AXE FX vs REAL Mesa Boogie Lonestar - Can YOU Hear the Difference?

Музыка

For my Presets visit: johnnathancordy.gumroad.com/ I find these kind of things kind of fun to set up and a good way to see how close or not the Axe FX/FM9 can get to the real thing, especially when the real thing weighs 37kg...
The Mesa Lonestar is loaded down with a Fractal X Load, and then is in a loop of the Fractal FM9 (at the time of making this video, the amp blocks of each device are at parity, so this experiment should sound identical whether using Fm3, Axe FX3 or FM9), with the same Cab/Reverb for both Device A and B. Let me know if you can tell which is which?
www.buymeacoffee.com/johnnath... - you can grab my presets here if you want for FM3 and Axe FX 3.

Both sound great! While there might be a subtle difference (I listened to on good monitors), it shows how both are wonderful in their own way. Neither one can totally replace the other, but for workflow and consistency it shows how wonderful Axe FX is! I just picked up the FM3 and can’t wait to deeper dive with it. This gives me hope as I look to play with warm, realistic tones and this nails it.

When you played the loop at around 9:30 they sounded near identical.

The differences were small, often indiscernible. In the last few examples, I finally started hearing a pattern. Device B sounded a little more even and thicker in the mids and lower frequencies. The highs in Device A sounded a little clearer. These are the difference I generally notice between Modelers and Real Amps, if I can hear anything. So, I'm guessing that Device B was the real Amp. What came to mind after listening to all the examples: Device A is like sitting on a nice chair, and Device B is like sitting on a nice couch. Somehow, Device B is a little more comfortable. 🤷 "Match EQ" would probably reveal the differences.

I used to be obsessed with these kind of comparison videos in the past. Now, if i’m listening to the comparison (soloed, not in a mix) on my iPhone speakers in a fairly silent room and I have a hard time telling the difference…. This is totally GOOD enough for recording and practicing/jamming with headphones. While i don’t think about these things, i can play more guitar, keep getting better and writting new cool stuff. For live jams/gigs, I agree that a real tube amp/cab setup is whole other experience, since the sound projection is pretty much the only factor that we can’t reproduce. Still, thanks for this comparison John!

Did your speaker impedance curve in the FM9 match the x-load? If not, this could account for some difference in sound and touch response. Either way excellent, inspiring playing… subscribed.

So hard to tell to be fair.. I suppose it’s the feel of the amp volume and what the FM3 is going through.. Slightly more snap on the amp to my ears but both sound great 👌👌👌

Out here in youtubeland, it’s hard to hear any differences. After listening for a while, I think Device A sounds slightly brighter than Device B. When you added overdrive, the Fractal sounded a little brighter or clearer than the Lonestar, so I’m guessing Device B is the amp. Can you do the “opposite” experiment, run the Fractal thru the cab and speakers of the Lonestar? Nice sweatshirt, Christmas present?

A sounded better to me. Keep in mind though, B might sound relatively better in person since I am assuming it is being mic'd. Both sound perfectly fine.

B is the amp, its got a warmth and fatness to it that the fractal lacks. The fractals also got that exaggerated compressed pick attack thing going on that doesn't happen with real amps, unmistakable once you clock it. Very close though

Close enough for it not to matter imo, got myself on the FM9 waitlist now! The only things that put me off moving to modelling are; option paralysis and also just being able to jam and create sounds on the fly like I can with my amp and a bunch of pedals, don't like the thought of menu diving just to get to the sound in my head

The only thing that gave up the amp (device B) is that I could hear a bit more hum with clean sound.

  • @MarkLumsley

There seems to be more 'punch' in the attack of Device A's sound. It's not as frequent and as obvious in Device B. I'm not sure which is which, but A seems more realistic based on what I've said.

I can't for the life of me get the Lonestar models in the Axe FX to sound right. It's sooooo muddy and waaay too much low end, even when I turn the bass all the way down, like to the point where it makes my speakers crackle, and they can usually handle low end well, any thoughts?

  • @jimmywilliams3972
    @jimmywilliams39722 жыл бұрын

I n a KZread video there is a compressed nature that fools your ears in a comparison like this. the other thing that will affect the sound is the speaker. The Lonestar speakers will sound much different. when you take the Lonestar speakers out of the equation you change the amp. The Axe Fx is so close that other cabs or IR's will make the amp and the model so close most won't be able to tell the difference. I could not tell with the KZread sound maybe if I was in the room but not from the video. Most of what most people here is perceived in their minds. most people will say the real amp is better because modeling sondes "digital". Digital is a buzz word that people us to impress other people. This video is very well made, and he is trying to avoid "buzz" words and us more descriptive terms to help other people perceive what he is hearing in the room.

I'm assuming B is the amp because it has that white noise... So I guess I cheated. I could totally hear how they reacted differently based on how hard you played after you mentioned it. There is a bloom and compression that changes the attack of the amp. That is the main difference I notice between my stomp and my amps through the fractal load box (which is awesome btw). That might be what most people quantify as "feel", how the tone changes as you dig in or lighten up. Has nothing to do with feeling anything, unless you are sitting on your monitors....

Device B definitely has some warmer mid character but it is barely noticeable. With some tweaks, Device A (what i suppose is Axe FX) could sound exactly like that, which few realize is true.

B has a thunk to the attack not present in A. Also, B feels far more alive and dynamic but that may have just been the playing.
