How bad is a lowered VW T5 suspension?
My van is lowered 40mm on sports springs. There is a way to make the ride more comfortable.

Koni Special Active is recommended on forums what I've seen... also considering them for my T6... I think it's safe choice.... or ST-X full suspensions, which are height adjustable... I'm little worried that the height won't be satisfying with Koni and I will be elaborating with correct sets of lowered springs, which is a lot of hussle

I have refitted my original standard springs now and the ride it amazing (in my opinion). It is floaty but now controlled. The lowering springs are usual too stiff and ruin the ride. These shocks certainly are a huge upgrade to the standard ones, although the lower you go the less improvement you are likely to get.

Another great Video John. Love that you are going to try to share the before and after 'Experience'. The subjective stuff like ride quality is so hard to empiricaly share, and yet you will know if its better as soon as you hit the first rough patch. Nice Scarborough ending. I test drove a few T5's before I bought Betsy the T4. They were all lowered and I thought they were all very 'Crashy' over rough roads. But ive never driven one on standard suspension. So Im assuming like yours, that most Lowered T5's suffer in the same way. It will be fascinating to see if you can get a good difference. Ruby the A class has a very smooth ride but with a Very Crashy soundtrack🤣. More rattle elimination still to do👍👍

I have not filmed the after yet. Hopefully it will show up as a big difference, especially over speed humps. It has completely transformed the ride. It doesn't quite float, but I can almost describe it as comfortable now. The standard suspension was pretty good. I can remember cringing when I was about to hit my first pothole and then not a lot happened. I get frustrated with people when they say a good ride is when the vehicle rides flat and does not understeer. That is good road holding at best. A good ride should be predictable and comfortable for a road vehicle (I always say that it should not be designed to go around the Nürburgring)

sounds like you need adjustable shock absorbers you can then fine tune adjust the ride comfort. I had them on my Porsche but I wouldn't know if they were available for a T4 or not

Hi John. They are available but are out of the budget I had set. I have the Koni Special Active shocks fitted now and the improvement is huge.

Hello where did you get your springs fitted for 200 quid

Hi Ben. Look at Vanstyle.co.uk. They are currently £230 with free fitting (if you are prepared to wait for a free date). I waited about 3 months.

To get this right you’ve got to spend the money. When you swap the springs and retain the original dampers you end up with mis-matched rebound and compression resulting in a crashy ride. If you want better handling with OEM suspension the best solution is the H&R anti-roll bars.

Hi Kenny. Better handling is not really important to me. A nicely filled wheel arch and a soft ride would be the ultimate. But as you say it's just not really achievable. I have upgraded the shocks to Koni special active and they have made a huge improvement, but as you suggest the best answer is to pay more money.
