"AWFUL! That Looks Like a SOGGY Toilet Roll!" | Dragons' Den IRL

Kevin Rickard and his son Tony entered the Den seeking a €90,000 investment and in return the Dragon will own 10% equity in 'TheWaterGaurdian' - a device that will drip life into any plants you wish whilst traveling the world, but all of the Dragons had issues with the appearance of the product!
An international sensation, Dragon's Den features entrepreneurs pitching for investment in the Den from our Dragons, five venture capitalists willing to invest their own money in exchange for equity.

I don't understand the complaints about the appearance of the product. This is not a permanent addition to the plant; it is for feeding them over time. The function is more important here.

The problem is that most people have plants for aesthetic reasons, so if the plant needs a ugly device to water it, then what’s the point in having the plant at all? I actually think they should have marketed it as a product people use to water their plants whilst they are on holidays (so it’s not basically a permanent fixture). I can see a lot of people buying it for that purpose.

@@tonydarcy7475 It has been a little while since I saw the video, I think that my understanding was that it was being marketed for its holiday purpose. That is what I meant when I said it is not a permanent addition to the plant. It struck me as a strange and exaggerate metaphor, although this is very likely because it was on TV.

Down in the morgue, we have arranged the dead bodies to look like Dragons Den. They stare glassy-eyed at the viewer as they slowly decompose, ensuring the show is considerably less exciting than watching paint dry. We call this Irish Dragons' Den...

Is that lady dragon for real or is that just what all of the Irish think, the idea that people will not pay based on future achievements? Has she never hear of futures trading for a start?

  • @NellSmith

Don't mistake caution for ignorance. Not all businesspeople are keen on high-risk propositions - such as the futures trading which you bring up. It was precisely that kind of risky trading by *ONE* individual, Nick Leeson, which actually *_bankrupted_* Barings' Bank due to the failure and knock-on effect of (originally) *ONE* very risky and very large investment which didn't pan out - and Barings' was, at that time, one of Britain's oldest, most successful, and best-respected merchant banks (look it up if you have to). Another point worth remembering (and almost certainly the point behind what Sarah said - i.e. that there would be "nobody *_today_* willing to risk that much money on an unproven concept" - or similar words) is that the Irish economy went through a *HUGE* (and, as so often, probably insecurely founded) 'bubble' or boom period from around the mid-1990s to the mid-2000s, during which many risky investments did indeed pay off handsomely, but which was then followed, as usually happens, by an economic crash in which many investors then *_lost_* a lot of money - even though the 'bubble' period lasted for such an unusually long time. Any businessperson who remembers that economic boom - informally referred to as 'The Celtic Tiger' - and the bust which followed (and all of the investors on this programme will recall it well!) is unlikely to risk as much as 90,000 Euros on a product with no sales to date. However, I do often wonder why the investors (on this and other _Dragons' Den_ and/or _Shark Tank_ programmes) don't simply ask for a bigger percentage for the same price, thereby reducing what they see as an over-inflated valuation. I'm aware that the investors generally don't like to see (in their view) over-valued businesses, but when the product is good/unique and has potential (and is even patented, as this one is, which inhibits cloning), I'm surprised that they don't take into account the lack of experience of most of the hopeful entrepreneurs and simply ask for a bigger equity stake than what is offered, while explaining that this is because they consider the business to be over-valued. Then again, maybe these 'angel'-type investors see over-valuations as some kind of insult or even an attempt to 'con' them out of money? It often does seem a common view amongst them, now that I've watched many dozens of these _Den_ style programmes (UK, Irish, and Aussie - but not USA _Shark Tank,_ which isn't really my style). And it's their money, so they can invest it - or not - where they please, of course... :)

@@NellSmith I agree with you, there are many business people who are not at all keen on high risk propositions,. I guess I wasn't clear so I've gone back through the recording to get her exact statement which is around the 7.00 mark. She says - "There isn't anybody in this country today that will pay anybody in advance of achieving results." I didn't mean to be rude about the Irish either but she was the one that said 'in this country'. Anyway, she claims that there is nobody would do this. It really is a completely untrue statement. There are instances where I have to pay someone before work is done or goods are given to me, that is, I am paying in advance of results being achieved. To claim that no Irish person dabbles in the futures market is ludicrous or is that really true, as she claims? But really? They have supposedly high profile business people as their Dragons and then there is idiotic statements like that made.
