    Very Amazing Historic Elevette Home elevator! And I like the way a Table is featured on this elevator.

  • @historiclift27
    @historiclift273 жыл бұрын

    That table and the design of the buttons being controllable outside would have allowed this to double as a dumbwaiter. Its highly likely that in the era this was installed a house this grand would have at least planned for servants. Probably had them too if the family at the time continued living here after the start of the great depression. I would imagine food trays could have been sent up or down with no passengers on board.

    Yup, it had servants. The owners that installed it lived here from 1913 to 1963. There are newspaper ads looking for a maid and a cook. The house is designed to where you can shut off 1/3 of it and keep the servants in the back of the house, using the elevator.

    looks like you have to send it up to use the back door or basement stairs from the inside I have seen this type of house with back stairs and back door - basement configuration you can see the back door on the right at 5:44 so the retrofit was simple the top landing or winder steps are removed I bet the stairs are in tact and just lead up to the side of the car it would be cool to put a walkable floor on the cartop then the stairs could still work when the car is down the top door has a interlock the bottom don't need one as you can go down to the basement when the car is up

    This company built lots of these, I don't know what became of them....perhaps merged with another company. Some had the drive mounted in the top of the shaft with dual chain drive from a dual shaft gear reducer. Most had heavy duty limit switches to act as stop buttons at both landings, as well as a stop button in the car. Pressing the up or down button for a couple of seconds to move the car off the limit switch, would latch the contactor until it hit the next limit switch, which stopped the car at the landing. This was a standard forword / reverse contactor set up. Later models had interlock switches on the gate and landing doors. They were well built and I am not surprised so many still run or would run with slight repairs. Many of these do not meet todays safety requirements, so don't expect many elevator service companies to certify or repair these. If you plan to use one, you should have the machine checked by someone who works with process machinery, to at least verify that is works as it was intended in the 20's and 30''s. The gear reducers and other parts many not have been lubricated in half a century or more. If they were not used much, and have little wear, it is likely with a little love, they will function as designed. Caution should be used if door interlocks are not present. These antiques are cool, but use a your own risk. The shelf is for a food tray, used to send food up stairs to the infirm person that this machine was probably installed for.

    Whether or not there were disabled people in my house, I would have installed an elevator in my house. I believe that elevators are essential to even houses. I'd like to be an architect when I grow up, and any houses I design, they will include elevators. As a young architect, I am commited to ADA accessibility. What if someone breaks a bone? For example, my kindergarten teacher once broke her ankle AT SCHOOL, and so we had a long term substitute teacher for two whole months. At home she was unable to use the stairs to get up to her bedroom, and so she had to sleep on the couch. This is why all homes should have elevators.

    @@Pidalin Each serves its own purpose. Actually phillips are designed with the intention of the screwdriver popping out of the screwhead... when torqued enough. That's for factory workers, so it makes it difficult to overtighten them. Torx likewise is great for assembly, as they are accurate and grip right all the time, but often a nightmare for repairmen. Especially on cars where they can get rusty. Then, phillips aren't any better for that situation.

    @@madmanmapper Philips must be pushed hardly to not jump out from driver and today you can set torque on your electric driver so star or hexagon are much better for factory. When you have good bit (we have from wurth) it holds very well and it's centred, but it depends on exact version of bit and torx screws, some of them are more simple and it's not centred well. I think all screws have problem with taking it out when it's damaged. I bought hexagon keys in inch sizes so when I have damaged little screw 1.5 mm, I can use inch key 1/16" (cca 1.59 mm), it works perfectly. I guess it works even vice versa for Americans. Or sometimes I just use flat driver and hammer, it's not elegant solution, but when screw is from softer material (ordinary steel), it works. I think classic hexagons are the worst when it's small size, you destroy it easily, for small sizes, it's probably better to use classic philips. Problem with philips is that when you don't push enouth and bit is jumping on screw, you destroy that screw very fastly.

    1929 is the patient date on the elevator itself. Doing historic research on the house shows that the young wife of the house became disabled in 1930, they also had an elderly aunt living with them. Both were dead by 1935, so it didn’t make sense that they would bother installing this until after they were gone (the man of the house reads as being an extremely spry individual, known for being lanky and jolly, marching in the town parade every year as Uncle Sam, he lived another 30 years past his wife). It is all, of course, a guess. This would have been one of the highest forms of technology of the era, so it wouldn’t surprise me if they had access to some of the newest materials available of the decade, perhaps even before they were formally on the market.

    so if you buy a house owned by a slave master it's cheap? how did this young guy buy a mansion? I can barely afford an apartment and I'm a Nero surgeon. also I'm pretty sure that elevator was so the servant could move around the house unseen.

    Homeowner here. :) This home was $395k, the same price as a basic new built home in our area. I’d say the Lord definitely blessed us-we lived in an old Sunday school room in a church for 13 years serving as youth/children’s pastors, making $35k a year between the both of us working full time. Cockroaches and a homeless soup kitchen downstairs. One day we accidentally drove by this house and jaw-dropped, even got out of the car; this was when it wasn’t for sale. We love history. Zillow said over half a million. We said “we’d never be able to afford a place like that…” and kept driving. Two years later it went for sale, and over 6 months it kept dropping in price, and we jumped on it when it came into an affordable price range. I think the Lord blesses his servants in various ways: maybe with family, friends, homes, peace, contentment. :) So my tip, serve God, and he will give you the things your heart needs, above and beyond full. The Bible says a full jar of blessings, “Pressed down and shaken.”

    A death trap for elevator repair persons. Generally there is zero pit clearance or refuge. Also children have been killed who have hidden in the open space between the car and the wall when the gate is open! An elevator man's nightmare!
