think the reaction from the parent was that it was overheating, though that could be from the stress of not knowing what is wrong with it's child. Remember we tend to anthropomorphize animals' actions in an attempt to understand them, when the fact is that they are not us and we not them.

Hi John it was over 118 degrees this day in Phoenix -he climbed on the ledge to escape the heat in the nest box which was probably even hotter. Then he slipped off the ledge. :(
