Neither, the hammer, no armor can truly protect against a hammer, sword if you stab can get stuck, axe can get stuck aswell, thus the hammer that can make someone collapse is the best

Not true i do axe sports theres pleanty of ways to make them safe axe throwing has as much danger as archery your releasing a potentally lethal projectile hell have you seen javling they have people in the feild where the javlin is thrown and its hit people

Not to be that guy, but I think the corrext term is shaft. Hilt is more of a sword thing. That being said, shaft can also be used for poles, so maybe there's a better term for an axe handle. Maybe just handle.

As a medieval peasant, I would prefer the axe since I probably couldn't afford a sword.

I like the inherent intimidation factor of the axe, plus the weighty impact is pretty nice to have as well. That and an axe doesn't really need to be particularly sharp to be useful.

The best weapon is the one that best fits the kind of damage you're trying to do and the armor your opponent is wearing. The only (sort of) universally best weapon is a polearm, or a gun.

Axe also much older than sword. And they're cheaper and not too complicated to make. I think? I know nothing about blacksmithing tho 😢

I remember going to a medieval themed night at a bar, and before a band played they had a medieval fight with axes and in armour. Coolest shit I've ever seen.

The solution is simple. Make the guard an axe head, and use a locking mechanism to either keep the sword in the seathe to use the sheathe as a handle, or stick the sheathe on a pommel to make a spear.

Where do you get your swords? Is there anywhere in the UK i can get stuff like that, cause they’re cool

The nice thing about using an axe as a main close combat weapon is that it can also be used as a tool for felling small trees (or big ones depending on the axe)

I love axes more than swords personally and i know that even my buddies that would fight in full plate got nervous around axes even when blunted. It not that you can smash through the plates or anything its the fear of getting hit in one places like joints that arent as well protected because even a blunt axe can crack bones if you are hit hard enough

At the end of the day, it would come down to who was more skilled and who wanted to live more. Love your videos🤙

None is better only works if you don’t want to anger anyone. A real comparison always happens inside a scenario, in which you can get a clear winner.

Keep in mind that smashing an axe into hardened steel plate is going to generate stress risers and break your blade after a couple of swings. Unless you're fighting with a splitting maul made of mild steel, your best bet against armor is usually going to be some form of hammer.

All I’m gonna say, is there’s a reason polearms were so popular back when wars were fought in melee combat…and it’s not just because they were cheaper

Chopping wood with a dedicated war axe isn't a massive improvement. Their blades are very thin and light. Unlike a traditional hatchet say.

I wouldn't say "lifetime of training." About a week is enough to get proficient with it as a military sidearm. And Napoleonic campaigners did set up their camps with their sabers. Lower end for camp work, upper end for war work.

Your can hook limbs and choke up on the axe and use it like brass buckles in grappling

Axes are also a great tool and are probably more concealable

I like to imagine axes as throwing weapon for heavy infantry before the clash, they're less cumbersome to throw than pilum/javelin when you're fully weighted down by the armor.

Axe can also be a good whacking stick, with the axehead being a good weight to allow for big ouch without turning everything red.

The answer is the spaxe, the beautiful chimaera created when instead of quiilions or a guard you use two axe heads

The only thing you can't do with an axe that you can do with a sword is poke... they are equally as useful considering you can disarm or even snap a blade with an axe

Axes may be better at damaging armor but there is a technique called half swording to get the same effect

That an axes have practical use outside of combat. Hence why raiders preferred them.

Forward weight isn’t a detriment to the axe if that’s what you were trying to get at…

I feel like swords are the Jack of all trade kinda weapon it can be used as a axe or a mace or a spear if you hold it right, it will always be worse then those at those tasks but it can do it and worn easily

One may not be inherently better than the other. However I can tell you which one I’d rather have in a duel.

Axes are easy to learn, small point of impact with a lot of energy being displaced. Not to mention extremely maneuverable in close quarters if you know what you’re doing. At the end of the day it’s all about your fighting style

Honestly, I feel like I found a nice, easy way to wear a smaller axe provided that the ax is the size of your forearm, like a tomahawk, or a hatchet shove it into your belt or into your pants or even your shorts whatever you’re wearing ideally, it’s a little stretchy like sweats don’t have the blade facing forward, rather have the blade facing behind you against your buttocks and you can draw easily if you hook your finger underneath the blade and draw it like a gun and while you’re in the middle of the motion you can just wrap your fingers around the handle. It takes a little practice, but so does quick drawing anything.

Here the thing, you can get a good axe much cheaper than you can get a good sword.

Use the axe to pull down their shield and use the pointy end of the sword to poke the enemy.

Swords have a bigger learning curve which is why a lot of people in history used axes as they're a lot easier to wield, they have no real thrusting capabilities though whereas a sword and shield tend to trump an axe generally speaking.

Ok as far as arming someone against a threat an axe is going to be the better option as you dont have to think about edge alignment when swinging it at someone or something its intuitive, where as a sword is a bit more advanced sure it has better range but range is wasted on someone if they dont know how to use the ittem

Honestly axes are so cool looking. There’s no other reason why I like axes more than swords.

I would go with axe. Since axe practically served as multi tool. Cheap and simple. It heavy weight in front mainly to chop tree, armor or can be acting as a hammer if needed or throwing. Also it more compact in narrow area combat.

If you have a cutting wood axe, then you have a very top heavy tool not good for throwing and not good for moving quickly in a fight.

Axes also have more tool versatility depending on the environment you're in

Imagine vikings just throw axes when the battle starts and just use their hidden axe once they broke their spear that'll pretty hilarious

Just depends on what you are fighting and personal preference. Both are good for their own purposes, but the sword is more versatile.

Chop wood for 5 minutes and you can probably write in perfect cursive if you tape a pen to the axe, Axes are nowhere near sluggish unless your biceps are the size of slugs. I’m a skinny dude but I have no problem terrorizing trees for fire wood.

If I was in a fight with no armor, I would grab a sword for some defence. If I was wearing some armor however I would use the axe for a more aggressive attack

For my fellow D&D nerds: this is why the greatsword deals 2d6 damage due to better manueverability and consistency. Whereas the Greataxe deals 1d12 due to greater chance of landing both high damage blows and glancing hits.

I'd say axes are more versatile since they can chop down trees along with being usable as a weapon, however I prefer swords because it relies less on powerful strikes and more on parrying and thrusting

I'd go with axe little to no training needed. Simple yet powerful maneuvers. And alot more added utility. Not to mention an axe head is more durable than a sword blade. Swords tend to break twords the middle of the blade. axes break at the middle of the wooden shaft but wood isn't hard to find and even then you'd still have an axe head to use to make another shaft or improvised spear till you get another weapon

If it was a zombie apocalypse would pick axe. It wouldnbe more effective against zombies with helmet or other forms of body armor and it also doubles as a tool for camp building and wood crafts😊

Whilst axes are more accessible, swords are easier to use both for the purpose of violence and for ergonomics. Since axes whilst there are ones specialised for combat are original designed to chop wood, like every thing heavy and sharp an axe works to Hurt things a sword is just better given it having all the weight near your hand rather then at the head of the weapon and the fact swords have a lot more cutting edge

Easier and cheaper to train peasants with axes and spears with shields as both weapons require less iron or steel and are mostly wood

Axe is good for a single target. Swords are good for multiple enemies, especially if you enchant it with a sweeping edge.

Would it make sense for someone to carry multiple weapons during the time periods that these weapons were prevalent? For instance a knight preferring to use a long sword carried on his back, but also carrying a short sword or dagger for a rapid equip, and in use with shields, and then ontop of that an axe to be used in the offhand if more effective than a two handed grip and for dealing with armoured opponents easier? Or is this just a big pipe dream? Edit:typo

Rarely if ever did *anyone* in general had swords on their backs while sheathed. Exceptions being cosplay stuff of course

an axe is great for more offensive fighting, while a sword is better for defensive fighting, so if you are a really really aggressive fighter, use an axe and shield, if you dont like taking the first swing, use a sword

Also swords are almost always longer than axes so they have a much more effective reach than an axe. There are exceptions (especially because the line between long knife/dagger and sword can blur sometimes), but generally speaking an axe you can wear is gonna be much shorter. So, axe users better get good at avoiding hand-sniping from the fasterz longer swords. Or get a shield.
