    Nakajima is smoother in his steering . The key detail is in turn 3 where senna isn't doing the downshift. If you look carefully in turn 1 and 2 Senna is struggling a lot more in his steering than Nakijima. Pretty shure this is due to cold tyres. It's second lap for senna. Engine, tyres and gearing aren't quite ready for a hot lap. Also senna is avoiding 5th gear after he is misshifting on the straight. Great job from both. Nakijima is the winner. However I strongly believe that sennas care isn't quite ready for hot lapping. Senna is breaking much smoother and later than nakajima. This is indicating a possible faster lap. Smooth steering is a sign of not being at the traction Limit. Great footage!! Thank you for that!!

    Also notice Senna's famous style of pumping the accelerator in the middle of the corner. The extra steering correcting was part of his style too. As a driver used to drive in the limit, he is used to correcting the car route mid corner. Schumacher also had a similar steering style. Such style can be great for pushing for faster laps, either in the qualify or in the race. These drivers have an extra to give. Senna was also famous to be most adaptive driver of all. He could use any setup and bring the best of the car. Jo Ramirez said that sometimes Senna was so sure he could beat Prost, that he would copy his setup to avoid "surprises". He said Senna could change his driving style whenever needed.

    Senna casualy drives just a little slower as the main test driver. Speaks volumes. He was in a league of his own. Together with Schumacher. These two are my all time favorites.

    There is one minor detail I think everyone is missing here, Senna it's not trying to beat a lap record, he is just having fun testing a car.

    Hmm... Is Senna him self said that? Senna was a very competitive person, so it's hard to believe that he was not trying to beat everyone everywhere every time. And Nakajima looks more relaxed. So, I will disagree with you :)

    @@danvorobiov I think that nobody would literally be mad enough to rigorously floor an unfamiliar car right away in order to break non-existent 'records' in front of many people and journalists when you are only invited to test-drive a car. Senna was very competitive, I agree, but that was in F1. And things, including testing, conditioning, etc. are very different there. Thus, I don't think that either of these guys were flooring the car as if they were setting a record or something.

    Its been noted by Barichello that Nakajima was the driver involved in development of the NSX. Senna gave his 2 cents here and there.

    just remember, Nakajima help build the car while Senna - an F1 racer - was invited to test out the NSX "just for fun" and nailed it the first time he drove it wearing casual clothing. Senna isn't even trying, he's just enjoying the car.

    To be honest I'm sure Senna did a only a few quick laps for the press, but on the other hand Nakajima had more practice with the car (maybe better tires also). But no denying, Senna was much slower. Edit: Amazing footage thanks !

    He wasn't that much slower, and his goal was not really to break records but to test the car, feel it. Sometimes to give good criticism you have to think a bit on what's happening with the car and when you think too much you can be slower.

    Great drive by both drivers. Nakajima is more used to testing production cars plus im sure he had more time knowing the limits of the NSX. Senna no doubt if he was getting paid to make the car faster would be a different story, he is probably driving at 60%.

    I believe that Nakajima was responsible for most of the testing doing many laps on the car and the track. Senna did a few laps just for the press but he did complain that the car was fragile. As a result, Honda engineers increased the rigidity of the car by about 50% apparently. As much as I love Senna, I will grudgingly admit that Nakajima was much faster in his lap. Some people are saying here that the tires weren’t warm enough for Senna and it might be true, but I doubt it would make a 5 second difference to keep up with the Japanese driver. Some said that Senna keeps fighting with the wheel while Nakajima was very smooth. Senna always drives like this and you can see it on the onboard videos in F1. He’s really pushing the car to its limits and if you’ve ever done sporty driving in the rain, you will do the same thing. Even in a straight line, you can see his car dancing. His throttle prodding technique was a mystery to me, I didn’t really understand why he didn’t despite claims that he was using it to keep the turbo spooled. I tried this technique on slightly wet country roads. After every prod, you feel the car losing traction so you release and come back. You repeat until you feel some grip and floor the accelerator. The interesting thing I noticed is that it didn’t affect the balance of the car at all, I can’t understand why. Now with traction control and electronic stability in modern road cars, it’s mostly obsolete since the computers calculate grip and loss of traction 50 times a second. I won’t deny however, that it’s a really fun and engaging. With someone of Senna's calibre, he probably would make it work anyways. You do need a manual transmission for this as you can keep the car in gear and control the throttle better. I tried it in an automatic and it doesn’t work at all. When you release the throttle, the transmission really wants to up shift and torque multiplication made the responsiveness really slushy. Even the mode where you can select the gears doesn’t provide much engine braking or responsiveness. The car though is incredibly fast and nice to see the speedometer all the way to the right. I can’t believe that V6 Honda managed to be faster than the (flat?) V12 Ferrari Testarossa. The car is very analog with a pure driving experience. It reminds of my first car, a 2005 Honda Civic, which didn’t even have ABS. The 117 horsepower engine couldn’t really make the car move though. Also, Nakajima heal-toe rev-matching is much cleaner and it was amazing that he would double-clutch (pay close attention to foot in the clutch) while heal-toeing. Though he keeps his hand on the shifter (which you should not do because it may wear the synchros) and steers with only one arm which means less car control. Finally, both were wearing loafers which are actually good driving shoes. When I wear thick shoes, I remove them and drive barefooted because I can feel the pedals. They clearly have different tastes when it comes to colour!

    There's really no definite reason as to why Senna blips his throttle, he apparently started doing this ever since he was karting, it might just be a habit that became very useful when the turbo-runners came to F1. It might be his method of keeping the revs up to get an optimal exit out of the corner, it might be so that he can stamp on the throttle much earlier. Apparently his blipping was so quick that the suspension wouldn't even have time to react and that's why he doesn't lose traction on most occasions.

    I think him stabbing the throttle is his own form of traction control feeling the grip levels.( But that's just my theory) I could be completely wrong ! I wouldn't look to much into Nakajima being faster this lap. In the lotus 99 t senna was often 2-3 seconds faster. I think him being slower here could also be because he's having fun with a not so great handling car. I know when I've done track day's I would always start the lap looking to do a pb, but if halfway through it I made a mistake, got to sideways, lost time, and I new my pb was gone, I'd just let it hang out sideways extra second or so, partly in frustration partly in enjoyment. Then last corner coming back on to finish straight I'd get serious and start again.

    The reason basically why he did that I read it long ago was basically to keep the weight at the rear and find when he could go full throttle. Trial and Error basically.

    @@user-kd6yv5kp6u In F1 car Senna was better. In this video - Nakajima was faster in first turn, then they was equal and in the last turn Senna was faster. It's easy to see on the video. It's not fair, to say "if". "IF" Tommy Byrne was able to make his way into F1, he will beat Ayrton, because he beat him many times before in Formula Ford... But I can't say it like that, there is no "if".

    @@danvorobiov In the first straight Ayrton lost some time not because he missed the gear but because he used an unusual technique to change gears, it was not a mistake. He has done it for several and to gain confidence, as a result he has wasted time.

    I’m thinking Senna wasn’t necessarily driving for a fastest lap, rather he saw his job as pushing/testing the car’s limits and safety in corners, how it would react to different steering and throttle inputs and, yes, maybe even intentionally making mistakes. He knew the NSX was a high performance passenger car and that the amateurs driving it were going to make mistakes all the time. His feedback to Honda engineers would help them in tuning the engine and chassis accordingly. I know that’s what Honda test drivers are for, but if you listen to his post test drive comments, he mentions fast/fun but safe and predictable. So he clearly had this in mind while he was driving.

    I'm not japanese, but at 1:37 you can see "A・セナ" written on the screen, with a time of 1:34.48 on an NSX-R. By using Google translation, I found out that Senna in japanese is written "セナ", so I guess that this 1:34.48 must be Senna's time. (just a repost of my answer of a comment, I just hope some japanese speaker can confirm what I'm saying).

    Two good drivers, but we need to remenber the project of this car was fixed by Senna. Nakajima was helping in the project, but Senna was invited to test the car and found many troubles.

    I think the big difference is how smoothest is Nakajima compared to Senna. Senna had a agressive style and i think this driving style did not fit so well in the nsx.

    Yes, I know that. And I know that Senna was involved in to NSX development. And he has NSX as one of his personal cars. And he was more successful (probably better) as racing driver.

    @@danvorobiov as far as i know, he had 2 NSX. One that everyone knows, another in Portugal. Senna gave his opinion publicly in 1989 when he drove the prototype in Suzuka. At that time his dedication was F1 24h/7days. I have no knowledge of him wasting too much time with the car's development. That was Nakajima's job.

    Hmm... I don't think so. Nakajima looks more relaxed, he drove almost half a lap with one hand on the wheel and he was ahead most of the lap. Senna, at the same time, looks like he was trying a lot more, doing he's "magic" on the pedals.... And don't forget - Senna was involved in development of NSX, he knew that car very well.

    The issue is not Ayrton Senna vs Satoru Nakajima because there is no comparison between the two. We are talking about Senna (legend) one of the best drivers in the world if not the best that ever existed. I see the video more as a tribute to even the shoes and cameras are similar.

    nakajima was only faster because Ayrton missed the gear in the straight before 130r the car is a left hand drive, Senna is a Brazilian not Japanese

For many years people (and me as well) was enjoying seeing Senna doing that lap in the NSX in those shoes... But, as we know now, Senna was not alone there - another F1 driver drove the same car, at the same day, at the same track, in the almost the same shoes. And he was not slower than Senna. And his lap looks not so dramatic, as Senna's lap. It, rather, looks relaxing and smooth... but fast.

    Both are the great driver and pointless to compare. Nakajima drive on this circuit more where Senna is just promoting the new NSX and perhaps he just drive once or twice the NSX. It is same result that if Nakajima will drive slower than Senna if both driving F1 car..

    I don't really know. But, I think he did it for very smooth and precise speed and/or weight balance adjustment (less weight transfer, as a result of less braking). 1) Maybe he start braking little bit too early (which is easy to do at the end of a long straight) and he decided to "push the car forward" slightly. 2) Or maybe he achieving better weight balance that way, which is very important for entering very fast left corner. It is almost like operating gas and brake with both feets at the same time, rally drivers use something like that often on slippery surface - kzread.info/dash/bejne/nKSVtbaChsiYoJs.html

    I don't think neither drivers were really pushing here. If you ask any F1 driver they will say this is very slow.

    Maybe. What is interesting about it - for many years people (me including) was able to see only Senna's lap and that onboard becomes legendary. But now we can see how really fast (or not) it was in comparison to Nakajima's lap.

    I'm not japanese, but at 1:37 you can see "A・セナ" written on the screen, with a time on the NSX-R. By using Google translation, I found out that Senna in japanese is written "セナ", so I guess that this 1:34.48 must be Senna's time.

    Do not argue with the Orthodox Senna , it is not surprising even in the Lotus, the Brazilian had preferences since the days of De Angelis . Senna is too much hyped as a driver, I'm putting it mildly . By the way, I understand they have the same tires or not.

    @@oswaldomorales8924 Double clutching was required in very old cars that didn't have a synchromesh gearbox. Also some (older) racecars use a non-synchromesh transmission too, but I believe you can also downshift without double clutching but only with a throttle blip (heel and toe, like Ayrton is doing). This is done to match the revs enough so that the gears line up when you release the clutch. A good example would be Ferrari F40 LM (only the LM version had a non synchromesh gearbox), there is a famous video on KZread of an ex F1 racer driving the car and double clutching every downshift, while there are other videos of this car being driven on track and the driver only blips the throttle on the downshift without double clutching. These days (and in fact back when this video was made, in a modern road car) double clutching is more of an art than something required. However, heel and toe (rev matching) on downshifts is very much useful to this day on manual transmission, makes a smoother downshift without distabilizing the car. On any manual car with high horsepower it is actually the safest way to downshift. EDIT: Also forgot the other important thing with non synchromesh gearbox (also known as straight cut gearbox) - you can upshift without using the clutch, only letting off the throttle, when you do this in the right moment. You can hear and see that in both videos.

    Senna first time driving the NSX, first lap. vs Nakajima who has driven thousands of miles in NSX cars. He had experience of on the limit spins, break lock ups, and poor laps. Senna with thousands of laps experience would of been full seconds ahead of anything Nakajima could do.

    @@danvorobiov Grippier tyre gives ability to tackle turn faster and accelerate faster, difference, what allows to make lower lap times easier, like soft vs hard compound. I dont have data to tell it was like this in this case. I was just explaining what grigoris was trying to tell. No offence mate

    I'm sorry anything past arrington center or in a video like this is strictly another human characteristic of being a mimic you can't mimic the great and call yourself greater however you can compare you can utilize it for documentation purposes but this guy had the initiative on his own and he drove in circumstances even though he was hurt inside and you can see it on his arm he still raced and he died so quite frankly this is a tragedy I'm tired of looking at this guy died way too ahead of his time and all the sudden because of these deaths risen Burger center these cars are literally probably 50% easier to drive within 150 laps of the racing than the previous cars that obviously contributed to the deaths of these wonderful drivers that were pure and not pretentious at all so don't ever compare ever the man was his own man he created his own f****** blueprint his own geometry and he f****** interested in himself in the mechanical aspect of the car and drove the piss out of it in a way where he one not from shear talent from from sheer feeling of what was going on with the car both in theory and obviously Hands-On which is actual being in the car racing it so you can suck it whoever f****** reads the s*** and wants to talk s*** or something cuz I can guarantee you if I had the resources at the point of my life right now I would be alone meditating everyday with nobody to hype me up or boost me and I would win races cuz majority of people are pretentious nowadays they want people to like them they want people to be around them but you know what that is you little girls that's distraction it's distractionful it really matters and guess what I know what really matters and I get everything on my life to know in my heart that if I was given the financial resources I would do my best to duplicate center in a way which would be fit of what he would expect of himself so suck it suck it suck it all pride aside if you got anything to f****** say that stupid because I feel wonderful today that I got another day of life unfortunately on my day off to work on my Honda and not because I want to put stupid rims or stupid springs or stand by my car so the girls can go oh and ah no just so I can sit in my car and everything works and it works to my specification and again negativity can suck a dick positivity mucho Bueno

    Senna drives the NSX better. You can see at the end of the lap that he recovered all the gap between him and Nakajima. Therefore, the faster driver is Senna.

    Respect to Nakajima, almost all the comment i read was senna has less lap xperience than nakajima which is quite wrong...these NSX in the video is a test car means they only have equal time to drive it...both driver was just test it and make an advise for the engineers...Senna pointed the rigid body of these.

    Nakajima was fast in the rainy F1 race. Because he has a driving technique. He was slow in dry F1 races because he had no strength in his arms. It's no wonder it can be faster than senna if it's not an F1 car. Once in a while.

    Senna grew up in wet monsoon conditions racing carts. He just was a natural. The Japanese fap about for days, weeks months trying to look busy having meetings for meeting’s sakes. But they drill one particular person to either be the skilled pianist of driver when it comes to public show. Senna was not public show.

    In 1990 the tyres were far inferior to tyres from 2023. If Nakajima drove a 1990 NSX with 1990 rated tyres he would be slower. He only gets close to Senna because he drives the 1990 car, on more modern, advanced tyres, that would give him an extra 4 seconds a lap.
