Amazon Aurora with PostgreSQL Compatibility is a relational database service that combines the speed and availability of high-end commercial databases with the simplicity and cost-effectiveness of open-source databases. We review the functionality in order to understand the architectural differences that contribute to improved scalability, availability, and durability. We also dive deep into the capabilities of the service and review the latest available features. Finally, we walk through the techniques that can be used to migrate to Amazon Aurora.

Unfortunately this Postgres once was Postgres and now is an Amazon product, forked one way, away from Postgres.

That's incorrect Jan, it's not 'forked away', as you said. Aurora PostgreSQL will continue to track new versions of community PostgreSQL as they become available. The primary difference is in the high availability / durability storage layer, as the Deep Dive video details.

It is fairly true as AWS will most probably not “just” take the next version of pg and apply their changes, rather the other way around. Moreover, the do not contribute back, which is IMHO quite essential to remain part of the community.

@@jankarremans3798, again, your assumptions are not correct. Also, there have been some significant changes to correct constraint enforcement that we have offered back to the community to improve SQL standards compliance, but the community has thus far declined to accept them, for their own reasons. We have a new improvement that we intend to offer to the community soon, so stay tuned for that, and I'll see you in Ottawa.

It will be great if AWS works closer to the PG community. It will certainly be a big win for both of them.
