85db is the actionable level chronic exposure. Keep in mind I worked in an environment where I was exposed to 85 to 95 db 4 to 6 hrs a day for six months w/out hearing protection. I had to use a radio for communication and couldn’t function with ear pro . I have 50% hearing loss. Hearing aids do not restore your hearing beyond perhaps 75%. Don’t let a few hundred dollars stand between you and your granddaughters voice.

Had my axil GS extremes since March 2021. These are the usb rechargeables. And I must say I love the Bluetooth feature and I love the feature that you can turn on for enhanced hearing that also includes hearing protection. So far I've used these pistol caliber handguns, standard Battle bore , some of which were full Auto.. to a Barrett. They've never failed me. When not on the range I'm using them in the gym or when I'm mowing. I love them. actually have another set on order as a backup

i bought a set of the GS digitals a few years ago, and i loved them so much. they are an all day ear pro, and they stay on no matter what you're doing. i usually got three full days out of a battery set. one time we were shooting during some storms and they got wet, and they died. i sent them back to Axil and they repaired them, but they never were the same, with buzzing, and volume issues.

So far I do like the Axil's. Thank you for mentioning that Axil specializes in hearing aids. For the price point the GS Extremes arepretty good. I would love to get into the Digital, but then I would have less money for ammo... I value you knowledge and experience and appreciate it. Look forward to more tutelage from you.

Thanks for the info X-Ring. I have been looking for something like this for a while now. I have used the radians for years but like you said over the head muffs are prone to be bumped by the rifle as well as ungodly hot in the southern sun. Good luck this weekend.

I've been wondering about these I like low profile ear pro and I've tried some of these kinds of ear pro from other manufacturers and hated them. Like you mentioned a lot of the time with muffs when you get a cheek weld on your stock you can break the seal on them or if you're wearing eye pro they'll make it even easier to break the seal on muffs as well... I have some of the custom molded ear plugs I got from working in the refineries but like you said your ear will be raw or feel bruised if you're wearing them for a prolonged period... If these hold up they'll be worth every penny. Great video as always keepem coming brother!!!

I’ve been using the axial gs extreme for several months which is rechargeable but does have a cord between the buds. 6 hours is max I’ve used but have same foam and silicon plugs as digital for 1/2 the cost and think same noise rating. Just have to watch and not get beside a rude unsuppressed brake shooter.

I had custom molded ear plugs made and they left a channel for me to plug my Walker's Silencers into. I feel I get the best of both worlds. Really great custom molded plugs that really cut down the sound and the electronics to allow me to hear what is going on around me.

Good information. I come from a industrial work for over thirty years. I wore hearing protection but still have tinnitus. I wore the earplugs of all types including earmuffs. At 65 I have I have constant ringing 24 hrs a day. Fixing to try a hearing aid that may give me some relief.

Ray, love your review on these. Battery life make them a no go for me, as I don't always shoot everyday. If I was in matches, like you and many others, I can see their merit. I currently use MSA Supreme Pro-X as recommended to my by my SOF step grandson. But AXIL's are a another tool in the tool box.for the right application.

I also ran sordin's, about 9 months ago I picked up a set of OTTO noise barriers. They come with a protective case that doubles as a portable recharging station. 3 two day PRS matches and 4 one day regional matches I'm happy to say the charge left remaining after 9 hours of straight use is still showing 60% when I place them back in the case. GUNS and TACTICS channel has a good review on them should you want more info. Overall I've been very happy with them.

I have both ( the Extreme corded and the in-ears) reviewed. I currently run the rechargeable corded as they’re easy to use, less likely to lose and I find the amplified sound clearer. The in-ear sound a lot ‘tinnier’ to me.

I have never used Axil brand but I DO carry 2 sets of Walkers 2.0. They each came with a little baggie of all the different sized inserts. They also each came with a charging/recharging carrying case that will recharge both earbuds several times over on just 1 charge of the carrying case. Each carrying case can be recharged fairly quickly off of a phone sized solar charger, or recharged from even your phone. I don't remember if I got both sets when they were on sale but I got both sets of the Walker 2.0's with everything that I've described above for less than $400. My ONLY complaint is that you still cannot tell what direction any sound is coming from just like when using the battery powered muffs. 👍😇✌

You can get cutom molded inserts for pretty much any in-ear type hearing protection and I'd highly recommend them. You get something that's doesn't feel like it's trying to expand your ear canal, you can pop them in and out, and they're >30dB of attenuation. With good electronics like these or something like etymotic gunsports you can get normal level or even enhanced conversation, then attenuation for any blast. They run a few hundred bucks because you need them custom fitted then made but it's well worth the reduction in daily annoyance.

I have the GS Extremes I thought that was a lot to pay ($140) I have two complaints with them, 1. if ears get sweaty I was having all kinds of issues as far as sound etc and 2. the cord that is attached which has controls for each ear they send a piece that is supposed to hold it together basically junk does not hold it properly so now you have to find the best position so its not snagging

  • @Baldcurious

If they made the case to charge the hearing protection, like so many are today, that would negate the reason for using disposable batteries. Agree they are too expensive. I tried some of their stuff and was not pleased. Ended up sending them back. Am currently using the Walker Silencer, which work better than the Axil and are cheaper, but I'm still not extremely happy with them. They sometime cut too much to heat voices, but still leave shots uncomfortably loud at times.

I’ve been looking at GS Extreme set after coming across them. They are rechargeable and Bluetooth, seem to have pretty good reviews with some not so good like anything else, fall into the $130-$200 price range depending if they’re on sale. I’d be interested to hear your take on them Ray in a review, if you get the opportunity to get your hands on a set because I love your honesty and how you review products.

Thanks for the review. Glad to see these electronic in-ear devices mature. Sordins, or any of the other “tactical” ear pro (Comtac, Ops-Core) are not enough for unsuppressed weapons, especially with brakes. The NRR on your Sordins is only 19 db per Sordin’s website. The primary focus of these devices is communication and use with suppressed weapons. When I run my Sordins, I use in-ear passive plugs as well. I’m hoping that this new generation of electronic in-ears can work for both ambient sounds (for environmental sound and commands), plus offer 30 db noise reduction like passive plugs. Very promising!!

I RO'd the Kestrel Fall Classic down at Altus Shooting this last October, and I'll tell you, the one time you don't double-up on hearing protection is the one time when a guy comes up running a 300-Win-Mag with a Hellfire brake. Jesus. You'd think the wrath of God was coming out the end of his barrel. Always double-up on hearing if you're RO-ing.
