Ayutthaya, officially known as Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, is a city in Thailand that was the capital of the Ayutthaya Kingdom and is now the capital of the Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province. The city is located on an island at the confluence of the Chao Phraya and Pa Sak rivers. It is renowned for its historical significance, having been founded in 1351 by King U Thong to escape a smallpox outbreak. Ayutthaya was the second Siamese capital after Sukhothai and became a significant center of politics, culture, and trade, often referred to as the "Venice of the East" due to its elaborate network of canals and its vibrant, cosmopolitan nature.
By the year 1700, Ayutthaya had grown to be one of the world's largest cities, with a population that may have reached 1,000,000 people. The city's prosperity came to a tragic end in 1767 when it was destroyed by the Burmese army, leading to the collapse of the kingdom. Today, the ruins of the old city are preserved in the Ayutthaya Historical Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that offers a glimpse into the city's past splendor with its towering prang (reliquary towers) and vast monasteries.
Ayutthaya's historical significance is further highlighted by its rich architectural and cultural heritage, with notable sites including Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon, Wat Mahathat, and Wat Chai Watthanaram. The city also serves as a living museum, showcasing the blend of Siamese, Khmer, Sri Lankan, and Persian influences that have shaped its development over centuries. Despite the destruction, modern Ayutthaya has been rebuilt a few kilometers to the east of the old city and continues to be an important part of Thailand's cultural landscape, attracting both local and international tourists eager to explore its historic ruins and learn about its past.
